this is the only "hangup" i have regarding Rex Ryan....what was the glaring reason he was passed over in Miami, Atl and Balt last season? I'd still wouldn't balk at giving him a chance...but it makes you wonder if his father's reputation for being a hothead is screwing him over. I just hope Denver doesn't entice Spags enough to forego the Jets' interview....Bowlen is known for being a great owner for coaches to work for....and the QB situation in Den is a tad more stable than ours....hopefully Spags is reluctant to put his house up for sale
you have a wishlist? nice... except one guy removed his name from consideration, and the others are bound by post season laws... going to be a long time until we get a new coach. by the way, love the avatar...
I'm in the Ryan camp but I'm warming up to Spags after a little more research. Right now the slight edge goes to Ryan based on his 3-4 experience and family connections which I hope will help bring in a killer coaching staff. As for getting passed over, Miami is obvious, B-More as it was explained likely wanted more of an offensive minded HC, and maybe Mike Smith just interviewed better than Ryan in ATL. He had two different organizations to vouch for him (Ravens, Jags) while Ryan has only been with B-More. Smith's record with Jax was impressive and it showed that he could run a 4-3 D as well as a 3-4.
About this passed over stuff, Singletary couldn't even get a coordinator job in the NFL and now he's doing well. And yes, a lot of rookie coaches are doing well this year. In '06 the Jets had a rookie coach do well, remember that? And being passed over in BAL doesn't mean much, maybe they were afraid of losing his value as a defensive play caller. And WAS took Jim friggin' Zorn over Ryan, that doesn't make their evaluation of Ryan seem all that intelligent. So I'm fine with Ryan, though I really want Shanny.
85:45 again it still appears to be at nearly a 2:1 ratio in favor of Ryan. Seems this is the general opinion of these two. two to one in favor of Ryan over Spags...
I know alot of people on this board have been a big fan of Rex Ryan and his Nasty Defense and im all for it. I think he has the fire and his players love playing for him. I Think he would be a good HC and well be getting a great 3-4 Coach. I Like Spags alot but switching to the 4-3 might do us more harm then good at this point.
Terrell Suggs is an unrestricted free agent this season. Rex Ryan could persuade Suggs to come to New York. No more lack of pass rush... Ryan is the better candidate for this team RIGHT NOW - simply because he knows the 3-4 and Spags doesn't. Whoever becomes the next Jets' coach needs to light a fire under these players. It needs to be HIS team.
Electric... I thought 3 of the Ravens Linebackers were up for FA this year.. Suggs, lewis and Scott. i could be wrong, but I could have sworn this was the case. If this is so, I seriously doubt that Baltimore can afford to keep all three. In which case, which ever one isnt able to be resigned, Ryan could potentially lure over here. While I would love Suggs, I think it is more likely that the 2 resigned would be Suggs and Lewis, leaving scott as the odd man out.
You're right, Ray Lewis, Bart Scott, and Terrell Suggs are all free agents. Terrell Suggs will most likely sign the biggest contract he can find. He was their franchise player this season, and I don't know if they can/will give him the tag again. Ray Lewis should stay with the Ravens for the rest of his career, I can't see him playing anywhere else. Bart Scott would be a nice off-season pick up as well. He knows the defense and he's been successful in it.
Spags owns the Patriots. He made Josh McDaniels look like a Pee Wee coach in the Super Bowl. 'Nuff said. For anybody who wants Shanahan: do you really want a guy who was so stupid that he traded us for DeWayne Robertson? Our defense would be set back another 5 years from respectability.
just caught the "Around the League" segment on Team Cam (NFL network)...they had Pat Kirwan on, and they were talking about the coaching carousel. He believes that Rex Ryan is a perfect fit, given the schemes the Jets have in place...but he also said the PSLs are coming into play, and believes the Jets will make a HARD RUN at Mike Shanahan. He added that Shanahan could have interest in the job. interesting stuff.
All things being equal (which they aren't - Rex gets the nod imo) I'd rather not have the giants be mentioned everytime our HC is. JetsFan makes a great point in favor of Ryan: his coordinators would likely be better than Spags. That imo played a large hand in the fate of Mangini (his inability to get quality coordinators).
Mike Shanahan? Didn't he blow the division title and playoff hopes even worse than Mangini? If Woody wanted Mangini fired for his late season collapse, how can he hire Shanahan in spite of his? Besides, after Elway retired Mike had 10 years to work with Denver, and they never went passed first round in play-offs (1 play-off win overall if I am not mistaking). Woody fired much younger coach after 3 seasons, in spite of 2 winning seasons and a play-offs appearance. If Mangini is not good enough because of late season collapse and good but not stellar record in last 3 years as a youngest coach in the League, why would Woody want someone who had even worse late season collapse, and good but not stellar record in last 10 years in the League, while not being very young? That makes no sense, and would be totally hypocritical on Woody's part... OK, this explains why Woody's interested then.
You would take a Callahan / Mularkey / Jauron over either of these two "assholes"? Don't get me wrong, I think the Jets would be best served with someone of Cowher's caliber... but who out there other than Cowher himself is of that caliber? Shanahan... I'd bet doesn't coach this year... Holmgren... Definitely isn't coaching this year... Marty Schottenheimer... He would drive Jets fans nuts with his style of football and playoff playcalling. So... who does that leave? These two "assholes".
