I think you look for a coach that brings the kind of identity you want for your team. I think its clear Woody wants an aggressive defensive team, which isn't how Gruden or Shanny made their names.

This is a fairly dumb way of analyzing Hue Jackson's credentials. He was Baltimore's QB coach this year, and has developed Joe Flacco well; He was also OC of the Redskins Spurrier's last year, and learned from one of the best offensive minds of the past decade.

Yeah, the staff is the really important part. They are the ones that do all of the work.

Kewl, I wanted Rex. Now bring Ed Reed, Ray Lewis, Suggs, Scott and Ngata.

OK, done deal. Let's just hope this one works out and we're not doing this again in 2012.

I don't necessarily think it's a horrible move, but I agree with most of what you're saying. It's surely a step backwards. We're now back to square one with our head coach and he'll be doing OTJT here like Edwards and mangini before him. I don't think they should have fired Mangini unless they had Cowher lined up and in the bag, but that's over and done with.

That said, sometimes you have to take a step backwards to take two steps forward. I like what Ryan has done as a DC so I'm optimistic that he'll bring that type of success as a HC. Time will tell.

haha..think Woody may have been worried?

"The Jets made a formal offer to Ryan "about an hour" after the Ravens lost 23-14 to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship Game, the sources said. "

I dunno 'bout worried. Where was Ryan going to go? The Raiders? If he chose the Raiders we don't want him.

I think R. Ryan was a good hire for the Jets. I'm not expecting him to make a huge impact right away, but given some time, he could prove to be a very good HC. It is somewhat of a risk going with someone who has never been a HC at this level, but in this day and age HCing experience isn't proving to be the most important quality when hiring for that position...

We've seen guys like Whisenhunt / Harbaugh / Tomlin / Childress / Smith / Sparano / all get very positive results as HC's, although none have had previous HCing experience in the NFL. I don't see why someone like Ryan couldn't do the same. He's primed for a HCing position in my opinion...

I think the most important issue here regardling Ryan being hired, is who he'll be bringing in as his assistants / positional coaches. Those decisions are huge when bringing in a new staff, and they'll be responsible for reshaping the Jets franchise as we know it today. Like I said, I like the hire, and I think in time he'll prove to be a good choice for the Jets.....

    Latest NEWS on ESPN.COM

Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan has agreed to a four-year contract to become coach of the New York Jets, according to multiple sources.

Watch highlights from the Pittsburgh Steelers' 23-14 win over the Baltimore Ravens.
An announcement will come later Monday and a news conference introducing Ryan will be held Wednesday.

The Jets made a formal offer to Ryan "about an hour" after the Ravens lost 23-14 to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship Game, the sources said.

Ryan's four-year contract is in line with other first-year head coaches that have been recently hired, but a Jets source said it was almost identical to the $11.5 million deal that the Rams gave New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo on Saturday.

"Any coach who believes in himself wants the opportunity, and it's a great franchise," Ryan told ESPN reporter Rachel Nichols on Sunday night.

Ryan was hired by the Ravens in 1999 as a defensive assistant and took on the coordinator's role in 2005. The title of assistant head coach was added before this season.
