I caught some serious flack for comments I made about Vilma and Lowery

While discussing the lack of "progress" players made under the latest regime. I included these two players as individuals I felt regressed as a result of the last CS.

I commented that Vilma had potential to be the greates Jet Linebacker of all time. I was of course referring to the guy who first came into the league not the guy we traded to New Orleans who had regressed.

I would like some more imput on this argument. My statement was based on potential and Vilma's play his first 2-3 yrs. Can anyone name me 3 middle linebackers all time for Jets who came into the league and created higher expectations then Vilma of could name me 5 Jet Linebackers of all time that "flashed the potential Vilma did or stirred as much excitment.

If you can I am wrong

Secondly I stated Lowery Regressed during rookie year. Someone commented how can you regress during Rookie Year.
I truly believe he did. This site was full of Lowery Threads in September talking about what a steal this guy was, by novemeber these threads were talking about how toasted he was getting.

Vilma was great in a 4-3. We no longer played a 4-3.

defensive scheme alone caused his demise? A guy with Vilma's sideline to sideline ability, football intelligence and aggression, could not play in a 3-4? Is this his fault or the Coaching Staff for not using him correctly in the 3-4.

Yeah, I think so..everybody said he was undersized to play MLB in a 3-4.

Todd I agree..the negative on Vilma was that he was too small to shed big blockers in the 3-4..however, once we went out and got Kris Jenkins to occupy blockers in front of him, trading Vilma was a bad idea. While I like Barton, Vilma and Harris are a much more dynamic option at the ILBs and are way better in pass coverage. Donnie Edwards was great in the 3-4 in San Diego, but he had big guys up front taking on blockers so he could make plays. I think the CS made a big mistake in releasing him and I was disgusted to see him go. As a coach, you should play to your best players strengths. Mangini played to his strengths, not his players.

    Amen,
maybe you can be objective on this point also
Did Lowery show improvement during the course of his Rookie Year?
One year prior Revis improved week to week "despite our coaching"

I remember the joy among Jets fans when Vilma turned out to be such a quality pick. A first-round draft pick that actually looked the part and, more, showed flashes of being great. He was seen as the face of the defense if not the team and something to build upon.

I remember Marvin Jones having the same sort of impact before his rookie injury, and John Abraham was an impact rookie linebacker as well. Vilma, as a rookie, was as good or better, in my opinion.

If it is not working you have to fix it. Vilma was not working in a 3-4 defense. I wish him well. Good 4 -3 linebacker. Rarely hit guys behind the line of scrimmage though.

Lowery was picked on starting in week 1. I don't think he ever regressed. For some reason people sucked him off on here for half the season though.

Did you really need to start another thread on this? Was the last thread you just recently started where we're already discussing...Vilma and Lowery...not good enough?

Vilma could so play in the 3-4 scheme if the guys in the 3 were of NFL calibre. Id like to see Vilma behind Jenkins. Barton is getting old and slow. I wasnt all that impressed with David Harris this year. Might be time to look back into re-signing Vilma who looks to be bulked up,why not we brought Coles back.

Vilma would be great playing next to Harris. He never really had the chance. Having Jenkins up front only helps. With Mangini gone there's no bad blood. I would be thrilled if this happened.
