It's not really a transcript, since I can't type THAT fast, but here's what I took down on my blog so far. http://www.jetsdaily.com/2009/01/coverage-of-rex-ryans-press-conference.html
Thanks for doing this. Seems like he's really going to change the environment of the entire organization. He's going to get the most out of all the players on defense.
As long as Tannenbaum/Rex can fix up the secondary I think Rex will make our defense nasty this year. Ellis, Jenkins and Mosley should all become better players in his system. Jenkins was great in the 3-4 but realistically he's going to break down every year in that system. I'm sure Rex the new dc and Jenkins will sit down and figure out the best way to utilize him. Ellis is pretty flexible, he can play the 3-4 2 gap end position, he can play the 3-4 1 gap so Rex will be able to take advantage of his talent. Having Revis makes his scheme that much easier to run. He will have full confidence that he can leave Revis one on one against pretty much any reciever in the NFL with a few exceptions. He's going to want to maximize Kerry Rhodes by letting him do what Reed and Polamula do where they basically watch the qb's eyes and play the ball. They key to that is pressure on the qb and the other safety has to be able to actually cover someone and tackle. Lowery has the instincs to become great in this defense. He won't have to cover for 3 seconds. They key is the other safety spot and getting some more decent corners. After that they need to upgrade the middle linebacker spot next to Harris. They need someone with the speed to cover, the size to oplay the run and also the ability to get after the qb. Those three things, Safety, CB and MLB are what is needed to make this defense nasty this year.
The secondary isn't that important if you have a tenacious front 7. It was important here because we would rush 2 or 3 most of the time.
You mean no more dropping back into coverage all game and giving the QB all day to throw??? OR when blitzing make it so obvious where the blitzes are coming from that they are easily picked up?? I love him already............I hope he pans out.
The secondary has to be able to tackle and cover. You can't blitz 5 or 6 when the secondary is awful. You have to be able to trust those guys or else you can't blitz. Mangini knew he had a horrible secondary and thats part of why the Jets didn't blitz that often. Smith, Elam, Law, Coleman, Barrett are all horrible in coverage. Elam made some big plays but he not be starting at secondary.
Thanks for posting this Mack. And while it may annoy some people when I do it, I just want to point out something significant: The moral, as always, is to not believe everything you read or hear from the media.
(Paraphrase) With all of the cameras back here, I thought we were going to meet the new President today. That's ok though, we're going to meet him in the next few years anyway. ---- I LOVE IT!!!!
Whether he lives up to all this talk remains to be seen..But he gets you alot more pumped up than any Mangini or Herm PC ever did. I love the line about being the most physical team in football. No more finesse"outsmart the opponent" bullshit. Line up, and hit them in the mouth till they keel over. That's how you change a franchise's culture.
but a secondary looks worse when a QB has 8 seconds to throw.... if he has less than 3 it doesn't matter how bad the secondary is...the Jets were 8-3 with that secondary but 2nd in the AFC in sacks at that point. They then played shit opponents down the stretch and stopped blitzing, thus going 1-4 and overall 9-7... its was horrendous coaching. When the Jets became vaginas again and stopped blitzing altogether, the secondary went from 22nd to 30th... you have to blitz to be successful.
You must love this PC more than anyone Mick. You've been crying for an aggressive "attack" mentality from this team for a long, long time. Talk is cheap..but if Ryan puts these words into actions..we will no longer see the finesse bullcrap that falls apart late in the 4th qtr.
I watched it on the NYJ site and had to stand up and walk around while listening to it because of the adrenaline flowing through me... this mentality is all I knew playing sports and this is the only mentality that should be allowed in the NFL. The mentality is now here. But the execution remains to be seen. I trust Ryan will do well.
