I don't care if he's a wizard with the cap, the guy is a frigging accountant. He had training wheels with Bradway sitting in an office across the hall helping him with the FOOTBALL angle of the business, for crying out loud. He's got another set of training wheels with Cohen now. If this guy is what is driving away quality coaches, get rid of him, Woody.
You don't make any sense. Realize what you're saying here. You're criticizing him because because he was an assistant GM to Bradway and now has an assistant GM named Cohen. What does that mean? Lets take a look at the Tannenbaum era: Draft- Rhodes, Leon Washington, Dustin Keller, Nick Mangold, Eric Harris, Revis, Gholston Signings- Faneca, Woody, Pace, Richardson Trades- Jones, Favre I would say he's mostly been solid. I can't think of any crippling draft picks, as Gholston should get at least another year to see what he can do. I can't think of any crippling signings, as he's been very careful not to overpay players who haven't produced. The Favre deal hasn't worked out, but an upgrade over Chad was necessary at the time, even though I've never been the biggest Favre fan. So what people are suggesting is to unjustifiably make this man lose his job just so an overrated coach can run the whole show. Brilliant guys, brilliant.
Well, he's made some solid moves, but Favre and Gholston were disasters. The only hope there is that Favre quits and the the Jets move to the 4-3, where hopefully Gholston starts looking remotely like a football player.
I don't know about the dry cleaning, but George Costanza can definitely pick up the calzones. Yes it's the obligatory Seinfeld reference .
It remains to be seen whether the Gholston pick is a disaster. If he sucks again, in his second year under a new coaching staff, then it can be argued whether he's a bust or not. The Favre/Chad fiasco was bad, but he shouldn't lose his job over that because he's been good besides it. I say it's a fiasco not because we got rid of Chad, who I'm not a big fan of, but because we made no effort to trade him to an NFC team. Upgrading Chad could have been handled a lot better. You know what though, Bill Cowher is a guy who was always satisfied with people like Kordell Stewart as his QB because he DOESN'T THROW THE BALL. Even Big Ben usually would have games where he was like, 12 of 16 for 150 yards. I don't want that crap here.
Tannenbaum is a smart Madden GM at best. His moves have not produced a significant long-term swell in the Jet's talent base to date. The team this year was less talented than the team in 2002 or 2004. His moves to acquire people like Revis have been pennywise and pound foolish. You don't tie up a lot of value at the top of the draft in a defensive back. Defenses just don't work that way. It's questionable whether it's even a wise move to trade up for a defensive lineman, but at least then you are playing the angles correctly.
You really think Cowher deserves that kind of clout? What's different between him and Jon Gruden? He's Jon Gruden with one less team and 7 more years of experience.
I believe Tanny has done a very good job since taking over,..I have one big problem with him, why NOT trading Chad outside the division and picking up a possible draft pick (unless someone here knows the scoop whether he tried or not?).....was Chad's contact the issue??
Tannenbaum is a huge upgrade over Bradway. I never understood your point about Revis. A shutdown cornerback gives a defense a huge advantage over its opponent. How many shutdown cornerbacks are there in the NFL? Giving up a 2nd and a 5th to get this guy was worth it. Perhaps you can prove me wrong with your DB draft value argument, but the way I look at it, CB was a huge need of ours, and Aaron Ross is much more inconsistent than Revis is. So are the other CB's who were taken that year.
The salary cap was the issue. We had one day to clear enough room for Burt's $12 mil. Not enough time to work out a trade for Penny. Had to release him.
Tannenbaum's job is to acquire the right players for the system. Tannenbaum succeeded in getting Mangini every quality free agent available and upgraded the team in a major way. From there it was Mangini's job to go out there and make something of it. This season is a failure by Eric Mangini, not Mike Tannenbaum. Tannenbaum gave Mangini the tools. Mangini didn't use them.
Woody should have gutted every person and hired a guy who would bring in his people. Tanny through Mangini under the bus to save his job. Tanny brought him in and vouched for him.
Don't forget trading for Jenkins - another brilliant move. I think Tannenbaum is an outstanding GM and I would not want to see him go.
I certainly don't see anything special about the guy. Not enough to turn away top coaching candidates. He went out into the market with a checkbook and started signing free agents - no great genius required to spending money. Don't get me wrong, I applaud the free agent dealing last season; I just don't think it took a special talent to do it. The Jets do seem like they have decent personnel guys - Clinkscales and, yes, Bradway still. Those are the guys with the talent evaluation background. I'd credit them for players like Leon, Revis, and Rhodes before I'd ever credit Tannenbaum. I wouldn't remove him for NO reason; but losing a strong coaching candidate is reason, for sure.
