He couldn't crack the starting line-up because Mauluga, Cushing, Rivers were the starters last year, and then when Rivers graduated Kaluka Maiava replaced him without the D missing a beat really.

You put Clay Matthews on most other defenses he would be a starter, and on many he would be a star. He might not have the measurables but he has the intangibles - he plays with an intensity and is a hard worker with a great motor. Just a great football player. He will slide on draft day because of his inexperience and his unimpressive measurables, but I think we can nab him in the 6th and he'd make a great backup.

    Taylor Mays.

if we cant. which i'd be slicing the ol' wrists.

i can settle for a wideout, like Maclin, Britt, or Harvin...

ultimately our neccesities are defensive end. MIKE DEVITO. get him out. he's horrendous.

strong safety. Elam/Smith/Reed. this isn't a safety by committee league.

wide out. we lack the player to stretch the D, and allow the huge plays underneath. even so, over the top, with the rare deep catch by coles, cotchery, or keller. thats if they dont drop the ball.

with all the offensive lineman, and linebackers, runningbacks coming out for this draft. i do believe one of the top wideouts will slide to us. i know denver will grab mays, but we need to do whatever we can without sacrificing the integrity of our draft class to get him.

You couldn't be more wrong with this -- neither of those guys will make it out of the Top 10.

The Chiefs biggest defensive need is probably at corner. Unless they trade out of their original pick, they're taking a QB.

Also, Shaun Hill was Mike Martz's guy, not Singletary's. O'Sullivan was a turnover machine...Who knows what will happen in SF? If Stafford or Bradford fall to them, they may pull the trigger on either.

You would've said the same thing about Brady Quinn.

The Chiefs biggest need is by far the DE position after not getting a DE to replace Jared Allen. Without a pass rush it doesn't matter if you have Nnamdi and Champ Bailey as your corners, the WRs will have enough time to get open and the QB will find them. 10 sacks on the entire year. An NFL record for least sacks in a season by a few. Look at the Giants secondary - nothing really special there, yet the pass rush makes them look and play better. Plus they have Thigpen (and Croyle.)

Singletary said Shaun Hill was a warrior and that was the kind of guy he wanted as his QB. Singletary is a defensively-minded coach and SF needs an ILB and secondary help badly. You can get into the playoffs with a great D and a game managing QB (Ravens, Titans, Vikings (Frerotte), Miami (not so much the D)) but not really the other way around. Look at the Saints. Or the Falcons who made the playoffs but quickly exited due to their crap D. Next to be out is Arizona for the same reason. I'm not saying they definitely don't take a QB, but I can certainly see them going defense first.

The Chiefs had like 6 sacks last year. They need a pass rush more than anything else.

And while I don't think Stafford and Bradford won't make it out of the top 10, I didn't think Jay Cutler would either. Maybe Singletary doesn't want to make the same mistake Nolan make and draft a QB before the rest of the team is ready.

They had 10 total sacks, which is awful -- but there are such things as COVERAGE sacks too.

Losing Jared Allen on defense hurt the Chiefs the most...I don't think they'll spend another first rounder on a defensive lineman. They've done it 2 out of the last 3 years and they haven't seen many results. 3 of their last 5 first rounders have been spent on defense - Derrick Johnson in 2005, Tamba Hali in 2006, and Glenn Dorsey in 2008. Dwayne Bowe and Branden Albert were the only non-defense first rounders.

Their defensive line has potential with Hali, Tyler, and Dorsey - that other defensive spot is a big hole...Michael Johnson could be the choice but I think they'll go QB.

Jay Cutler was the 11th overall pick - it's not like he slid THAT far.

I like Ziggy Hood alot, but there is a good chance he'll be there in round 2. If we could get Mays and Hood I'd go crazy. Beef up this D, run the rock and don't let the QB make game killing mistakes and we'll be 10-6. There will be enough recievers to take one later.

Right now, it's looking like Hood will go late first, early second. I don't know if he'll make it past the Colts in the first.

I still think he has a good chance of shooting up the boards -- especially after the bench press at the combine.

your saying that because your from connecticut. even as a current undergrad at uconn, i wouldnt draft him unless he was a 4th or 5th round selection.

i posted this in another thread, but i felt it was more suitable for this discussion.

To bolster out line now. we need a DE/DT to rotate in to give guys on opposing O's a different look, a different style. Allow Jenkins and Ellis to come out for some plays, and keep the defense balanced, and aggressive.

one guy the entire site will love, that NOONE has mentioned is:

    Vince Oghobaase DT- Duke

I hope we can steal this LB in the later rounds to replace Murrell or Spencer and actually have someone who could perform on game day if needed. Despite even though both dont command much money, I want to have a tough, hard nosed linebacking corps. Sutton has recruited subpar players to fill the void if Harris, Pace, or Barton get injured. Thats inexcusable.

I like Spikes, and Curry, but this guy from cal we cant pass up.

    Zack Follett LB- Cal

i still feel that our top priority on Offense is WR, and on Defense is Safety.

I like Taylor Mays, but I am beginning to doubt whether we have a chance of drafting up to get him. Patrick Chung from Oregon is a player I like alot to be a capable safety in our 3-4 defense.
