I thought if it was me it would be from that list - my tune did change on him at the end of the season, especially after the Rose Bowl. I'm a Penn State fan.
The main reason I knew to watch out for him was because of bunch of my buddies from back home are huge Trojan fans and they wouldn't shut up about Damian Williams after he transferred there with Mitch Mustain. Damian Williams was supposed to be huge at Arkansas with Mustain...now both are at SC, so we'll see what kind of chemistry they have if Mitch wins the starting job.
I forget the team + coach name but I've heard a lot of speculation that Mustain will transfer again. The HC from Arkansas when he was there and playing well is now the HC somewhere else and the team has a big hole at QB. I wouldn't put weight into it because if it were true he likely would have transferred already. He just can't get a grasp of USC's offense - maybe with Sarkisian gone things will be different and perhaps easier but you never know.
I wouldn't put any weight into it because it's total bullshit. Houston Nutt was his coach while at Arkansas, and the reason Mustain left was because of disagreements with the coaching staff. Nutt is now the head coach of Ole Miss and they have Jevan Snead at QB who is a total beast.
This post was basically what my reply would have been. Ole Miss and Houston Nutt don't have a hole at QB -- Jevan Snead is the real deal.
I don't know about that. Maualuga was a stud today at Senior Bowl practice. He looked like an All America out there.
Guys, I can't provide a link, from a reliable source....."The Jet's seemed very interested and talked extensively with Larry English, DE, N. Ill" at the Senior Bowl today. English projects to be a OLB in a 3-4. Could be available to the Jets in Rd 2, some project him higher, but mid 2 is about where he should come off the board.
Thoughts from today: That CB from WF Alphonso Smith has great agility. He might not be the tallest guy but he can definitely play. I'd love to see him in the Jets defensive backfield. Herman 'the House' Johnson is only an interior lineman. He does not have the feet to play RT. But he would crush people at Guard. NT BJ Raji was on fire today. Mayock called him out for mediocre play on Tuesday and he responded strongly. He was unblockable for most of the day. Brian Robiskie was a good looking WR. A big guy who makes everything look easy. I'd be happy seeing him as a second day pick for the Jets.
That's why I said you shouldn't take a single practice, whether it's good or bad, into account. Rey Rey has consistent production throughout his college career. He's a flat out beast. When those "experts" said Maualuga was sliding down draft boards because he had an off-day, they completely lost all of their credibility with me.
English looked really good. Seemed to get to the QB no matter which OL was trying to block him. He looks like a guy who could produce a solid pass rush in the NFL. Mayock and gang sang his praises every time the camera was on English.
That's interesting. It looks like Rex Ryan might not be all that high on Vernon Gholston, but then again, you can never have too many pass rushers. Larry English has completely dominated in the MAC. I know he was league MVP in 2007.
Popeye.....I really like English, looked liked he belongs and has natural football instincts. His stock could and should rise, but right now Rd 2.
I agree...his small school pedigree push him further down on some team's draft boards, but English definitely has what it takes to be a successful 3-4 OLB.
Electric........Rex really talked postively about VG at the press conference today, and how he wants to "coach him up" this year. I've been one VG's harshed critics, even way before the Jet's drafted him, I'm willing to let Rex light a fire under his Arse and give him a pass in 2008. BTW, Off topic.....Rex loves Revis and Rhodes!!! Rex basically felt the Revis is one of the Best CB's in the NFL.
Oh I know what Ryan said about Gholston in the presser, that's why I made the comment about him not being high on him. He may not be as high on him as we think...I figured he might be blowing smoke. I hope we see some production out of VG in 2009. By looking at pass rushers though, it seems like Ryan and staff may be looking for more OLBs for the rotation.
Wake Forest CB Alphonso Smith has stood out at Senior Bowl practices. Smith, who NFL Network's Mike Mayock is raving about, has been "snaring interceptions and smothering receivers all week." Smith is only 5'9/190, but his ball skills help him make up for it. He had 21 career picks in college. Source: houstontexans.com
Juaquin Iglesias of Oklahoma has reportedly looked like the "most natural receiver" on the Senior Bowl practice field. Iglesias has reportedly separated at all levels and stood out during team drills. The 6'0/204-pounder will likely be a high second-round pick in April. Source: National Football Post
