They're still searching for the coach to bring them their second world title. The far-reaching search to replace Eric Mangini continues, but the Jets have narrowed their list, according to a league source. The source who is familiar with the Jets' plans said the team is deciding between Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan for the job. The Jets also plan on keeping Brian Schottenheimer as offensive coordinator under either man, the source said. Schottenheimer interviewed for the head coaching vacancy and impressed many in the organization. They fear the public backlash that would occur if he was given the head coaching job, though. Schottenheimer served as Eric Mangini's offensive coordinator and was never a fan favorite. The Jets finished 25th, 26th and 16th in total offense under him. This season, the offense vanished during the team's late-season collapse, struggling on third down and a failing to get the ball to playmaker Leon Washington. A separate league source said that Ryan impressed the Jets' brass during his interview Sunday in Baltimore. The meeting lasted five hours, and a source close to Ryan said he had a good feeling after the interview and thinks the Jets have good personnel in place. The problem for Ryan is he cannot be offered the job until the Ravens' season is over, which could be after the Super Bowl. If the Jets wait that long, it could be challenging for Ryan to put together a coaching staff. With the Giants eliminated, Spagnuolo could be offered the job this week. The Jets likely will invite Spagnuolo back in the coming days to interview with owner Woody Johnson, who was out of the country when he interviewed the first time. A source close to Spagnuolo said the Jets had not contacted him about a second interview as of yesterday afternoon. Spagunolo was busy yesterday with the Giants, closing out the season. The source said he will sort through the teams interested today and schedule interviews.
It disappoints me BSchott will stay as O.C., but that's a lot better than him being head coach. Still, I really wanted him gone. Maybe the new coach will pressure him to make better playcalls.
The Jets need to let the new HC decide who his assistants will be. If they force someone on him he can't be held accountable. It would just be another mistake by a stupid orgnanization.
Whose fault will that be if they force Ryan or Spagnuolo to keep Schotty as OC? Man, this pisses me off even more. Third HC in a row that isn't allowed to choose his own staff.
If the Jets think Ryan is the guy, they shouldn't hire Spagnuolo just because they don't want to wait to hire assistants. Don't fuck this up Woody, if Ryan is your guy, then wait for Ryan.
I Dont understand why this team is so obsessed with Shotty Jr. He has done nothing in the 3yrs he's been here except find a way not to get Leon the ball more then 3 times a game.
Is there any league rule that prevents Rex Ryan from telling the Jets who he would want to hire as his assistants? Is there any league rule that prevents the Jets from making offers to those guys now?
In no way am I defending him..but for whatever reason... he has a good rep. league wide as an "up and comer". This appears to be similar to the Jason Garret situation in Dallas. If either Spags or Ryan falls through...Schotty would be in place. He's a franchise security blanket. As for Schott's job as OC....again..you cant judge an HC candidate by his performance. It is a totally different position...They are 2 completely different things. I will say this for keeping him: At least we'll have continuity on offense. Personel learning a new system can set a franchise back at least a year. W/ all the veterans we have on O...keeping schotty's system in some ways is a positive.
Yep, the HC spot is more important than a few assistants. If we have to wait another week or 2 so be it. For what I have read it sounds like Rex may try to bring Mike Pettine over with him. (Maybe for DC? Please toss Sutton!) So if he keeps our offense in place, he wont have to go searching for a whole new staff. At this point a lot of assistants are being shuffled around so we wont get any top picks anyway. This will give us some continuity on the team and keep us competitive next season. After next season, Rex should have an idea who fits in and whats working. If he needs to make some changes, he will have plenty of options the day after our season ends
Of course you can judge a potential head coaching candidate, at least to some degree, by his performance as a coordinator. You think he just ignores the Xs and Os once he becomes a head coach?
That's a great question. How they can fire Mangini yet keep the OC is beyond me. BS is a bunch of b.s. This is good news though; as that POS won't be our head coach and hopefully Rex(preferred choice) makes the D good enough to carry the team as we field yet another 25th ranked offense next season.
...with Favre, Jones, Washington, Good receivers in Coles and Cotchery, Keller and our (finally) good line.
By halfway through the 2006 season, smart teams stopped falling for his gimmicky bullshit offense, including the timing routes he was using to try to mask Chad's lack of velocity. Plus, he had actually been trying to establish a running game in 2006. That went the way of the dodo.
Well I think that it is more important to have a defense in the top ten as opposed to the offense....we had the AFC leading rusher this year, what we were missing was a monster defense, if we could get a shut down defense then I think you will see our offense up in the top tier, only because they will get more opportunities to control the ball.
But it's not just his x's and O's. There is alot more to being a HC than just the scheme. You have to be able to deal w/ the media, have good player relations, make crucial in game decisions, assist in personel decisions, and have a much more "Big picture" focus. Is the way Schotty's offense that you see on Sunday give you insight on those factors? Hell he's never even been allowed to talk open to the media. And again, I'm not defending him...I'm just stating you cant judge his entire resume solely on the offense's performance. At least when it comes to being an HC candidate You also have to consider that alot of times regardless of the coordinators X's and O's..you have to consider the personel, perhaps the calls are getting over-ridden by the acting HC(or in some cases the owner).
I'm not a huge Schott fan but... Total offense: 16th Passing offense: 16th Rushing offense: 9th And we scored 42 touchdowns on offense which probably would have been a bit more if Favre didn't implode in December. Now those aren't really mind-blowing numbers but the offense was pretty productive through the first 3 months of the season. The issue was more playcalling and utilization of the talent available.
