Any love for Brian Cushing and Brian Orakpo? (note: This is less of a suggestion and more of me asking what you think)
OLB: Everette Brown, Greg Hardy, Brian Orakpo Orakpo reminds me of Gholston with one more year of school, more likability/hype, and an injury history. Not that he's a bad player or that he's not ridiculously talented. He'll just need to develop if he's drafted by a 3-4 team. DE: I can't think of anyone I KNOW will come out. Not a really stunning DE class for the 3-4, but maybe we can land a NT.
ILB: Jasper Brinkley SoCar, Rey Maualuga SoCal, Scott McKillop Pitt, Josh Mauga Nevada, Daniel Holtzclaw E Mich, and Worrell Williams Cal DE: Evander "Ziggy" Hood Mizzou, Jarron Gilbert San Jose St, and Tyson Jackson LSU Linemen that might work out as 3-4 DEs: Pannel Egboh Stanford, Jeff Schweiger San Jose St, Jarius Wynn UGA, Kyle Moore SoCal, Jeff Owens UGA, Darryl Richard GT, Alex Magee Purdue, and Demonte Bolden Tenn Mitch King of Iowa is an interesting guy -- he's too small to play inside and too slow to play outside in the 4-3. He could end up being a late round project as a 3-4 end -- he's a high effort guy that could be worth the chance.
"Holy bad scouting report Batman!" Let's try not to compare the Big 10 Defensive Lineman of the Year to an undrafted slob out of Maine.
Why not? It's not exactly like King is off your charts gifted here. They're both fringe guys who might do well in a rotation. DeVito is the one between them with size.
As much as I hate to agree with Mr.Electric, that is a terrible comparison. And the 3-4 DE class is IMO better this year than next year. This year you've got the likes of: Tyson Jackson, Evander Hood, Fili Moala, Jarron Gilbert, Vance Walker, Ricky Jean-Francois (declared), Alex Magee, Darryl Richard, Corvey Irvin, Will Johnson, Ra'Shon Harris, Mitch King, and Pannel Egboh to name some. We should definitely take a 3-4 DE this year.
All the players I really like in this draft are either defensive players or RBs. I hope the Jets don't screw it up and trade up for Crabtree or something. And I think I would be happy with any USC defensive starter entering the draft. Pinkard and Ellison are good, Maieva is small but good. Clay Mathews is slow but might make it as a quality backup/hustle guy.
I think we should take one, but I'm not a huge fan of any of those guys. Tell me when the Suh, Oghobaase, McCoy, Odrick, Heyward, Jones, and/or Austin come out. Then I'll get excitede about a 3-4 DE class.
VO, Marvin Austin, Jared Odrick, and Gerald McCoy could all play DE in the 3-4. Austin is probably the best of them. He's actually fast...for a defensive tackle. Austin runs in the 4.6's at 295-300 pounds. That's freakish ability. He fits well at a 4-3 DT or a 3-4 DE. UNC Butch Davis, a former NFL coach, knows what he's doing -- Austin has great coaches at the college level...that can't hurt. If Austin stays healthy, he has the physical ability to change the way his position is played -- I have never seen a defensive tackle get off the ball faster. In 2009, he could contend for ACC Defensive Player of the Year.
Ricky Jean-Francois i think he could be a great player who could eventually replace Coleman in the starting lineup he should have waited to improve his stock but he could be great in the 34.
A 3-4 OLB 2010 prospect that I'd like to see the Jets draft is this guy: USC's Everson Griffen - He's probably one of the best athletes to EVER play defensive end. He's 6'3 265 and runs in the 4.4s. He'd be an awesome pass rusher in the 3-4. He plays to kill the quarterback.
I think they could translate very well. A 3-4 DE's basic job is to eat up blockers and help collapse the pocket. Those guys all have the size, strength, motor, and athleticism to be ELITE 3-4 DE prospects IMO. And they blow this class' potential way away. I don't see how a guy like Tyson Jackson fits the 2 gap 3-4 DE position, but for some reason he's everyones #1 guy. It's like everyone forgot about Marcus Spears, and Jackson isn't even as good as Spears.
He runs in the 4.5s and he'd be an early entrant next year if he declared. He is one hell of an athlete and extremely athletic but if you think we need to suck to draft Arrelious Benn in 2010, then we might as well go on strike for the 2009 season because he will only declare if he has a monster season and at 6'3 265 lbs and a 4.5 40 he will be a Top 5 pick.
