The nucleus and the talent is there. Favre wasnt too blame as he didnt have enough time in camp. He should have been held out of at least the first 3 games. The coaching staff needed to make adjustments and failed. With or without Favre with a new head coach in place.A few added players both offensively and defensively. This team rebounds in 09 and makes the playoffs.
Actually, odd years have been really vicious to the Jets since 2003. 6-10, 4-12, 4-12 are the last 3 records in an odd year. I expect that unless the Jets bring in an excellent coach they will likely have a big off year next year. Probably somewhere between 4-12 and 7-9.
Favre def. is to blame, hes just not the sole reason we collapsed the way we did. Not having enough time in camp is a bs excuse when you're 8-3 and finis 9-7. Now if we started 3-8 then you can say him missing camp was a big reason why we finished poorly. His interceptions were plays that not even HS quarterbacks would make..such as throwing a jump ball to Leon Washington
If Favre doesn't play, I think we can be a playoff team. Atleast we'll have a third place schedule. With the way the team speaks of Favre, I doubt he comes back. Let's trade him to Minnesota.
The problem with this team is that we really don't know what it is. Is it a team build for defense and power running? A more open, varied offense? Until there is an identity and a long-term plan to fulfill that identity, we will flounder. One of the reasons the coordinators we hire never succeed is that they come into a team that has no long-term plan, isn't going anywhere, is just looking for the next guy to figure it out. That's why, in 40 years, we've only had real success under Parcells, one of the very few guys out there who can quickly put together a team and establish an identity out of nothing.
Does anyone remember our horrible pass rush and linebacker play during our losing streak? Favre is not the only part of the team to blame.
This team will rebound if they adress the needs that have to be adressed this off season. There is talent here but there still missing a player or two IMO. Not to mention a coach.
No, if the coaching was better we are still playing. Calling 38 passing plays in a snow/sleet game is a great example.
That's what we should be. I've always thought that if you're a GM, you should say to yourself, "What kind of team would I want if this team were to have home field advantage throughout the playoffs." Playing in New York where it's freezing cold during playoff time, we should have a team that doesn't have to rely on a heavy passing attack. Anyway, cold weather or warm weather, if you can run the ball and play defense, you're going to have success. That's the kind of identity we should have.
It's a bit too early to be forecasting a rebound for this squad in '09. There are too many unanswered questions at this point to commit to such a prediction. With the all important QB and Head Coach situations a crap shoot for next season, it is very difficult to have confidence in a rebound. Throw in a suspect Defense and a mediocre 1st Round Pick and the rebound is looking more like fantasy than reality.
Rebound??? We went 9-7 after going 4-12. The team actually improved dramatically this season over last season. The end of the season was obviously dissapointing and we will have to make some changes but I expect the team to get better next season. A principle reason for my optimism is that I think the OLINE will be even stronger and more solidified as a unit which should mean that we'll have an improved ground game and pass protection. Also on the defense I think we will see major improvements and renewed focus on continuing to build up a defense which greatly improved this past season - we have a long way to go but with a new HC and DC and some smart personnel decisions - we could be a much stronger D oriented team in 2009. So I'm kind of optimistic. We should get a good new HC and a good DC and Tannenbaum and Woody have shown that they are willing to go out and spend the $ to improve the football team.
Word. We get more depth in the trenches, improved play from young players, and linebacker talent and we'll see this team look damn good next year. Basically, more depth. Hopefully young depth with the potential to be a starter.
Lack of depth definitely killed us on defense. The defense was pretty strong early on. Then David Harris gets hurt and we don't really have a legitimate back-up to replace him. Kris Jenkins gets hurt and he has to keep playing because Pouha just is totally ineffective at NT. Then we're forced to bring Ty Law out of retirement again because we don't have enough DBs. Good coaching, average QB play and some defensive depth (basically what we had in the middle of the season) and the Jets should make the playoffs.
I'm with you 100% on this one - with the Rushing game and players we have, why the hell did we keep passing the ball? Was the problem the Coach, QB or both?
I think if we get Rex Ryan and he brings his notorious aggressive 3-4, we will be very good. Hopefully, Favre doesn't come back and either Clemens/Ratliff/Draft will start at QB. If they don't grab a QB (Stafford/Bradford/Sanchez) in the 1st 2 rounds, the Jets should take a Safety (Mays/Moore) in the 1st and trade up into the early 2nd to take Clint Sintim at ILB. It would really sure up our secondary, and get some of the awful players off the field. I only expect the rookies from this year (Keller/Lowery) to get better and become more consistent contributers for the Jets next year. I could see us being a 10-6 or 11-5 team with the right CS and a solid draft.
