I know there are about 1 millon threads on this guy, but I wanted to start one on the perspective of his play next year based on who is named head coach. Teams are obviously never about one player, and this thread is in now way meant to be read as the Jets should make a coaching hire based on 1 1st round pick. Just some thoughts. My opinion is Rex Ryan is the coach out there that could change the way we look at Gholston next year. I think his aggressive ways and his experience with turning a similar player into a Pro Bowl player (Suggs - college defensive end picked high in the draft converted to a 3-4 OLB) could help Vernon. Suggs did show a few things that Gholston didn't early on - explosion, awareness, and hustle, all of which we have yet to see from Gholston. But I think with the right coaching, a full year of OTAs (which he didn't have due to that rule) a year under his belt learning some of the differences between end and OLB, and a full camp could have us thinking differently about this guy. Brian Shottenheimer has experience on the other side of the ball and I don't think he could ever get Gholston to peak....yes, with the right assts everything is possible, but you get what I am saying. Spags is a 4-3 coach, so this would prob mean going back to the 4-3 or some hybrid defense and this would further confuse Gholston, probably setting him back yet another year. I will admit, I am terribly worried about this kid. I can't remember in recent memory a rookie that was picked that high that 1) wasn't a QB 2) wasnt injured or 3) missed sigificant time with a hold out that had as little on the field impace as this kid. He was a mediocre at best special teams player, which has to have us all worried. But I really think if he has a shot at any type of success (and I think the kid wants to be successful, reaching out to the likes of an LT and seemingly saying all the right things) he will have it with Rex Ryan as our coach. Theone thing with Ryan is he expects his LBS to be very versatile, which doesn't necessarily bode well for Gholston. But I do think his aggressive nature will allow Gholston to do what we think he can do well, rush the passer. Too many times this year when he was in the game, I saw him in on 1st down trying to figure out what to do agains the run, or on passing downs where he had back side contain or coverage responsibility and looked lost. I think Mangini and co could have used him more in situational 3rd downs to help his progress. Third and over 8 yards where he can just rush the passsr and not worry about run contain or play action coverage on the backside. You don't want to put the whole defense at risk by catering to one youngster to learn, but there were times during the season I would have liked to see the coaches use him in game situations that he could have had success....... But I think if we don't see improvement with him under a Rex Ryan, he could really be one of the all time biggest busts in NFL history.
First, let me openly admit my bias. I was thrilled when we picked Gholston, nervous as shit when I heard how soft he was in the first interview immediately after he was picked, and disappointed beyond shit when I watched him play throughout the season. So I am an official Gholston hater, the way some crazy, irrational woman holds onto the hate of a boyfriend who cheated on her 15 years ago. That said, I do not understand your definition of the phrase "similar player." Let's compare year 1: G GS Total Solo Ast Sck Int Suggs: 2003 Baltimore Ravens 16 1 27 19 8 12.0 1 Gholston: 2008 New York Jets 15 0 13 5 8 0.0 -- 0 Granted, they played on different defenses. But there is NOTHING similar about these two as football players. EDIT: I can't get the formatting right on this, but you get the idea.
i was actually going to start this same thread...... i really think rex could turn him into a "suggs" or "ware"
Same with his lack of speed and strength. If you are a LB and can't shed the block of a HB AT ALL, my faith in your football strength is minimal.
And do you know the extent of his lack of football extincts? Unless you've been Coaching him, I don't think you really have any authority on the subject.
You can' teach Talent. He was a workout warrior that shot up the boards. We got had yet again in the draft. End of story.
Yes those also. Maybe VG supporters are expecting RR to put a cow prong to him before every play to get him up to speed. Amazing how fans get so attached to a players before he proves that he is even a keeper. If he was a 3rd round draft choice or lower instead of the #6 overall pick we would not even be talking about him since he would have been cut just like Schegel another OSU LBer was.
Or, amazing how fans are ready to bail on player before he's shown over A COUPLE OF SEASONS that he's completely inept.
let's see what VG can do with a full offseason and training camp under his belt. If he fails to produce in the upcoming season....then i'll join the lynch mob.
Mario Williams was a De that was drafted as that and his crime was being taken ahead of Reggie Bush. Gholston was suspect in College. He had 15 sacks and 13 of them came in three games. He got lost for games at a time playing next to Laurinitus. He got drafted that high because of the combine. He has shown nothing to make me believe he is a football player.
You're flat out wrong comparing him to Schlegel too. Gholston, even if he was a 3rd Round pick, wouldn't have been cut because he has more potential. His production at Ohio St was far far greater than Schlegel's production, so it's plausible that Gholston can still amount to something because we've seen what he's capable of.
Instincts are something U see immediately & since when on the field he look like he lost in space indicates he has none whatsoever. Be logical & just think for a second we needed a pass rush desperately right? Now VG is supposed to be a PR expert right? Now when he was on the field he was knock on his a$$ right or did not know what to do. That is not coachable it is innate. If U chose to think otherwise that is OK for me I am just giving U my HO & sorry if my opinion does not coincide with urs
They guy is a pass rushing specialist who could not get on the field in obvious third down passing situations on this sorry Jets team. Time to join the mob now he is a bust!
We are talking of his instincts now are we not. Again U are entitled to your HO & all I am saying if he really/truly has no FB instincts U will find that those are uncoachable
I can't just yet....don't get me wrong, i feel your pain....but if we hire Rex Ryan, i want to see if he can develop VG into something other than a paper weight. It's too early to cut loose on this guy. Let's see what a REAL defensive mind can do with him. If Rex can't do it....i'm pretty sure nobody can.....and THEN, i will grab my pitch fork and torch....and join the mob.
