Just a thread to get away from the HC mess.

Our three most obvious areas in need are pass defense, pressuring the QB and SPEED at WR.

Below are not top ten picks and some may call them reaches at #17, but they fill glaring needs.

    1st. Taylor Mays S Ht 6-3, Wt 225, Spd 4.5 Southern California
Has great size and CB speed, yet he delivers a BIG hit

2nd. Michael Johnson DE Ht 6-6, Wt 250 Georgia Tech
He is evrything Vernon isn't, including a true DE that can get to the QB.

    3rd. Darrius Heyward-Bey WR Ht 6-1, Wt 206, Spd 4.3 Maryland
Fastest Wr in the draft and has descent hands too. Most WR with his speed are only 5'10" and 180 pouns.

4th. Derrick Williams WR Ht 6-0, Wt 195, Spd 4.35 Penn State
Not the speed or size of Darrius but comes from a better program and good hands. Still the 2nd fastest in the draft after Darrius.

And now for the QB of the future, and I mean future after a year or two as a backup riding the pine.

Chase Holbrook QB Ht 6-5, Wt 240 New Mexico State
He has the arm, size and experience as a starter. Best of all he is the most accurate QB in college as a starter for the last three years. Yes his team sucked, but he didn't.

YEAR CMP ATT YDS CMP% YPA LNG TD INT RAT
    2006 . 397 . 567 . 4619 . 70.0 . 8.15 . 96 . 34 . 9 . 155.06
    2007 . 381 . 543 . 3866 . 70.2 . 7.12 . 82 . 26 . 18 . 139.15
    2008 . 309 . 456 . 3361 . 67.8 . 7.37 . 84 . 25 . 14 . 141.63

Chase Holbrook is a quarterback at New Mexico State University. Despite being 4-8 as a starter, Chase Holbrook was second in the nation in passing. Chase Holbrook completed 397 out of 567 passes for 4,619 yards and 34 touchdowns. Chase Holbrook has the potential to end up in the top 3 all-time in NCAA history for passing yards, passing touchdowns, passing attempts, and passing completions, despite only playing 3 seasons. Only twice has he passed for under 300 yards in his career. Against Idaho, Chase Holbrook passed for 342 yards, including a 96 yard touchdown on third down. Against nationally ranked Boise State Chase Holbrook completed 49 out of 62 passes for 526 yards.

Yes he is a stretch, but so was Cassel. I say use a 7th round pick and see what he can grasp. Yes he could be gotten as a FA but what is a 7th pick these days anyways.

Wow, Chase Holbrook. I always kind of liked him from New Mexico State. I'd love to take a flyer on him, but I have no clue when he'd be drafted right now.

Most sites and pros have him somewhere betwenn number 20-30 on the QB ranking. (most show him as a FA signing)

This might sound dumb, but I just want a playmaker on offense so perhaps Heyward-Bey? On defense I just want to see someone that can actually rush the quarterback. Perhaps if a monster DB is available I wouldn't mind that either...

Taylor Mays could be utilized to blitz off one side and Rhodes off the other. Mays has very good quickness and speed. Plus he can be used to cover WRs on CB blitzes. Size od a LB and speed of a CB, wow.

I think Darrius Heyward-Bey is the best all around WR in the draft. His size is good and speed unmatched. Would be our #1 WR within one season.

I know it's early in the whole draft process, but the two guys I am really really really starting to like are Taylor Mays, and Donald Brown.

Tyson Jackson to occupy 2 blockers next to Jenkins and free up Pace please. How many years in a row are they going to ignore a 3-4 end?

Well I think this is a good draft for WRs and now that I think of it, that is a need that most people overlook. Our recievers are decent, but nothing amazing by any means. We need a reciever to instill FEAR into opposing defense, just 1 player could open up the whole passing game for us. A beast wide reciever would also allow attention to be taken off Keller and Leon, making for a sweet passing game. What do you guys think?

Personally I want a big ILB. Especially if Rex Ryan comes in to coach. I think that Barton will be a cap casualty and they need someone who can cover. I would really like Maluega, or Brandon Spikes.

The CB would be an interesting one to bring in. With that size and hitting ability the Jets could run a "Big Nickel" (playing him more like a safety) and this could help shore up the shaky pass defense.

If Rex Ryan is our coach, we should trade up to 10/11 and take Mays.

He's a ball-hawk, big hitting, fast Safety. Mays is a Rex Ryan kind of guy.

With all the troubles our defense had, you want to take a RB that early?

I'd be interested in Shonn Green if he fell to the early 2nd.

Johnson doesn't have the proper weight to play DE in a 3-4 defense.

Darrius Heyward Bey is a receiver whose brightest days are to come. He's explosive, and will run in the 4.2's. He will jump into the 1st round because of it. He was a track star in H.S. and for a time thought about competing in the olympics.

Maryland does not have a good track record of getting their WR's the ball. With DHB this continued. In fact in some games this year, the only time he touched the ball was on reverses. Who's fault this is, well...the blame should lie in Darrius' hands as well as our QB, and O. Coordinator. His hands need work, as does his route running, strength and blocking but when he puts it together he will be a force. After watching him for 3 years (he RS'd) I believe he will, and he is a worker.

The long ball is definitely his strength. His long speed is I believe one of the tops in the collegiate game, if not the top. Keep in mind he will measure in at above 6-2. He's great when the ball is in the air, very athletic. What isn't known outside of the Maryland fanbase is what a great guy DHB is. He will be an asset to whatever team he joins in the clubhouse and the community. He's a worker and a smart kid. Ralph Friedgen (Maryland HC) said he's one of the best he's seen, and he has been around. I'd be more than happy to see DHB in the Green and White.

Heyward-Bey would be an intriguing pick. I saw him a little bit during the season and he was very impressive.

I would be happy to get Brandon Spikes too.

Go Aggies!!!!!!!!! I'm an alum so I;d love having a former Aggie as a jet. That being said, to be honest guys he's a system QB. Strong arm, good leader, but I don't see him as a solid NFL QB. Of course, I'd love to be wrong about this one.

Once I saw Derrick Williams listed as a first round pick I stopped reading.

Chase Holbrook is the QB of the future? Derrick Williams as a possible first round pick? I thought we wanted the Jets to not suck?

    LMAO. i couldnt agree more...

the obvious needs that we need to develop and have a foundation for the franchise are essential everyone loves to forget about free agency. and how many veterans get cut after rookie signings. fill the other less important voids with free agents, that are not incredibly expensive and go nuts on draft day.

the strategy from a practical standpoint, if I were a logical GM, (not the asshole that drafted a kicker in the 1st round), would be to trade up for mays, make similar moves this year like we did last year to lock in a late 1st round pick, like we did ala Gholston/Keller, except hopefully this year both players perform to expectations.

and the reason why I want rex ryan, is that he could coach Gholston into the player we drafted him to be. I'm confident about that. and if we do get mays? with ryan?

    the defense is unreal.
