That's a misleading thread title. Sutton hasn't been fired, he may be when the head coach is hired. No shit.
If that's true Spags has a leg up on Ryan in my opinion. At least he wants the opportunity to succeed with his guys and his players. Sounds like a smart man.
One theory on Ryan is that he lost an opportunity or two last year when he was asking for full control of the coaching staff with other organizations. So by taking on an OC he gets a promotion. If Shotty fails it gives him cover and perhaps lets Rex fire him the following year. For Rex agreeing to the terms makes sense. For us fans it makes a great deal less sense.
To me it just means we have to deal with Schott for another year at most. If he sucks again, without Mangini's ineptitude to hide behind, he is fired next year. If he does fantastic, he will be a head coach next year and moving on. Either way it just means that Ryan has to wait a year to bring in his guy. Which isn't terrible. Not that I am a fan of Schott, not in the least. If Mangini truly was holding him back, maybe we can see a return to the playcalling of 2006? And frankly, a little continuity right now isn't the worst idea. At the very least BS knows the players, and that could make Ryan's job of getting to know the offensive player's capabilities a little easier. Also if we have a QB competition with the young guys, it will be easier to see if they can handle it without having them learn a new system right now. So even though keeping Schott isn't my first choice, I can see the benefits to it. Just not longer than a year.
Wow, very few times in my life have I been called optimistic, I don't know how I should take it, lol. Just look at my sig, my first choice would be to show Schott the door. But I am trying to step back from my emotions a bit, and see the reasoning behind keeping the OC around for a year. (Although I have no idea if my reasoning is the same as Woody/Tannenbaum's.) Just as long as we get rid of Sutton and start implementing a Raven style of defense, I will be ok...for now. But a year from now, if the offense still sucks and Schott is still here, I will be the first to pick up my pitchfork and join the mob.
It really does blow my mind that a multi-BILLION dollar business like the NFL has never worked out a standard organizational structure for coaching and personnel management. This guy wants total control, that one is just glad to have a coaching job; this guy is an accountant-slash-lawyer, that one is a career football guy. It's so random.
Spags is a moron, no way an unproven Dc win little (few years) experience will be given total control. Even proven SB winning coaches have a hard time getting control. I now dislike him a little more. REX is the man.
The JETS players fit a 3-4 better, Spags would do what Mangini did, in getting HIS players...I personally do not have patience for that again. I want a coach who could work the system to fit players
