He's been asking for an extension for a while now I believe. They agreed to the guaranteed money, but he said after the season he was still interested in a longer deal.

I dont get why the GM is catering to him. What do the Jets owe him? He should give him a deadline for a decision that way the cap space is clear and the offseason needs can be put in order. The guy is a bum and we can only hope he doesnt come back.

Rex Ryan is going to want to build a dominating defense, and he knows which players will best fit his system. I have confidence that we'll throw cap dollars at Peppers along with other players that will finally give us what we most desparately need: a dominant defense.

    Moron...

Spends money, fired a coach that 90% of the fans wanted out...What more do you want from an Owner?

Now if you want to blast him for the "Cowher" stuff then I could hear a small argument...

Clearly Woody wants to sell PSLs, but what better way to sell PSLs than to create a team that can win? That's first and foremost what's on his mind, and since winning is his primary motivation he's doing all that he can as an owner to make that happen.

You should blast him for listening to the fans. Just look at some of the things that fans say on this board and you have to question why he would listen to fans. The fact that he made it public he pays attention to things like that is amazing. I dont think he is a bad owner but let the FO run the football operations dont be swayed by the fans.

My point exactly...Woody makes 0 football decisions. He has Mike T and the new head coach for that...

Woody does his part in spending money to make the team better...What the hell is an Owner supposed to do?

He fired a guy after a bad collapse and went to seek a coach to make the team win.

What else do we need? Have a Paul Brown-esque owner who spends the minimum cap space just so he can pocket money?

    Yeah okay.

I think their hands might be tied with restructuring. Something to do with the lack of CBA in 2010 and that it will be an uncapped year.

This is not totally true. There are strong indications that Woody was the one who wanted Favre. And that Woody is the one who wants Ryan. While it is about winning there is the issue of selling PSLs short-term with a new stadium opening, and winning long-term. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if Woody is willing to make some short-term moves that don't benefit the team long-term (e.g. Brett Favre). Of course I happen to think that strategy sucks. :breakdance:

"The Bucs needed to win just one game down the stretch to make the playoffs but could not get it done. He was hated by his players and hated by the fans as a thundering little runt of a dictator who was duplicitous and unfair with many of his players and not very well respected. In the past six years he has only managed to make the playoffs twice and failed to win a single game."

I agree Gruden isn't the answer. I'm not sure Peppers is either - although my concern would go away if we could find a corner to play opposite Revis.

Speaking back on topic for a moment, I think that Ryan's getting an offer from the Jets has been 100% set in stone since the moment Steve Spagnuolo accepted the Rams job. From everything that's been reported, the Jets have had their heart set on either Ryan or Spags (preferably Ryan) and Ryan was going to be hired as coach of either the Jets or the Rams (more likely the Jets.)

There's no way that the Jets would have waited to make a move until almost every other job is filled unless they were set on offering Ryan the job. And now that Ryan's other option to be a head coach next year is filled, there's no way he won't become the next head coach. Unless Woody and Tannenbaum are truly idiots and hire Schotty.

Deion Sanders in his prime wouldn't help us unless we get a pass rush first.

Good analysis. Still, Gruden is nothing sneeze at. He's got the experience, he's got the ring, and he is still young HC. Even after winning SB, he did have 3 winning seasons our of 6, 2 play-off appearances and a division title. The only problem I have is that we fired coach Mangini, who had a pretty good record for us too in the span of 3 years (2 winnings seasons, play-off appearance, we finally won against NE - twice) because of the team collapse after 8-3 record. Now, I believe Woody made a huge mistake there, but nevertheless, after this move, it would be simply idiotic to hire a guy who just collapsed after even better 9-3 record. Of course Woody's idiocy makes him unpredictable, but still it's too moronic to fire a guy solely after 8-3 collapse and then get a guy who just did the same after 9-3.

Rex will be our next HC, it's pretty much 100%, or as close to 100% as you can get. He is the best choice in my opinion, but again we are getting a guy with no HC experience, and there will be growing pains. Just like we had with Mangini. He may do well one year, then poorly next year. Hell, even experienced HCs go through motions (even Belichek had 5-11 first season in NE, not to mention his stint in Cleveland), and it's pretty much unavoidable someone who is a first time coach. The problem I have is that Woody got Mangini 3 years ago, and didn't let him continue after just 3 years, in spite of solid record (and excellent one for a rookie coach). Now biggest problem is we are starting over again after just giving Mangini 3 years of experience, which Browns will be benefitting from, not us. Now we need to give this expereince to Rex jsut to get to where we are now. Second problem is that Rex might not get enough time to turn this franchise around, just like Mangini didn't have enough time.

Screw Gruden. We need some one that has the respect of his players, and he ain't it. Let's move on with Ryan and help him build a franchise once and for all.

So he wanted Favre, I'll give you that. I mean, lets keep Penny after 3 seasons on IR? Could never get to a Championship game, won 1 division title, the arm strength was just getting worse, and a majority of fans wanted a change.

You get the chance to get a QB who went 13-3, a good year, but of yes the Giants game did him in.

Favre created a buzz, had the team at 8-3...Then he fell apart, as did the whole team...Do I make the trade again? An astounding YES. The Jets took a gamble, and while it didn't work, it showed that they were ready to move on from Chad since they knew he couldn't take them where they wanted...Favre didn't either, but it was worth a shot.

Now do I want Favre back for 09'? I don't know, tell me some better QB options out there?...Garcia? Ehh.

Well said. The Baltimore-Miami game was so predictable to any Jets fan because we've seen what Chad is. He's an extremely accurate qb that doesn't have the physical skills to take on a punishing defense. He never has. Raiders, Steelers, Baltimore, these are defenses Chad ran into in the playoffs that bitched him around because he didn't have the arm strength to get the ball to his reciever when it absolutely needed to be there. Those defenses are the type that either a great qb or an equally good defense will have to overcome in order to reach the super bowl and the Jets of the early part of the decade had neither.
