There are losing seasons and then there are abysmal seasons! He was only saved in 04 by Brees emerging from nowhere.
Right, Brees just emerged from nowhere in 2004 and his 104 qb rating had nothing to do with the coaching performance of Marty Schottenheimer who BTW won the NFL Coach of the Year Award in 2004.
Well I'm not a huge fan of Marty personally. Love how he gets his guys to the postseason, and he can be a great coach for this franchise. But again, he is up there... been out of the game a few years (which can actually increase a coaches fire) and I don't know to be honest. I wouldnt be upset with the hiring, at least not to the point that i would be if it was his son, Callahan or Sutton. They arent ready IMO. At this point I really want a coach who is too agressive. Rex Ryan comes to mind. the man is firey, he wants to tear apart opposing offenses. he runs the 3-4, maybe we can steal a Bart Scott from Baltimore this offseason, if he follows his DC... Sure we don't know the offensive scheme he would bring... but at least he would be older than the Quarterback. If he thinks truly about the way the ravens played this year, run first pass second. He could do it here, we clearly have the running backs to do so. I vote for Rex, he deserves a shot at HC and it should be here in NY/NJ!
And Brees was horrible in 2003 causing the Chargers to draft a QB in the first round of the 2004 draft which (ended up getting Rivers).
Indeed, because nobody anticipated Brees suddenly transforming into a legit QB. If that was expected they would never have drafted Rivers.
Look at Marty's track record; he is one lucky run through the playoffs to being considered one of the best of all time.
Brees had a lot to do with the abysmal 2003 season. He had a great 2004 season, but Marty had a better 2006 season with Philip Rivers as his QB. I think that say a lot about Marty.
If Byner never fumbles at the goaline. But I actually think all the failure benefits him, because word is he still has the fire and really wants to win a Championship.
I'm not saying he's a bad coach, only that 03 shows his appointment guarantees nothing, especially with any uncertainty at the QB position.
I disagree, Brees was a fantastic college QB at Purdue and was a Heisman finalist twice and was the top QB in the big 10, leading Purdue to big bowl upset win over #4 K State. Like a lot of good QBs coming out of college - it takes a few seasons for them to get good. Lots of examples of that phenomenon - Eli for instance.
How is someone a leading candidate when they haven't even been interviewed?! Who gives a crap we run the same defense. I don't understand the difference or care to between the 3-4 and 4-3. I do know this we got rid of a pretty good d guy because he couldn't adjust to the 3-4 in Vilma.
doesn't excite me, but i could live with it. Just get ready for a very concervative team. GO GET SHANAHAN! Hire a big time defensive coordinator, make Tannenbaum the capologist, and call it a day. After saying goodbye to Favre, of course.
Living out here in Boulder, you don't want Shanahan unless he is only going to coach. He still is great with the offense - his scripted first 15 plays always seem to work - but he was horrible at drafting players for defense or signing defensive free agents.
You have to believe that Marty will eventually make it to the promised land. The playoffs is such a crap shoot.
