I really thought then when we let Mangini go so quickly after the season that our front office had a plan already in place. A plan they had been working on for a period of time. I thought even that Cowher might have agreed to come to us BEFORE the fireing. The fact is, we had nothing set, which has made the Jets problems worse. We are floundering without a coach and I think we look the fool. Mangini had us going in the right direction. We have had some of the best drafts ever under Mangini. He brought some great talent to us. I hate to say this, because I for one am a Favre fan....It was the QB play down the stretch that did us in, NOT Mangini. If we had a more consistant QB in those last few games we would certainly be in the playoffs. Now we're a team quite probably without a quarterback OR a head man. If anyone needed to go, it was Favre. Letting Mangini go was a mistake, ESPECIALLY because we had nothing better in CONCRETE before we let him go. We look like idiots.
You realize the Wild Card round of the playoffs isn't even over yet, right? You realize that a good number of the prime HC candidates are still working for their current teams, trying to win a Super Bowl, right?
I also realize we just fired a coach who went 9 and 7 and was one consistant quarterback away from probably being in the big game.
^ He was also a coach who failed to learn from his mistakes, not only from one game to the next, but also from one season to the next. He was a coach who took a team with sh*t loads of talent, and helped them become lackadaisical, predictable, and inconsistent enough to go 1-4 in their last five, only barely outcoaching Jauron for the one win, and missing out on what had seemed to be a sure playoff birth. It's nice to give a young coach time if he shows that he will progress from year to year, and continue to hold the confidence of his players. Mangini was stagnant and uninspiring. Giving him more time would yield more of the same.
He lost his team. but very bad decisions, and horrific defensive play calling doomed him with fans, the team and most importantly the front office. But I will agree it was hasty to let him go so quickly without a plan in place. if it turns out to be true that the fact Cowher was pissed because Woody wouldn't talk to him then that is the biggest mistake of all
Maybe your not watching the games, I saw a HC who keep making the same big mistakes over and over. Unforgivable. He needed to be fired.
Just like an Bill Bellicrap became a great coach in New England? Such a stupid statement. Mangini is NOT Edwards. If you look closely you can probably see they're 2 different people.
Not sure what Mangini did during his tenure here that makes people believe we lost a great one. I was very excited by what I saw out of him in 06, but he frustrated me greatly the last two years. This guy is no gem. He's an ordinary coach who is very replaceable.
He needed to be fired if we had a better coach lined up. We didn't so firing him was probably a mistake.
One, we didn't fire Belichick. Duh. Two: You're right. Herm never had a healthy Jets team go 4-12. Herm never had a healthy Jets team miss the playoffs. I'm no Herm apologist, but facts are facts.
Thanks for saying this. It needed to be said and it's something I've been thinking about for days now, ever since Cowher said "No thanks." I'm not opposed to Mangini's firing, mind you, but I am opposed to doing something like that without a freakin' plan. You say firing Mangini was a mistake. I'm not sure firing him is the mistake, I think it's not having someone else more qualified and lined up that's the mistake. We certainly have egg on our faces now. The whole thing is a freakin' mess. It's like a guy who quits his job without lining somethig else up first. What TF are we thinking?
This is all rash nonsense. When the Jets hire someone, all these people claiming we made a mistake with Mangini will be excited about the new coach. Unless, of course, we hire Brian Schottenheimer.
I don't agree with your logic. Some of the top coaching candidates are still coaching teams in the playoffs. The process has just begun. Was Bill Cowher the only hire worth firing Mangini over? I don't think so. Mangini wasn't very good. We needed an upgrade. The guys we're interviewing can be upgrades. They may not be, but it's worth taking a shot on because I believe we saw Mangini's ceiling.
If the Browns hire the Fat Retard they just show that they are an even more inept organztion than even the Jets.
But we seem to be grasping at straws now. Every day I see more names popping up and more interviews being lined up... some of the names I've never even heard of. Unless there is something we don't know about... some deep, dark secret that's yet to come out on Mangini... lazy, never showed up for work, relied too much on his coorcinators, never had a clue as to the playbook, was dispised by all in the locker room... goes to the mens room and taps his feet in the stall next to players in an attempt to troll for queers.... SOMETHING... Tell me some good reason why this guy had to go so quickly (immediately within 15 hours) without having someone else lined up.
