You beat me to it. Other than combine work-outs, which wont help us much in actual games, I'm not sure he has any.
There's a difference between combine speed and strength and game speed and strength. He's show NEITHER at the professional level (and for the people who follow Ohio State- admittedly I'm not one- he apparently showed neither in college, except for the occassional break-out game).
I'd be stunned if Gholston ever became anyth8ing more than servicable, and I''m not convinced that he'll even be that.
I think he was a combine monster who did not have football talent and shot up the draft based on 40 times and reps. I think belicheck laughed at us for letting Mayo and Mckelvin true football players slip. We fell for the combine hype and got burnt the same way we did with Robertson!
And you're wrong, and will be every time you post it. Maybe you should have been paying attention last year. Stop making yourself look stupid.
I know everyone hopes they are wrong like I do. I want to see him turn into the great player we all hoped he would be.
He was drafted 6th overall, he has to has some football skills to go with the biceps. He has shown in college he can get to the QB, it didn't just disappear in a year. I know the NFL game is faster, but he is fast enough to keep up. And it could be something like coaching. Maybe just the way Ryan, or another coach not Mangini, will teach Gholston techniques and the system will help him learn faster. Everyone has their doubts on Gholston, but I can't call him a workout warrior bust in just 1 season.
You have one sack or tackle from this past season to support the fact that im wrong? You have any explanation why a sixth pick in the draft can't get in the game on obvious rushing situations on a bad pass rushing team? Were you paying attention?
in all seriousness let's wait and see if he will get it with a different coach, not all learn at the same pace, the NFL is totally different than CF, maybe he is thinking too much when he is on the field due to processing of the info...he will have a year under his belt let's see if he can build on it.
I agree. I would LOVE to eat crow on this one,and will be the first on this BB to do so. But I just don't have faith. As an aside, I just went to a website (are we allowed to give other sites mention here?) and checked his bio. I'm sure everyone knows this, but I think it bares some mention here: He never picked up a football until his sophomore year in high school and had just one season of defensive experience as a linebacker before being converted to defensive end when he arrived at Ohio State. He rarely played his freshman year, and was injured for the year after game 2. So his only real playing years were junior and senior years. Junior year he recorded 49 tackles (21 solo) and 8.5 sacks. And we all know the monster year he had as a senior, although, of course, the asterik there is that the majority of his senior sacks came in 2 games, and he made just three plays vs. the pass. Again, I hope he becomes the player I thought he would be the moment they announced his name at the draft. But my fear is he wont be much better than the played we watched this past year, no matter who his coach is.
Actually he is not wrong. Although many on this board loved Gholston pre draft , there were many ???'s about him , and some serious doubt about his potential in the NFL. I said it back then I would love Ryan, either Long, Mcfadden, Dorsey,or Ellis but absolutely not VG, I even would have accepted Harvey or Rivers, I won't lie and say I expectd much from Mayo. When the board went the way it did the Jets IMO had 2 option, Ellis or trade down. I said it before the draft, I've said it all season, I'll sy it now, Gholston will not make it in the NFL.
hes been playin football for 6 years....i believe experience will give him the fb insticts..... i say in three years, he'll get 9 sacks in one season....
The issues with Gholston: 1) Only 6 years of football experience. 2) The fact that Mangini tried to force him to play 3-4 OLB where his main responsibility was gap control. Before he could rush the qb he had to protect his gap which is what make him look so slow and lost. 3) He's too top heavy. He needs to change his body this off season. Maybe he could get away with being that big in college but he needs to be more flexible and having all that weight in his upper body makes him stiff. I do believe that if he changes his body and we hire Rex that at some point in the future Rex will make him a nightmare for opposing qbs. It's unfortunate that we took a project with the 6th pick but it is what it is. Stop complaining about him and hope he becomes a good player.
Look, I never said he was "god-like" or anything other than utter crap this year. But based on how I've seen him play in College, I wouldn't write him off just yet, as so many are doing. I don't think he'll ever be a star, or someone who leads the league in sacks, or tackles-for-a-loss. But I'm willing to wait and see if a better Coaching Staff can help him develop into someone who can apply pressure and get about 7 sacks/year. Does that equal the #6 pick? No, but that ain't his fault. Nevertheless, would I (or you) want someone on this D who can get 7 sacks/year? Definitely. Let's see what happens when he works in the Offseason with LT, along with strength & speed trainers, and let's see what happens when the new regime teaches him.
I'm no expert, but this is what I've been saying all along. I honestly believe his stature had more of an effect than his mental lapses. If he can change his body composition, I think we'll see immediate improvements, just in quickness and pass-rushing moves alone.
This past season has no bearing on his college career. Are you retarded? Yes, he sucked this season. That doesn't change the fact that he was a prominent player being talked about in the top 10 of the draft long before the combine.
That's exactly what I'm saying. You can't deny what he did in college. I mentioned this in another thread sometime -- he beat Jake Long in college. Jake Long is now a solid starter in the NFL; that tells me Gholston at least has the potential to make plays at this level. Again, he was horrific this year, but that doesn't mean he's a bust already.
