He looked 100% the opposite of what you described in every postgame press conference of games they lost. Could the reason he's taking his time deciding (as he was told to do by our GM) be because he's not selfish, and is thinking that one more comeback would only hurt the team? I mean, could there possibly be two sides to a story? Maybe?
I don't think our team is that good, I think both Miami and NE are much better than us and Buffalo when healthy may have more talent that's forgetting the QB position. Throw some young blood out there with a new staff and build rebuild the program. This is an over rated team that has drafted far to few players and tried to fill the gap with FA. This is not an up and comming team this is a mid pack NFL team that peaked in game 11 and is on the decline across the board. Think 86 Jets before the collapse as the top and 96 as the bottom. I don't want to see a 10 year process of moving backwards. We have a perfect opportunity to build something with a new staff. Time to blow it up. Unload Favre trade Coles, Barton and Jones right now for picks cut Woody and rebuild. The FA thing didn't work the cheap young staff didn't work.
By rookie I of course mean a QB that doesn't have a lot of actual playing experience in this league. Clemens will never be the QB period so he doesn't count. I'll rephrase it for you though. None of the QBs on the Jets roster other than Favre will QB this team next year and if he doesn't come back they will do everything they can to find somebody else. Obviously if they can't they will have no choice.
So, if you are right then how in the hell is Tannenbaum still the GM with all of the money they have spent? Unfortunately, they could never afford most of those move you mention because they all came with big bonus money and the cap could never handle the fallout.
Winston, we don't need to rebuild. We just spent 3 years laying a foundation, and it's not a bad one. What we need to keep doing is just adding talent and more depth. I hope we can get something for Coles, Barton, and even/especially Jones.
You mean the same story that's now repeated itself four times over the past four years? Favre is all about Favre, and could give a damn about anyone else. Is that really that difficult to see?
Why do we owe Favre all this time to think anyway? This isn't Green Bay. He hasn't done a damn thing for New York.
Nah, nothing at all: He not only helped get your team back on to the NFL map, increase television exposure / ratings, bring more potential fans to the Jets fan base but also helped the turn around process for this team by helping them go from 4-12 to 9-7 in one season. No, he did nothing at all for you ingrates
Team back on the NFL map = Who cares? Increased television exposure = Who cares? Brought more potential fans = Like we need more fans? Going from 4-12 to 9-7 = With the talent on this team we should have been 10-6 at the MINIMUM.
I don't think it's an either or choice between winning now and blowing it up to start over. Beware of binary thinking. As a practical matter I don't recall the last time a team announced they were blowing up their roster, anyway. That's not likely to happen. Some vets could even be traded in the normal course, or even let go. But the vet signings to term contracts, those guys will not be all shipped out of town, anyway. The answer is to go through the roster, determine who they want to stay, not just for a year but more than that, and try to get rid of those they don't. Meanwhile the Qb question and some others will have to be answered, such as deep threat at wideout, depth at DL, what can be done to improve the pass rush, and filling the #2 Cb with someone better. I would also like to see an upgrade at safety. All that can be done without starting over.
It was just another year of having huge hopes, until December. Crash and Burn. We don't need another so called veterian QB to come in here, give the youg guns a chance.
I agree that the Jets are closer to being a rebuilding team than a win-now team. They do have some building blocks in place. They have an Offensive Line that could become dominant if Brick and Mangold continue to develop. They have a couple of nice playmakers on Offense in Washington and Keller. A few decent young players on D such as Revis, Rhodes and Harris. But they obviously have a lot of holes to fill too. How much more does Thomas Jones have in him? We need to draft a RB. Who is our QB? How about a WR who can get open once in a while? Then there's the Defense..... we have zero depth behind Jenkins at the most important position on that side of the ball. We obviously need to shore up our secondary and find someone like the player that Gholston was supposed to be. We cannot accomplish all of this in one offseason. I think that the Jets must take a couple steps back before they can start moving forward again.
When I say blowing up I mean moving on from Favre, Coles, Thomas Jones, Damien Woody, Barton and maybe even Ellis. It's time to build around the handful of talent we have that's young and that includes at the QB position. We did the Daniel Snyder thing and it didn't work, we can be the Redskins and field a nice team that is in the mix for a wild card and maybe even makes it once in awhile or we can move forward with a new staff. No guarantee that we won't suck either way but this team as it's currently constituted is slow and getting old at several positions and we need young blood coaches who can teach at the positional level and leadership at the top.
We noticed that after the Titans game... Seriously, though, I don't have any problem with him taking his time as long as it is only a few weeks and not months. He must feel like hell after a season at his age and the automatic thinking must be "retire" as soon as the last game is over. My concern is exactly the same as it was when he first came to the Jets. We have no idea what we're getting because at his age the ability can just drain away very quickly. A healthy, motivated Favre can be great for the team as we saw up to 8-3. A hurting Favre, possibly one who is wondering if he should even be in New York, can only hurt the team.
He did something alright...there's no telling if his presence last year set us back 3, 4, 5 years or more.
I like Mangini, I didn't think the Jets had the balls to cut Chad and start Clemens. By getting a 39 year old stop gap the only set the rebuild back 1 or 2 years instead of 3 to 5 years. I think Mangini showed his inexperience this year and it cost him. Fortunately for him he is young enough and smart enough to not be considered a retread yet and can bounce back.
Not less difficult to see than that Ratliff has "impressed" against nothing more than grocery baggers. There's a good reason you should care about the first three things. Revenue. That's what allows the Jets to pay the talent they bring in. Unlike some NFL club owners, Woody has shown that he is willing to spend money to field a team. Hate him or not, there are owners out there who just pocket the money rather than build a competitive product. As for your minimum, I think you're way off. 8-8 would have been a huge improvement for this club over 2007. Favre gave us an additional win. Should we have had more? Yes. Should we be surprised we didn't get them? Not necessarily. If you'd have told me on August 31, 2008 that the Jets would win nine games, break a team's perfect season, hold first place in the AFC East, and have a shot at the playoffs in week 17, I'd have laughed you off and called you insane. Sure, I'm disappointed since my expectations changed over the season, but in perspective, we had a successful season. --------------- BTW: I totally disagree with getting rid of Thomas Jones. This is a two-back league now, and he, along with Washington, make an awesome one-two punch. The problem has been underutilization. Hopefully that changes in the new regime.
