This year it's taken me even longer to get over our usual disappointment, but my brother, father and I started making jokes about it. At this point, it's all we can do. If you can't make fun of yourselves, who can you make fun of (aside from the Lions) We can all speculate infinitely about who the next Bruce Coslet may be, but in the meantime NAME your all time JETS mishaps and year. I'd say the 1998 Denver game hurts the most because we would have certainly won the Super Bowl. The Mud Bowl would be next, but even then Washington hammered Miami in the Super Bowl behind John Riggins (ex-Jet, of course). I'd say #3 is the Cleveland double OT loss in 1986-87 because we had a good enough team to win and appeared to be getting it turned back around--plus we had that game won, up 20-10 at the 2:00 warning. After that, 1981, 1985, 2002 and 2004 were equally disappointing, we had good teams and didn't get the breaks we needed. Regarding this year, for me it goes on the also-ran list with 1978, 1984, 1993, 1997 and 2000 as promising regular seasons that crapped out at the end.
Great thread. Christ is it that time of year already. Catastrophy 1- Gastinuegate. Roughing up Kosar to screw us in 86 2- Mudbowl- fish fuck up the pitch with water to screw us 3- AFC champ- Denver turn on huge wind turbines to screw us. 4- Brandon Short screws our season by busting Chad's hand-2003 5- Doug Brien- never trust a man with 2 christian names 6- Vinny's achillies- we knew we were cursed after this game 7- 2008- 8-3 to missing the wagon, fuck you Favre
How could have the game won but come out losers as you posted "I'd say #3 is the Cleveland double OT loss in 1986-87 because we had a good enough team to win and appeared to be getting it turned back around--plus we had that game won, up 20-10 at the 2:00 warning" I guess you mean at the 2 minute warning we were winning but then we again collapsed as we have done so many other times
Can't fool you, champ. "Had the game won" as in outplayed them and had a 10-point lead with 2:00 to go. A figure of speech to say there's no way we should have lost, you win that game 99 times out of 100.
Could be but that is a coulda woulda shoulda & to say we would have won 99 at of a 100 times is also IMHO quite silly
How many teams can lament their bad picks as well. For example, the Jets were not the only team to pass on Dan Marino.
Your right we cannot really lament Marino as he won the same amount of Superbowls as Ken O'brien - who was more likeable and gave us some decent performances
I was a big O'Brien fan back in the day. Just seemed like the oline would allow him to get hammered most days. When he had time to throw, lookout.
The 1969 AFL PO game @ Shea when the Chiefs whipped us 13-6 stopping our shot of winning 2 SBs in a row
What's silly about it? I bet if one were to look up games where a team led by 10 points at the 2:00 warning, they win about 99 times out of 100.
The game is only won when the clock reads 00.00 & U have more points then the other side. Other then that the game is NOT won. Or to quote Yogi it is not over until it is over
Dykes came out in the same draft the Jets got jeff lageman, If I remember correctly - 1989. There was a lot of talk about the Jets wanting Dykes and lamenting the fact he wouldn't be available. Then he was available and they took Lageman anyway. Good choice as it turned out. The Pats took Dykes.
The 81/82 Playoff loss at Shea to Buffalo hurt pretty bad. First of all, it was a home game we were probably favored in, secondly it was to a division rival with plenty of smack-talk leading up to the game (by now head coach Jim Haslett if I remember correctly), and thirdly after an absolutely inept start to the game, the Jets teased us with what at that time would have been the greatest comeback in NFL Playoff History (this was before the classic Buffalo comeback win against Houston) until the final exciting, inspiring almost game winning TD was picked off at the goal line by Bill Simpson. F' me. Believe me younger guys, had that pass been a Jets TD, you'd have been seeing an NFL films show of that comeback for the past 20 years. (Just like Endy Chavez' Mets playoff catch - the game result determines the legacy) To me, this bitter roller-coaster defeat prepared me for the some of the other disasters to come, which obviously include: Mud Bowl (I has SB vouchers awaiting my pick-up at Shea the next day) Gastineau's folly Fake F'ing Spike (Marino that cheating bastard) Kotite Hire Missed FG loses the Lions home game (Al Groh) ah damn, I can't continue - too depressing.
Yea, I was way off. Looked it up, they drafted him in 1980. I was just getting into the team in the eighties so my memory is a little fuzzy.
