But, this is a good defense that showed flashes already and then inexplicably turned off the heat and sat back... Rex does NOT turn back the heat and sit back - Even if the defense isn't top 5 in the league, at the very least it will COME AT YOU!!!! And that's what I want to see - a defense that ATTACKS... I htink Rex can also build on what's here add another top player at S or LB and we're talking..... I'd draft Raji myself and make sure I had that NT spot locked up.
No love lost there. Look at whats happened with KC since he got there. I guess we will see how Mangini makes out, but if Rex works out, I dont really care what happens elsewhere. I think this guy has alot of upside and can give us an identity, not someone on the sideline chewin gum, shakin his head and after a terrible loss, telling us some of the "positives" he saw on the field. I want to hear "this is NOT acceptable" and see some emotion in our coach.
Let's hope so. We need to jack up our pass rush. On offense, maybe tweak the O-line and pick up one, good, ass-kicking WR, somebody like Crabtree if possible.
Yeah, he had so much time it was ridiculous. That defensive plan should be the ultimate poster child for everything Mangini's '08 season collapse exhibited.
Obviously he didn't build great D's but we were told how he was another belichick w/ his genius gameplanning. We were told how unpredcitable we'd be defensively. It never happened, we were also told how we'd be great offensively when we got Bruce Coslet. Just b/c you hire a good O or D coach doesn't mean that unit will be good.
I'm not sure any of us were ever "told" any of this about Mangini. Everyone surmised this though, as if Mangini was somehow supposed to be BB by osmosis. It's what the press conjectured and various other sports analysists and beat reporters tried to portray. And most of us bought into that somewhat, myself included. In the end, Mangini was a welcome substitute for Edwards although a gamble, just like Ryan is going to be a gamble. We've all got to be realists if nothing else, and go into the hiring of any of these unknowns with jaundiced eye.
Gambles are ok but in 3 years we can't have another revolt if things aren't going perfectly. Just like it takes players time to develop it also takes coaches time to develop and changing coaches every few years does not help.
"I read all the experts say we would've given up 150 yards, but, remember, he never finished the game for some reason," he said, smiling. "Whatever that reason is, they can cry all they want. Who cares? We're here. We're still playing, and they can watch us." Crazy.
junc i agree with u for once haha. I've disagreed with you about Herm, but u've been pretty spot on in this thread. For some reason I'm not at ALL excited for Ryan, big whoop he's a firey coordinator... add him to the list of firey coordinators we've had over the years that flamed out in two/three years. I hope he proves me wrong and provides INSTANT results, because he'll be fired if he doesn't and with no continuity we'll never win a SB IMO
oops..double post edit. Not sure what happened...it was there..then it was gone..let me try again. Thats my point..we assumed...assumed..he was a good coach because of where he came from. He had no such resume to earn that respect. Ryan has built a great defense with his own mind..and own ability. Nobody was "told" he was a great coach..we took it for granted because of the defense he came from..and the HC up there. Im sticking with the "anyone but Herm" defense...I sleep ok using that as an excuse..good or bad.
You had me at Hello. God I would love to see some better blitz packages, not the drop 7 or 8 everytime sutton runs.
plenty of coordinators have helped to buil great D's or Os and didn't turn out to be great HCs. Nothing is guaranteed. I like Ryan, I just hope he gets a chance here before the wolves come out and start begging for a new Coach. There will be growing pains w/ a 1st time HC, let's not run him out of town like we did Mangini in 3 years.
I was the biggest Mangini supporter there was when he was hired. But even I knew he had to go after this year. The Mangini of 2008 was not the same as the Mangini of 2006. His attitude was different. The way he ran the team, the defense was passive, and the offense always played scared. He lost that go for the throat, do whatever you have to in order to win attitude that he had when he first came here. Something was off, something was missing. It was pretty obvious. So it was better if he left. In any case I think Ryan has the personality and the record to succeed here. Do I know for sure? No. But I have a suspicion that the fans are going to get behind him pretty fast after the first press conference. I have been a Rex Ryan fan for a while, I love watching the Ravens "Go For the Throat and Score Some Points" defense. He was my first choice even before Cowher. And as long as he keeps showing improvement, the I don't think he will be driven out of town any time soon.
The 2008 Mangini was definitely not the 2006 Mangini, as you say. The final straw for me was going for the 3-point FG on the opening drive in Seattle instead of going for it on 4th and 1 from their 2-YL. That set the tone. Such an important game... so much on the line. And the weather was deteriorating, so who knows how many shots either team was going to get in the end zone? And we were running the ball so well. That one call was just the final straw. It sucked the wind right out of the team, too, on both sides of the ball. Hope you're right on him not being driven out of town any time soon, but with this fan base, it's "what have you done for me tomorrow?" Nothing? Then get out of town.
Coaches change, they evolve. W/ that attitude the Giants would have dumped Coughlin 2 years ago and wouldn't have a Championship. We hire a coach and barring kotite-esque disaster he should have at least 4-5 years.
Oh I know that all too well. That is why I stay hidden in the bunker most of the time. That being said, I have liked the Raven defense for a while and I am a fan of Ryan. I don't know anything for sure, but I think he can really do well here. I hope so. Coughlin is a different case. He had a track record that showed you what he was capable of. It just seemed to me that after 2006, for whatever reason, Mangini lost his way. It all just seemed different the last 2 years, a little off kilter. I don't know what happened, but I doubt another year would have made a difference. Personally I think the change will do him good and Mangini will do fine in Cleveland. But it wasn't working here, IMO.
It all starts with how he drafts. He can have the greatest schemes in the world but he will not have Ray Lewis and Suggs at Lb, Ed Reed at Saftety, Samrae Rolle at Cb and Ngata in the middle to stuff it up. There is so much you can do without talent. He needs to Do the best he can to get Revis, Rhodes and David Harris to reach their full potential and get other talented players to compliment them.
Mangini's track record was 2 of 3 winning seasons for a franchise that has struggled to see many of them. Coughling was a complete failure w/ the Giants through his first 3 seasons culminating w/ a playoff loss as an 8-8 team in 2006.
