By beating a prevent? Shanahan expossed us on both sides of the ball, Mangini knew it panicked and the team sensed it and panicked as well.
Yeah, that was really the problem. By the Miami game nobody cared if they won or lost and were just thinking about packing up and going home. Yesterday they said Johnson saw that on the sidelines and that is what made him so furious.
I think Jenkins is a star who got hurt playing a passive scheme that required him to sit passively and take on multiple blockers, instead of attacking and punishing blockers. I think Revis is a star in the making. I think David Harris also can be a top player; he just happened to be hurt last year. There is talent here that needs to be coached up and encouraged to make plays, not have their heads filled with no-nos. Rhodes has talent too. But he has been drifting in the wrong direction. The word is people play hard for Ryan. His game day calls cannot be worse than what we saw from Mangini last year. The only real drawback to me is the QB situation.
.......But I'm confident as a fellow fan , which he appears to be , I feel confident that he will give the job 100% , can't ask for more than that. That and Buddy hissing in his ear
I think our lollygogging D players are rueing the day Ryan was hired. Some names in case U wonder Ellis Coleman Thomas Barton Our DBF other then Revis & Rhodes I really wonder if the country club players I mentioned can turn into tigers thiis upcoming season
So what do you say to the fact that every single head coach who has ever won the Super Bowl started with no experience, and eventually developed to the point where they were able to lead their team to the Super Bowl? No offense to you, but it sounds like you're afraid. Fear is a loser mentality. Also, yeah he inherited a great D... and he had a lot of time to screw that D up... but they staid great under Ryan. Does that not count for something? Ryan says he is going to be hands on, and there is no reason to believe he won't be. The worst case scenario with Ryan is that our defense becomes spectacular under him and our offense so-so. The problem we've had overall in 8 years has been coaching. The coaching has been above average at times, but it has never been great. Rex needs to prove he can be great, but he has a great attitude and at this point it is a start. Based on the people who we could've hired this year, I'd say we got the right guy.
I think we have a lot to be excited about on the defensive side of the ball. Love the quote "Hey, the Jets are coming, and we're going to give you everything we got. And I think that's going to be more than you can handle." Sounds like Rex and Pettine have that samer kind of relationship as Parcells and Belly-- fiery, aggressive HC who knows how to manage players and call a game, and the brainy up and coming DC devising schemes all week. Two questions marks, lets see how they deal with it: 1. the offense-- it's pretty clear Rex will have to rely on others, at least to start. I like the all-weather offense quote. Maybe it's best to keep Schotty at this point, see what he does under Rex. Who else is out there and better and available? 2. personnel-- However good the coaching staff is, they need good players. Newsome in Balt is an awesome evaluator. Will Rex and Tanny have the eye for the right guys? (We know Tanny gan get it done when it comes to managing the cap)
Good post. I think keeping our offense intact is key to keeping us competitive next year. I don't expect the defense to rise to the top in one season. I am sure it will be better, but I think we will need a couple of speedy players to take it to the next level. Personnel wise, I think we will be OK. I don't think we are losing anyone as far as scouting goes and those guys have done a decent job. We will see what Rex brings to the table.
Hey Winston, Nice OP. I tend to agree with what you said. The SOJ part of me has been there in me the last three HC hires. Ryan has not totally banished it, but I love his attitude. I haven't felt this good since they hired Parcells. Of course even Parcells did not completely overcome the SOJ thing. But I do think Ryan has a chance. He also sounds like he genuinely wanted to coach the Jets. That makes him, uh, special. Heh. But in his case it's a good thing. It probably doesn't hurt that he might have some of the players wondering if he's a bit of a nut, either.
I don't have near the problem a lot of you do with Mangini as a HC. Yes, this years team choked hard down the stretch with teams that it was absolutely ridiculous to choke on. Shit happens. Coaches prepare players, but they don't execute the plays. It's easy to dump a lot of the blame on the HC, much like the QB for the losses a team takes. Goes with the territory, but I still believe that Mangini will develop into a good coach down the stretch. But it won't be here with us, obviously. That being said, I watched the press conference with Ryan and I have a positive feeling on having this guy with us. Mangini was a step up from Herm, and Ryan and his more endowed resume is likely a step up from Mangini. But he's still a first time HC and we will have growing pains from that I am sure. It will likely prove humorous to watch our fellow Jets fans deal with that. I'm going to proceed with cautious optimism at this point. I don't see any reason to dislike the Ryan hiring, but he still needs to prove himself and put the money where his mouth is in terms of changing the aggressiveness of this team.
I am not "afraid" as you put it. Football is just a hobby for me and I am just making some observations about the glut of man love for the new coach. I have not seen him do anything yet except run the Ravens D. The Jets are not my life.
Hemi, I like a lot of your posts, and you are no doubt correct, if you mean do things on the field. But he is saying the right things, imo, about where this team should go. That's a vast improvement over the last three HC's. It gives me a sense he knows what needs to be done to improve this team. It is cause for cautious optimism.
Rex will be as good as the team that he and Tannebaum assembles. He can talk a good game but Pitt, NE, Baltimore, Indy, Sd and now add Miami are not going away. Talk is cheap and he has to assemble a team that can play with the big boys. We are not that team right now so he has his work cut out for him.
Yeah, isn't that the real question, what team is the Jets right now? The team with 7 Pro Bowlers, that was 8-3 after taking down NE and TENN? Or the one that played bad enough to lose it's last five, but for Ellis's play? I think while the collapse was due to a number of factors, Woody and the FO decided that Mangini was one of them, and I can't argue with that. Mangini and Sutton, and both are gone. There will be more assessments this off season regarding the players themselves, but as a team I think they can go pretty far with a few holes plugged. Putting Qb aside, as that's a whole discussion in itself, they would be imo in descending order of importance: CB. I think Ryan's style, Baltimore's style, of D, particularly blitzing, requires having confidence in leaving both CB's to play man coverage when needed. Revis is awesome, but an upgrade on the other side imo is the single most important move to make. We all hoped Lowery was the man for this, and I don't think he should be cut, but he doesn't look like a quality starter. WR. A deep threat is needed, whoever the Qb is, assuming Chad does not come back. Heh. Safety, shoring up the DL, maybe a blitzing LB, follow those two.
SD went away last year and Miami will have to run an honest offense this year. The Wildcat won't work two years in a row but the rest are still at the top. Of course we will have to wait and see how Baltimore does without Ryan and who knows how many players, as well as Indy without Dungy. There may not be as many good teams as we think.
I don't expect the Ravens D to fall too far, if at all, but I could see Flacco or Harbaugh hitting a sophomore slump.
Cautious optimism is where I am right now. Yes, like others, I am just wondering how the D is going to look. I really think he will improve it. Sutton was terrible.
Some optimism is called for with Sutton gone. Does that bring us up into the cautious optimism range? Heh. I agree, I think the answer is yes. Ftr, the Ryan signing has me putting SOJ aside for the time being. I just won't forget where I put it.
