what is the jets salary cap situation? Last night i was listening to Michael Kay and he says were 3 mm over, john clayton say were 12mm over, the site says were over 16 mm over,i have a friend of mine who has a knack for these types of things and he say were just under(he's been doing it for years now and he's usually right). the last couple of days i've heard and seen about 5 different amounts and scenarios. i wanna know as much as everyone else, but just let tanny handle this shit, it his job not ours.
Also, Elam is an RFA this year, so they will have the option of not bringing him back with no penalty.
we are 16.5 million over. Kay is a fool who should stick to baseball. The cap could possibly go up by another 1-3 million. The final number will be released within 2 weeks according to Tannenbaum but most people think 123 is the correct number. http://www.nyjetscap.com/salary.html
Holy crap, I can't believe how many people misinterpreted this; or maybe I just worded it terribly. What I mean by hypothetically is, forget about the Cap and replacing players for a moment, and try to find the players that would be cut given Ryan's criteria based on attitude/aggressiveness/intensity etc. So far, Bryan Thomas is the one I hands down agree with who plays too passively.
i was just on that site, and they're is a cautionary note saying... "Calculating the salary cap in the NFL is near impossible, especially if you are a fan of a tight lipped franchise like the New York Jets. The Jets are ridiculously quiet about their contracts, leaking out bits and pieces of information here and there regarding their players. While we will make every attempt to be accurate in our reporting of the salary cap numbers released by the Jets, please remember that this is an inexact science and that there will be mistakes along the way. " I really don't know what to think anymore, my buddy also says that even if favre comes back were under. That sounded really far fetched, and i doubt that true. i guess we wait till tanny tells us whats what.
This is about the best way to sum up the VG situation right now. If Mangini was such shit as some say, this could be the break The Ghost needs to shed that image. Lets hope Rex can light a fire under his arse and use him to his fullest potential.
if we are speaking hypothetically, i would imagine..... Thomas, Coles, Baker... All these herbs that are either lazy, or cry babies (coles and baker nearly turned into a Kendall situation) Truth be told.... i'd cut these clowns anyway whether their Ryans kind of guys or not
Thank you for someone finally responding to the actual question as it's posed lol. Coles - difficult to find fault with his tenacity, though I think he's waring down and tends to whine. But he gives it his all, and as far as being outspoken goes, I'm not sure Ryan is against that.
His new coach doesn't dispute it. So? The whole idea of the thread according to the OP was NOT to take into account the cap or whether or not people can be let go. Only who doesn't fit because of attitude. This is what Pettine said earlier about him today and I will take their word for it over some college coach trying to pump him up. "On first-round disappointment Vernon Gholston: ``Obviously, we all know what he did at the combine but being in shorts is one thing and actually how it carries over to the field is another. We liked him (in the draft) for sure, but some of the issues that he came in with ... there was a lack of consistency in some of his play. He would flash brilliance for two or three plays, then disappear. ``That's one thing we had in our notes. If he ended up a Raven, he'd have to work on being more consistent. For a physical standpoint, he's got all the tools. I'm looking forward to meeting Vernon and seeing what makes him tick. If the guy's got it in him, we're gonnat get it out of him.''
Sure it did. Last year he took the whole season off!!! I think players like Jenkins, Harris, Rhoads,Revis,Pace, Woody, are Ryan type players. I also think that winning is a mindset. I think a guy like Ryan will have his players believing in his ability(more the defenseive players)as a great defensive guru, which in turn will bring out the best in them. I think, just the fact of his reputation, will have guys playing like hell, for him.In a way, he is like a Parcells. Just hiring him makes us better, because of his reputation.
I don't think it's as much misinterpreting it as not being able to quantify 'intensity and ferocity' with the control group that we have as fans. If you were going to go that route after 2008, I'd be cutting half the players on the roster. But we don't know how much of that was a reflection of coaching and what of it was pure player qualities.
That's a fair point. However, I'd think they would give him some leeway since he was a rookie still adjusting, because maybe they can bring out his intensity; whereas, other players - like the Cactus - who've been in the NFL for a while shouldn't have that problem, and Ryan therefore, won't excuse it.
That's true, and I figured it'd be hard to gauge that. But someone like BT, who's been here with Herm and Mangini, just doesn't look fast, or at full-speed all the time, or aggressive, or downright mean when he plays.
Can't really argue against cutting Thomas. The guy just looks like a slug out there considering he's supposed to be a SPEED RUSHING SPECIALIST. Ugh.
BT hasn't done shit since 2006, but could he be a player that Ryan and Co. could get a lot more out of, say by actually coaching the guy?
If I were Rex, these players would be cut: Mike Devito.- Whack at his position, get someone else in there for the same money or less with better technique and physique, that can actually seal the edge. Bryan Thomas- bust. David Barrett- overpaid. nothing to show for it. Pouha- toss up between him and mosley Jehuu Caulcrick- We have Jones, Washington, Marcus Mason. Noah Herron. No need for Jehuu. Danny Woodhead- Possibly the only waterboy actually wearing a jersey. David Bowens- 31 years old, like Barton, but unlike Barton, can't play sideline to sideline. He's getting 2nd string money for starting special teams. If your tired of the Jets being treated as JV squad to the NY Giants, then the front office needs to stop signing these players with no talent, and no promise, and who clearly show a lack of desire to win. I am calling it now, that in 2009 Rex Ryan will have Vernon Gholston starting. and he will be productive ala Terrell Suggs. Only reason why his transition will be quicker, is because he doesnt have time on his side. He's getting a 50 million dollar contract, and he has 4 years remaining. He has two years tops, to show that he was worth the investment. Terrell Suggs also had Ray Lewis, Trevor Pryce, Bart Scott, Adalius Thomas, Chris McAlister, and Ed Reed. We have Kris Jenkins. Rhodes. Revis. On another note, regarding the cut decisions: In January we signed: DT Brian Schaefering 6'4" 295lbs. - (You are able to cut Pouha, Mosley. I prefer Pouha.) RB Marcus Mason & Noah Herron- (That makes the stable 4 productive runningbacks. We should use the runningback by committee approach, Thomas Jones gets the damage, Washington breaks the edge, Marcus Mason can take punishment, and Noah Herron can catch passes out of the backfield. It's Schottenheimer's dream backfield, if you base it solely on the intangibles) In reality the there is only three positions I see Ryan looking at taking with the 1st pick: Defensive End. Linebacker. Defensive Back (Safety or Corner) He will not draft an offensive position with the pick. His cornerstone of the franchise is its defense. People tend to forget that Chris Baker was underutilized last season. Make him start at TE, and use Keller as a slot, and you have a virtual "spread offense", in an under center formation. Our receivers can stretch the field if the play calling is there. Last season it wasn't. The entire offense was marginalized by conservative, at times pussy, play calling, Rex Ryan is the anti-thesis of Eric Mangini, and the reincarnation of Vince Lombardi. Cue the music.
Ok first I would like to tear apart some of your cuts. You want to cut Pouha Mosely and Devito? thats our entire DL depth! for gods sake. You do realize DEVITO started over Kenyon Coleman one of the last weeks of the season right? Mosely and Pouha have done great in spot duty, Yes Pouha is probably the weakest DL we have right now, but he is the only one on the roster with the size to be able to rotate out with Jenkins. Yes without Jenks in the middle things are not as good, but they would be much worse if they didnt have somebody of Pouha's size in the middle. Mosely had the 3rd most sacks on the DL behind Ellis and Jenkins. not exactly a bright idea to be tossing that away. Besides every time he gets a chance he produces, comes up with a big hurry, run stop, sack, strip something. Mosely has easily been our best backup DL we have had in a long time. You want to toss Jehuu Caulcrick aside, the guy who was on our practice squad all of this year learning Schottenheimer's system, the only heir apparent we have for Tony Richardson on the roster? the guy is being groomed to take over for t-rich, all reports out of college had him as a mauler, I remember tons of guys on this board clamoring to get him as a udfa after the draft, because he could develop into something. Danny Woodhead was having a very impressive TC before his knee got shredded during a KR. This guy is tiny, shifty and could very easily develop into one hell of a PR guy. He reminds me very much of a poor mans Darren Sproles. In case you havent noticed, Leon while a great KR man, is not one of the league's better PR guys. Danny woodhead could help in that department. Besides, he isnt making any money, yes he has a paycheck, but cutting him saves nothing! give him a chance to see what he has. Bowens in case you don't remember played fairly well in replacement of the injured David Harris. Hell I thought he was playing better than Harris after his return from injury. Bowens was tied for fourth on the team in sacks (Jenkins-4) Hello, no need to cut him, he is agressive and can play for Rex Ryan that I am sure of. Is he making 2 million dollars? yes, but he is quality depth, and not only a special teams leader, he is a captain of that unit. Certain roles that players play, actually deserve the 2 million he is getting paid. Bowens is a very integral part of this team. He can play any LB position, he can play DE in a pinch, he is a special Teams captain. you lose nothing by keeping the guy. Hell if you can get him to restructure great, but he is a guy i want to keep in Green. You state the obvious, that Gholston will be starting in 09. Well DUH his contract demands that this be the case. You say he will have suggs-like numbers, but his transition will be faster, what the hell does that mean? Suggs was under ryans command, 1 week before opening day of his rookie season. Ryan and pettine have an entire offseason to work with Gholston. I don't get the statement. on your "new hires" that we signed after the season, there is a reason these guys couldnt earn a roster spot in the NFL last year. sure the DT Schaefering has adequate size. But are you sure he can at least due Pouha's job? ready to make that jump without knowing? There is a reason Pouha was on an NFL roster last year, and Schafering wasnt. Marcus Mason and Noah Herron, you say they are Brian Schottenheimer's dream backfield. His dream is that he not only needs to find a way to get 4 rb's the ball on a semi-regular basis, but that he can't have a workhorse, or get Leon the Fan-mandated 10-15 touches a game because of two scrubs? If that is his dream, well then Brian doesn't really want to be coaching in the NFL much longer does he? Besides you already have a third RB on the roster in Jesse Chatman. He hit IR early in the year as well, so according to your final roster next year with these backfield changes, we have 5 halfbacks on the gameday roster and one fullback. 6 roster spots taken up? Jones, Washington, Chatman, Mason, Herron, Richardson. People on here freaked about 4 QB's, they would commit murder over 6 backfield positions being taken up on gameday. on a side note, I'll give you David Barret, he makes too much money to be a lousy Dime corner. and on Bryan Thomas, ask any one here i think he is garbage, and trash, and should never have been drafted. I have wanted him gone since day one, well by cutting him it costs us over 3 million dollars. Meaning we will likely have to put up with his shitty play for another year, because our cap is strapped as it is, and we just cannot afford to cost ourselves more money this year.
How can you tell who has been passive when the players have been playing a passive defense??? I can tell you I do think it's time for Thomas and Ellis to go and bring in some players that can actually rush the passer and earn big money.
