I hate the way he writes.... thats why he's a PFT guy. some meh points and some awful speculation. We will see who is the true genius with the draft now that Mangini is gone, but if a damn good coach comes here it can continue... don't forget about Joey Clinkscales, our College Director of Scouting... he has a lot to do with the success of the past few 1st rounds.
I don't want to generally defend Tanny, but the part criticizing him about being close to Mangini while he was considering his future in conversations with Woody is a bs criticism. It's his job to assess the performance of the most important person who reports to him and to report on his assessment to the man who pays his salary. Duh, that's the way it works. But should that fact preclude him from being friendly with Mangini? No. Should a business type friendship have precluded him from performing his responsibilities to his boss? No. You can be quite candid, and also fair, in assessing someone's performance while still liking them and hoping they succeed. If they fail in the end, and you have to advise your boss that is what you are seeing, how is that a bad thing? If Mangini had gone a good job he would not have been fired. It wasn't Tanny's fault, and it wasn't Tanny's responsibility to sugar coat what he was seeing.
All based on hearsay. Of course it has to be a huge conspiracy. It couldn't be that Spagnuolo really didn't give a "knock-out" interview. And no one knows if Shotty really is the frontrunner, it is all speculation from "someone close the Jets organization." No one knows. We haven't heard from Tanny or the front office. We don't know their feelings on ANY of the candidates. To make these grand generalizations, which many on this board are also inclined to do, about Tannenbaum's motives before this all plays out is premature to say the least. Also it's PFT, crap is their standard.
This guy just bashes the Jets every chance het gets. Tannenbaum has actually done a good job for us outside of Ghloston and Favre(the more we hear is that the owner wanted Favre). I am happy w/ tannenbaum, the only way I would have been ok if he was gone was if we got Cowher and he had his own guy.
I don't think much of it is far-fetched at all. Tanny went from being the behind-the-scenes cap guru to the GM, nudging Bradway out of the picture. Does anyone but me find it odd that Tanny, the negotiating wizard, took part in such bad trades during the Herm regime (hello, Jolley, hello DRob), then Bradway takes the fall for it and Tanny takes his spot unscathed? This guy has been the least accountable party with the Jets for the past 7-8 years, Herm included. Plus, he was behind the ridiculous contracts during Parcells' regime.
Parcells gave out those contracts, it was Tannenbaum's job to move things around to keep us under the cap which he did but BP gave out those insane contracts then skipped town.
You obviously did not read my post, or perhaps you meant to quote somene else's, as my post had nothing to do with yours.
So when exactly did the entire Jets universe turn on Tanny? my god. He fired the head coach! we all wanted him fired after Seattle! he did what you asked! He has been one of the best drafting GM's this franchise has ever had! He did exactly what we wanted last off season! He got Favre! We were all pumped about it! ok 98% of us were! Now that we have been without a head coach for a week, he is only out for himself. Jesus you guys are assholes. All you have to believe are rumors about why Cowher didnt come here. Also is it so hard to believe Spags had a horrid interview? he interviewed with like 5 teams in 2 days, while preparing for 3 different opponents for a playoff game. Not exactly ideal circumstances to put on a great interview. Brian might have had a wonderful interview, his father is Marty for god's sake, he could teach him how to interview, plus he already knows our offense so he could easily explain how he would try to use it. Defensively all he has to say is I would do this and this differently, than eric/bob, then I would look at these candidates as a potential DC hire. Not exactly hard.... So clearly it's not hard to imagine circumstances in which these two things happened. When news came out who had the better interview and could be the leading candidate we flip out as always. And blame the GM rather than the circumstances. I want 2nd interviews with Spags and Ryan once their teams are out of the playoffs.
Bullshit. Parcells gave the OKAY to the contracts, Tanny was his cap guy and chief negotiator. And we all know how that turned out. For the world's biggest Jets fan, you have a pretty narrow view of how the FO operates.
That makes sense. What also makes sense in regard to all the Tanny criticism is that the Jets truly do not want to hire someone who wants "full control." Woody Johnson made this clear... very clear, at the podium on the Monday Mangini was fired. Nothing has changed as far as I know. Truth be known, there are VERY few teams anymore around the league in which one guy has complete, full control. So this is the big bug-a-boo with Cowher and now Shanahan and it should be no surprise as to why those guys didn't race here for interviews. I do agree with Woody on this... I think it's become almost impossible for any one man to do all the jobs well. We're talking personnel managment, draft responsibilty, cap management, etc. and then head coach as well. One guy doesn't do all those thing nowadays and do them all well.... not in today's NFL. And as far as I'm concerned, Tannenbaum has done pretty well for us at what he does, so that's one area I don't want changed. So, yeah, of course we're looking for a Spanuolo or a Ryan or even Shotty Jr. We're not primarily considering them because "they pose no threat" to Tanny, we're primarily focusing on those guys because they are the best fit and we need a HC, period, not a Jack-Off All Trades.
If you believe that I don't know what to tell you. Parcells had no regard for our cap, he handed out the contracts, Tannenbaum helped clean up the mess. Parcells gave Mo and cox big deals walking out the door, you think Tannenbaum was responsible for that? Parcells gave the orders, Tannenbaum marched.
Yeah a guy who said he would give up player personell control if Cowher came here really sounds like a power hungry, coniver.
I have no doubt that's the way it went down. Parcells was such a control freak he even managed, in his closing days, to engineer what is porbably one of the most embarrassing coaching situations in Jet history... that of the Belichick "Queen For A Day" fiasco.
227, You make another good point, and I agree. I am not a Woody fan, but having your HC also be head of all football operations is not a good thing today. For one the cap is too complicated, and I have always thought while there are some benefits for the most part it detracts from your job as HC if the players are also negotiating their salaries with you in the off season. At least allow the HC to defer to some compensation committee or something, otherwise it gets too in your face and that carries into the regular season. There should be some distance between HC and upper management to allow the HC to do his job unencumbered by such considerations. Now on the other hand input by the HC on personnel decisions is not something that needs to be prohibited, either. You can have that and still have the FO controlled by someone other than the HC. Any candidate who insists on being both HC and head of the FO is quite rightly probably not a good choice for the Jets. Look at Miami and Parcells. That was not his setup.
The article seems like conjecture and bullshit..... Whether it's true or not, it's written in factless tabloid fashion.
BINGO! There are reasons for separation of church and state. The same should apply to head coaches. Let them coach and get the most out of players without the baggage that comes with having to negotiate with them.
I will say one thing...I think that we can all agree that Tannenbaum is not a true "football guy". Ron Wolf is a "football guy". Bill Parcells is a "football guy". So is Bill Polian. Hell, you could even make a case for Terry Bradway. Tannenbaum is probably a great capologist and a good negotiator but he does not know the game like other GM's who have been around the game for 25-30+ years. With that being said, does it make sense for Woody to put so much blind faith in this guy? Do we think Mr. T may have just a bit too much power? Something tells me that this guy will be around here for quite a while because he will always have a sacrificial lamb (coach) to fall on the sword for the team's failures.
