If Favre retires our QB situation could be troublesome. Do we go with Clemens or Ratlif? Sign a free agent? Make a trade? or Draft a QB. Staying in house Right now we have three QBs on our Roster (minus Favre) - Clemens, Ratlif and Ainge. Only Kellen Clemens has in-game experience. Kellen Clemens - Pros - Has Regular season starting experience. Strong arm. Good mobility. Cons - Bad pocket "awareness", inaccurate passer, questionable leadership. We don't know much about Brett Ratliff. But from what I can tell based on what I saw this preseason he has a great arm, good size - 6'4 220, goes thru his progressions and made accurate passes. Granted this was against a 3rd string defense, but I was impressed with how he handled reading the defenses and going thru his progressions to find the open receiver. This to me was more impressive than the deep bombs to David Clowney. Word is that the Jets F.O. loves Ratliff. He's a young guy that a new coach can mold. Erik Ainge is an interesting option also. I was really happy when we drafted him. He is a big QB with some mobility. He has a decent arm. His true strength is his leadership skills. However I do not see Ainge as a viable option to be our starting QB in 2009. Sign a Free Agent If Favre retires there are some interesting options on the Free Agent market. There are two veterans who could come in and start if needed (Kurt Warner and Jeff Garcia). My personal opinion is that Warner will stay with Arizona. That leaves us with Jeff Garcia. I have always been a big fan of Garcia's. He's clearly not the biggest guy on the field, but he does win. The only problem with bringing him in here though, is we do not run the west coast offense. Based on that and that Garcia is nearly 40 I do not see this as a viable option either. There aren't any other FA QB's worth discussing Trade The only QB that stands out in my mind that may be available to us via trade is Cleveland Browns QB Derek Anderson. He did struggle at times in 2008, but he was mostly let down by his teammates. Braylon Edwards had one of the worst seasons I have ever seen by a WR. Anderson's biggest problem is that he locks onto his primary target. If he can correct this flaw I feel he can be a great QB in this league for a long time (he will turn 26 next year). Drafting a QB Personally I do not like this option, but it should be discussed anyway. We draft 17th in the first round (possibly 16th if SD wins or goes to the Super Bowl). The one QB that could fall to us in the 1st if he comes out that I would want is Mark Sanchez. I really like him and think he could have a great NFL career. Stafford and Bradford should both be picked in the Top 10 and I really don't like Tim Tebow as an NFL QB. Sanchez has played in an NFL style system but could still use more seasoning. Looking thru our options if Favre retires, I think it would be best if gave our QBs a chance or possibly make the trade for Derek Anderson. I do not like the Free Agent or Draft route for 2009.
The question is do you think we are built to win now. If so then we Sign Garcia and shoot rubber bands at the sky yet again next year without a Qb of the future and sign one that is probably as done as Farve. Anderson might have been a one hit wonder. Braylon Edwards and Winslow had great years in 07 to make him look like and All Star and Jamall Lewis as well. If you don't think we have the horses then go in house and see how we look going forward. A Qb must be found the question is do you want to pro-long the agony and shoot for the playoffs next year as opposed to finding a guy who can get us there for years in the future. IMO I think we go via the draft and in house.
I'd rather bring Vinny back, before i bring Favre back. Just watch that lame, "if we win, we win, if we don't we don't", pep talk, before the game. He's lame, doesn't have the fire, anymore. FAVRE SUCKS, GET RID OF HIM!!!!!!!
No secret as to what i want to do, i would be happy to go with Ratliff or a drafted QB, preferably Tebow in my mind but Sanchez is a nice option, i also like a QB called Graham Harrell who will likely be available in the 2nd-4th round area.
If we're going to trade with Cleveland at all it should be for Braylon Edwards, not Derek Anderson. Edwards price should be considerably lower considering the year he just had, but he is still a mega talent who just needs a change of scenery. At the WR position, he is a dynamic gamebreaker who can be the true #1 receiver we've wanted since Keyshawn left. Perfect complement to Cotchery. At QB, I absolutely loved what I saw out of Ratliff last preseason. I think it would be prudent for the Jets to draft another QB but that QB should be put into a competition with Clemens / Ratliff / Ainge. I don't have much faith that Clemens will pan out. He doesn't seem to have the right mindset for a QB. Then again, a year behind Favre may have helped him considerably in that arena. New year, new season - new opportunities. Give our guys a shot.
I guess, I could have put that option out there, but if NE does Franchise him and does indeed find a way to trade him there's no way they trade him to the Jets.
No chance. He will be franchised and traded outside the division or he will be the NE starter again next year. He won't be on the Jets.
Sorry are you saying 'because every college QB will become great' (insert sarcastic smiley) Who said they would?
I've been saying all along that drafting a QB is pointless, because we have enough young QBs on this team already. How about developing the Qbs we have? Would you agree to that?
If you re-read my initial post, i actually said: So yer, I'm all for developing the talent that we have, but if i have a QB i like and he is there when I'm picking, i would take him. Who said you should take a QB in the draft every year? some famous coach said that i think but i can't remember the name.
I agree all the FAs are too old and there's a reason Derek Anderson gets bad press; he stares down receivers, makes poor decisions, and he's a statue in the pocket. Trading for Anderson would be a terrible idea. In my opinion the only reasonable options are to start KC/Ratliff or draft a first rounder. Then, if KC/Ratliff works out, we trade the first rounder and try to get our deposit back.
I agree with this assessment. I would really be disappointed if out of 3 of these guys that we drafted that none of them would pan out. Ratliff seems to show the most promise at this point, but who knows. I would prefer to deal with some growing pains than deal with time lost to a new QB getting in sync with our core players when in a year or 2 we may be right back to where we are now.
What QB are you drafting in the 1st round? Tim Tebow? I would get sick to my stomach if we used a 1st round draft pick on him.
If the Giants can win with Eli Manning we don't need an all star QB, just pound the ball, get a receiver that can actually burn a defense and see who wins the starting job between KC and Ratliff.
