At this point it's clear what Ryan's and Pettine's attitude and style is. They want aggressive players, who play at full speed and play with intensity and ferocity.

So, knowing this, do you think they will get rid of players who don't fit this mold? We saw Mangini go after "character guys" and players who fit his scheme.

The Pettine article says what we need to know about the actual football skills they seek. However, if they want to create an attitude/style adjustment, what players do you think would or could be cut because they lack the it factor both coaches want? In other words, who's too passive to play for Ryan's and Pettine's D?

And I guess I should also ask, do you think they would actually do this: cut players because they don't play to their aggressive style?

Haha, he's definitely one I had in mind too. Would we take a cap hit if we cut him seeing as he got that new deal recently?

No matter what system we implement, Eric Smith should be gone.

Cutting players is rarely an option. Before making any decisions look at the cap ramifications.

for example, cutting Gholston would cause an immediate 16 million hit against this year and you would actually have to give him the money too.

I think Elam could stay as depth; he plays at full speed (although, hes not that fast) and is aggressive, likes to hit, but needs to be coached up.

Barton is another guy that has the attitude Ryan wants, but I still think he should be let go if we can get Scott.

    Other passive guys?

Yeah, I was about to add this. I mean, I know the reality of cutting players, but that's why I say hypothetically -- who are the players don't fit this attitude?

Besides, Ryan wouldn't want to cut him anyway; right now, he's drooling over the chance for he and Pettine to coach him up. Don't you think the thought crossed their minds last April that he could be on their roster?

According to the site Don posted (thanks), we'd take a 3.2 mil hit and only save 550,000...not financially prudent, but it would send a message.

Gholston is at the top of the list. It isn't a secret that he took plays and games off in college. It appears nothing changed last year either.

Look, I don't want to turn this thread into another Gholston debate. He's on the team, he ain't going anywhere, and Ryan and Pettine are going to work with him.

I'm trying to figure out which players don't have the attitude Ryan and Pettine want.

I think it was his 1st year, people were fawning over him and I just didn't get it...

I kept seeing this guy looking lost all over the place, yet I went to message boards and everyone liked him...

Anyway... GET RID OF THIS GUY!!!!

We can agree Eric Smith sucks and should be gone. But he could be axed because he lacks football skills. What players would Ryan cut because they're too passive?

That's what I was answering. He OBVIOUSLY doesn't have the attitude they are looking for. Pettine even mentioned it earlier today. They knew that when he was coming out. Of course he isn't going anywhere.

His coach disputed this and said, these jerks watching TV have no clue to what VG's job was on that particular play......

This guy gets a clean slate. Besides the fact that it's pretty ridiculous to mention him in a thread about getting rid of players when it's impossible to do at this point...

He gets a clean slate, he gets challenged and he gets a role in this defense based on whatever he can do.....

If next year is like thi syear THEN you start to figure out how to get rid of him.

No..no..no. I just said he would be at the top of the list if this was only hypothetical. I haven't really looked that close at the others yet. It's tough because anybody cut has to be replaced and can they be replaced with anybody that will make the team better. Tough calls. Gholston was easy. It is why the NFL wants a rookie pay scale put in that mirrors what the NBA does.
