I don't think that Sutton necessarily has to go if Ryan becomes the Head Coach. The main criticism with the guy is that he steadfastly refuses to send pressure at the QB, and I feel pretty confident that Ryan wouldn't let that happen. I have to imagine that as HC Ryan would exercise a lot of control over the defense, even more than Mangini. And, for that reason, I could see Schottenheimer staying on as well (it sure would make Ryan's job easier to have offensive continuity if he does intend to focus more on the other side of the ball as I suspect.) As for Rex himself, I'm really glad to hear that he's emerging as a real contender for this job. I've been rooting for him since Mangini was kicked out the door, and I think he's exactly what this team needs: an aggressive, experienced leader. He's long overdue for a chance to run a team and I very much hope that he finally gets it with the Jets.
I think it is in the best interest of the Jets to keep the offensive staff and playbook mostly intact. I really hope Ryan sticks with Schott as his offensive coordinator and builds his own D with whoever he chooses for DC. With two young QBs likely to battle it out for the starting job it is some comfort to me that at least they have been in the offense for 3 years now, it would not be a good idea to change the playbook right now.
I don't know if I'd go that far, but if we hire Ryan and sutton stays, it would make me question Ryan's judgment/defensive smarts.
sorry I meant to say Nolan was going to Denver, I thought I checked off "quote message in reply" box but I did not.
I'm pulling for Ryan. Hopefully he brings an improved attitude and Blitz schemes to our Defense. We still need to replace Thomas badly. We lack speed off the edge from OLB and a true passing rushing monster to replace Coleman would be more then a welcome sight. There is a lot of work to be done both personal and scheme wise to become an elite D.
Rex Ryan is my first choice. But, the only thing that worries me about this situation is if the Jets wait around for him and he takes another job. Then the Jets have egg on their face. They'll be left with a situation where they'll have to go to another guy and pretty much say hey you weren't our first choice but do you want the job now that we've been turned down. That wouldn't be the ideal way to start a new regime.
there's a possibility that one of the conditions of Rex's hiring is that he retains certain coaches....not saying that will happen...but it's not uncommon. if it does happen...there will be bedlam.....because Sutton should've been sent packin' last offseason....but that's neither here nor there.....this is the Jets FO we're talking about...not a lot of intelligence behind those doors.
Good god I'm getting bombarded by Ravens fans. They all predict the Jets demise if they hire Rex Ryan. The claim is that he is Herm Edwards all over again. A real players coach. They predict a locker room meltdown of epic proportions. I dunno if they are for real or just busting my chops.
I can see Schottenheimer staying for at least one season under Ryan to see whose fault it has been, but there's no chance Sutton stays. If Sutton stays then it tells me Mangini was an epic failure as a head coach, or that our entire organization is composed of tongue-chewing short busers. I have never felt like this before, where I was in wait-and-see mode on so many topics with this team. Until January 2010 we won't have a clear idea of whether Mangini was the problem, or the rest of the coaching staff. Personally, I'd like to keep Sutton on as a coach, but not as coordinator. I have a feeling he's a very good practice coach, but just not an in-game guy. Who the hell knows though? What if, just if the problem on both sides of the ball was Mangini, and the good play we saw from the team was before Mangini decided to play cutesy games?
Hard to imagine him being another Herm Edwards. The true test is what happens on the field and it looks like the players respond to him pretty well. I think you're getting your chops busted because they're jealous.
Tampa Bay's defense played with more heart and intensity than any I can remember during Herm's time as an assistant coach. They would've gone to hell and back for Dungy's staff. Same with Buddy Ryan's players back on the '85 Bears. You can't tell how an assistant will do as a head coach until he gets the top job, that's just the way it is.
Herm Edwards background was nothing compared to Ryans. He wasn't even a coordinator before becoming Jets HC, Ryan has been the coordinator for one of the best defenses in the league for years.
In my opinion....MY OPINION....if we hire Ryan, Sutton goes. He'll bring in one of his Baltimore assistants.
And as much as we trash Herm, he did lead us to three winning seasons, and he wasn't completely unsuccessful. You can win with a players' coach. I'm not convinced he would be a major players' coach anyway, even if he "likes to have fun."
Not only that, he took a very successful defense and overhauled the entire scheme with success, keeping his core playmakers and coaching them up. I'm not sure how how he will do as a HC, but he has my utmost respect as a coordinator.
Part of the Key to the Giants run last year was TC toning down his act. A total push over is bad. A complete dictator is worse.
