I just got off the phone with my father, he just said "Hey did the Jets sign that jerk*** (mods is this an okay word?) yet?" My father, a lifelong NYJ fan who's gone through more suffering than me, has understandibly been a skeptic. I myself have now just passed the 10 year mark as a fan (I'm 20 and I'm counting from when I really liked the team and understood the rules of football). My father did have a point, why is Ryan any different? He's another risk because we seem to have a thing for unproven defensive coaches. I, however, feel differently about Ryan. Here are the reasons why I am optimistic about him. 1. Firing Mangini was a good move and bad move. Bad because the FO had no replacement for him, they were just listening to the buzz about Cowher. We couldn't land Cowher and I think Ryan has the most upside out of all the coaches availble. 2. Let's examine our past failures.... Mangini was a bad DC in NE, admit it. In his one year as DC there they had what, the 26th ranked defense? I really don't care about losing players to injuries, theyre the freaking Patriots! Why did our FO look past this "minor" detail? I know he's a hard worker but I think that lead him to be arrogant. I'm sure he "studied" film till it wasn't possible to get anymore from it, but in the end his textbook ways couldn't make up for his lack real insight and experience. And for Herm, forget about it. Being a good motivator might be good for the defensive backs and assistant coach, but he didn't know how to coach anything other than the secondary. He was reaping the success of the Dungee camp. EDIT: Herm also had Parcells era players, which made him out to be better than he was. When Rex took over as DC of Ravens in 2006 the Ravens defense was ranked 1st, then 6th, then 2nd (per nfl.com), idk about you guys but that is a resume right there! Now I know this doesn't gurantee success, but numbers don't lie (I could only imagine seeing the Jets being a top 5 ranked defense, and not for only a few weeks either). He was also kept on as DC when Billick and the rest were fired, Harbaugh liked him. Ryan DOES have proven experience. He's been the DC for three years and has been with the Ravens as long as they've had that dominant D. He's seen a lot and has had a steady coaching career. He's not one of those assistant ball boys who becomes a NFL head coach in like 2 years. 3. We get to keep our 3-4. I like Spags, but really in my heart I knew this would've been a dumb move. We would've lost all we worked for in the past 3 years (unless Spags would've been willing to coach 3-4, but I doubt it). I really think we'd stuck be in a cycle of poor defense because of the constant switch from 4-3 to 3-4 and back. I think if our D is sorted out, we could give Ratliff a shot, our Joe Flacco if you will. 4. He's aggressive and has fire! I liked the mix of blitz packages last night and the constant blitzes caused Rothlisburger to have to make constant changes. It kinda reminded me of the 2006 Jets when they were moving all around the field making the offense squirm a little. The Jets have a pass rush, use it! I like the fact that he sees this team as talented, he knows we have the ingredients for a good D. I wanna see Kerry Rhodes scope the field like Ed Reed does, I wanna see Gholston get his head out of his ass and be used like Terrell Suggs. I also hope Ryan goes after players if they mess up, not write them up on their mistakes like some sort of RA like Mangini did. Thats why I think this guy is going to be great, but I'm skeptically optimistic. He still has games to win first. :breakdance:
Ryan is nothing but a great hire. Getting him makes me believe in Tannenbaum again as a top GM. Ryan is lots of things Mangini was not: energetic, communicates well with players, runs an aggressive defensive scheme that has been successful for several years. And I believe he will bring some of the best and brightest with him from Baltimore's staff. That includes the Ravens LB coach to be his DC (yeah, Sutton is gone ! ) and maybe the great QB coach for Flacco as OC if Schotty pouts and wants to leave. So I think these guys can get a lot out of the existing talent on the Jets roster. I'd love to see Rhodes become the new Ed Reed or Harris the new Ray Lewis (minus the stabbing, of course). I am really optimistic for next season with these guys. I think they will be a big improvement over what we had with Mangini & Co.
With Eric Mangini, the Jets wanted to become the New England Patriots. He was like mini-Belichick: silent, brooding, and boring. Unlike Belichick, though, he wasn't a terrific game planner, or a great in-game coach. Now, we're going to get a guy with his own identity. There aren't too many coaches like Rex Ryan, and he's going to carve out his place with the Jets. Unlike other coaches, he's earned his due, having coached for what, 20 years? He's aggressive, he's loud, and he seems to be a very fun coach. His players love him, and hopefully that means he'll bring with him some defectors from Baltimore.
Good post. I agree with most of it. Kerry Rhodes isnt Ed Reed. Reed is a HOF Safety and maybe the best ball hawking safety of all time. But that doesnt mean Rhodes isnt a very good player in his own right. I think the Jets have some good players on this defense (Rhodes, Revis, Pace, Jenkins, and Harris) but they need more players. I would love to see them bring in somebody like Bart Scott to play ILB alongside Harris. And they obviously need to get some help for Revis and Rhodes in the secondary.
Thanks, yeah I agree about the secondary. With Rhodes and Revis, its like we have literally 1/2 a secondary out there haha. I know Rhodes is no Ed Reed, but I conciously used words like "I want to see Rhodes scope the field like Ed Reed" and "I want to see Gholston be used like Terrell Suggs which doesn't necessarily mean they are as good as those players.
I don't know what Rex will do. What I know, he's the son of a legendary coach. He grew up in a state that I grew up in and knows that Football reigns supreme. When you grow up in a small town in Oklahoma Football is it. When you grow up in a football environment with a coach as a father play football and go on to coach at every level, actually coach. The pedigree is there it hasn't been there in our last coaches. Those are things I know.
Rex Ryan looks like a great hire. I am 1000% in favor of this. But why all the Herm-bashing? The guy got the Jets to the playoffs more often than any other HC in Jets history. And that schizophrenic "Firing Mangini was good/bad" stuff? Mangini totally sucked as a head coach. Cleveland will go down the tubes with him. And why the @#$% does everyone let Al Groh off the hook? He was the first to dismantle the Parcell's regime, but everyone blames everything on Edwards...
I'm not saying Mangini shouldn't have been fired, he sucked. It was just a little irresponsible for the coaching staff to fire him just to do it. Some years the pickings on the coaches are slim. I believe this year was one of them, the Jets kind of lucked out with the 3-4 D and Rex liking this franchise.
I'm cautiously optimistic about the hiring. I hope he's a tamer version of his dad. Buddy was an awesome coordinator but I don't think he was anything special as a head coach. He was sure entertaining at press conferences, though. As for Rex, I think he will bring excitement on the defensive side of the ball and hopefully he isn't hamstrung on the offensive side like it seemed we were this year toward the end of the season. If the offense can be as creative as Rex's defenses are, then I think we may have something special. Time will tell.
Once again, the front office gets it done! We signed what...our 12th choice for head coach? Great job Woody & T. Rex is gonna have those PSLs flyin' out the door! We'll duplicate the Ravens' defense by next season (for all the good it did against Pittsburgh yesterday). Oh yeah, we movin' on up! Another 3 and out...
He is going to unleash our guys from a drop back 3-4 to an attacking one. This causes turnovers which is what wins games. Pace was born to rush the passer Ryan will allow him to what he does best. I am really excited about this hire, now just fix the secondary get a Qb and lets see what this guy can do.
Ravens D was banged up during that game. And because of that defense a rookie QB led team made it to the AFC championship game. But yeah go ahead and keep being bitter...
Umm, he was our 2nd choice actually. After Cowher, who else did the Jets look to hire? They've wanted Ryan and have been patient in waiting for him. The FO also passed on Spags when they knew he wasn't the right fit for the team, and ultimately listened to us as fans. I'm actually pretty happy with the FO right now.
So, you wanted a HC who could sell PSL's? News flash... Cowher doesn't want ANY HC job unless it's Carolina. He also wants total control, and those days are done and gone. Apparently you weren't able to watch that Balt-Pitt game. It was the Ravens offense that lost the game, not Ryan's defense, but that defines the Baltiomre team since they moved from Cleveland, all D, no O. A rookie QB that simply was not prepared or ready to play in a big game against one of the best defenses in the NFL. 12th choice? I am REALLY trying to be kind here, but you push the envelope.
