Like someone said Webster plays in a great Defense where the secondary is bailed out extensively because of a great pass rush. I think if the Giants did not have a great rush Webster, the entire secondary would be exposed quite a bit. In comparison Revis who has played in a poor defense with lots of inconsistency in terms of blitzing has put up very good numbers even if the pass rush is not superb like the giants
Your argument seems to be "the Giants' defense, outside of the secondary, is better than the Jets' defense; and because of this I don't think the Giants' secondary is as good as the Jets' secondary." I don't agree with that logic. You're arguing a counterfactual. If the secondary wasn't as good, Webster wouldn't play as well. And if my aunt had balls, she'd be my uncle. Also keep in mind that the Giants pass-rush wasn't nearly as good as it had been down the stretch. Webster still played great. And I think the numbers posted there speak for themselves. It's not like he has 11 INTs all of QBs chucking passes under pressure. His number of deflections (league-leading) and low completion percentage can't both be just because of the pass rush (or perceptions thereof).
Imagine if we do sign Asomugah, We would have 2 of the top 3 CB's in Football. Maybe Top 5. That would help us significantly in the pass. Especially with moving Lowery to nickel. An drafting a Safety or Corner.
I think Lowery could be a legit #2 CB next year. He has a year of experience and conditioning under his belt and won't fizzle like this year. I think he could be a pretty darn good compliment to Revis for quite some time.
Buddy even says Lowery got toasted this year, led the league in TDs allowed. How he makes the list is beyond me.... Lowery was awful, rookie or not. Wrong system? Maybe. If so, get him out of our system! Where is Primtetime Kid to tell us all why Lowery was awesome this year. Let's hear it bro.
You could argue that Revis should be over Webster but honestly Webster is a very good CB. I really wanted him in the 05 Draft (after we seemingly traded away our shot at Justin Miller in the first round).
because he suffered a crack in his hip in the opening game of the season and played through it, tough SOB
exactly. give us a d-line with pressure like the Giants and our secondary will shine. in regards to the very interesting, informational list: 39. Dwight Lowery, New York Jets Season Totals: 84 attempts, 7.32 YPA, 35.71 Forced INC%, 8 TDs, 1 INT My two cents: I feel bad for Dwight Lowery because he is playing in the wrong system. He doesn?t have the skills needed to play in a mostly man-to-man defense. I feel like he could excel in a cover two scheme, but he was abused as a rookie for the Jets. It got so bad that the Jets brought in Ty Law off the streets to take playing time away from Lowery. His numbers aren?t hideous, but his eight TDs allowed led the entire NFL and he was outmatched in many games. If the Jets continue to run their current defensive scheme, I have little confidence that Lowery will improve on these numbers. I agree the scheme is not ideal, however, he has proven he has the physical attribute to become acclimated. Also, pair his numbers with a d-line that couldnt pressure the QB, and you have a rookie who gives up 8 TDs. I feel Dwight Lowery can start, he isnt a perennial all-american winner, nor did he win the Thorpe Award, but he is resilient and plays hard. You cant say the same for our 1st round draft pick. Hopefully, having a defensive mind as HC, Rex Ryan, he can bring the best out of our defense.
LMAO. I love how you miss me. but No. The list is accurate. Statistically Lowery was awful. But he was a rookie. And you can argue that despite it being his rookie season, or not, he still sucks etc etc. Give him one more year. If in his sophomore campaign he doesnt show improvement. Then he truly is horrendous at his position. I feel Lowery will improve. But I also feel 39th is not justified. Possibly 48th or 49th. But still in the top 50. (I feel the same about Gholston, except Gholston is beginning to seem like an epic bust. I dont think Gholston will be showing any form of improvement in his play come next season. )
Nice find. Good read. Lots of Raiders. Maybe we should go after their DB coach as Defensive Coordinator.
He led the team in deflections and forced fumbles when he was benched. Even with getting benched half way through the season, he was still among the best in the league at deflecting passes and among the best secondary members (almost all safeties) in forced fumbles. This is with him getting picked on by every single team due to having Revis across from him and being a rookie. For a fourth round rookie, that is incredible, even if he did lead the league in TDs given up.
It was actually a mistake on my part; I forgot you all would have to sign up. Did you read past the 1st post?
It's tough if you play well, it's stupid if you can't play as well and end up hurting your team. See Brett Favre's tricep injury for further proof.
I am not going to disagree with this because it's a general football truism. The only 2 qualms I have with the "the Giants dline makes their secondary look better" argument are... 1. The implication seems to be that a better pass-rush will fix everything in the Jets secondary. This is only partially true. Players like Rhodes and Lowery will benefit greatly from a better pass-rush. However, players like Smith, Law, and perhaps even Coleman simply aren't that good. They need to be removed and the pass-rush improved for the secondary to shine. 2. This is more in regards to the Webster vs. Revis argument (and for what it's worth, I am more interested in defending Webster as a very good CB than saying he is better than Revis) but I don't like the rationale of "Revis is better because Webster has a better pass-rush. If the Jets had a better pass-rush Revis would put up great numbers." I don't like this because it's a counter factual argument and doesn't really allow itself to go anywhere real. I guess the only thing I have to say in direct response to you, Prime, is that the Giants pass-rush is not as amazing as you might think. The Jets finished with one less sack on the season than the Giants.http://www.nfl.com/stats/categorystats?archive=false&conference=null&role=OPP&offensiveStatisticCategory=null&defensiveStatisticCategory=SACKS&season=2008&seasonType=REG&tabSeq=2&qualified=true&Submit=Go
The giants CBs have it easy w/ that pass rush, try covering guys w/ our pass rush. Corey webster is not a top 3 corner.
How about moving Lowery to safety. We need help there. He might lack the speed to be a starting corner but he does seem to be ball hawk and sure tackler... THoughts?
The Giants secondary is good though. The defense as a whole is flat out better then the Jets. In total defense (YPG) it was 5th in the NFL and they were 8th against the pass. And Webster was a huge part of that but it helps having better players around you. Look at the Jets secondary. You have Revis (beast) and Rhodes (beast but used poorly all year) and then a bunch of liabilities outside maybe Elam who can make a couple plays but still isnt much of anything. And Revis did his job and played great all year.
