Was the Magini firing a step towards attempting a quick SB run next season?

It sure seems like it to several analysts on ESPN radio. Those analysts are saying that the Jets Owner and GM are adamant about getting Brett Favre to come back for one more season, and will show the commitment to improving that Favre was asking from the packers 3 seasons ago. Apparently, they feel they will try to get a proven, hard nosed, HC in (Cowher is obviously already in talks some, and Parcells could become available), and try to change the culture of the entire team both offensively, and defensively. COuld mean that the new HC would be naturally allowed to bring in his own people for the OC and DC positions. Instill a new system: Maybe a Pitssberg Steelers type offense with Cowher, and revert to a 4-3 defense as we don't have the players to be like the eagles.

Also, they were saying that in their quest to convince favre to return, they would may even go out on a limb to try and get him a deep threat, play making, weapon at WR, (like he had last year in greg jennings. Either via the draft, or a trade).

I am not saying they are obviously going to try and do all of the above strictly to get #4 back: A hard nosed HC may be just what the jets need long haul, and a change of culture is definitely needed across the board. Plus, all the moves that could be made to comvince favre to come back should help the jets regardless of his return.

However, I bet they have already been knocking at #4's door.

the firing was similar to the Randolph firing... you can't hold it together with that talent against those teams, you leave.

I'd have done the same as an owner.

Yeah, but the owner is getting BLASTED, because mangini had two winning seasons in three years.

The owner shouldn't be getting blasted. The football team was 8-3 and ended 9-7. That is inexcusable and someone deserves to lose their job.

    That is all.

Willie Randolph made the NLCS in 2006, then collapsed into shit down the stretch, was given the team again the following year and the team was the same as the JEts - lacked passion and played like girls - you have to get rid of the non-aggressive figureheads. Its not how you win in pro sports, or any sport.

reporters can go fuck themselves- they for the most part are as clueless as most fans, and we get our info from them.... sad.

No no, I agree. Mangini just was not the answer for us, and sure he may work in some other orginization... just not here.

I want a hard nosed, no nonsense coach. Finding the next Mike Singletary, BilL Cowher, Bill Parcels, Bellicheck, or apparently Mike Tomlin.... is pretty hard to do. Obviously, that is why Idealy, it would be a great move to Get Cowher.

Well we do need a hard-nosed HC to come in here. We have not had one of those since Parcells left. Parcells took us to the AFC championship game and had all of us at least thinking about the Super Bowl. We need someone to come in here and take control just like he did. If it means that the new HC brings in their own staff then let them do it. We're not going to settle for this Schottenheimer/Sutton team!

I don't think that this is aimed at a quick Super Bowl run after thinking about it. If they push and push to convince Favre to come back then I may think otherwise. I believe that we have a diamond in the rough with Brett Ratliff. I would be just as excited to see him get his shot at being the starter and becoming our franchise QB.

Dare I say though, do the Jets look at bringing in Matt Cassel if they know that Favre is not coming back and they feel that Ratliff is not ready?

what people dont understand is that as mentioned above...you start 8 - 3 and finish 9 - 7 that is a winning season on paper but a losing season in the eyes of anyone actually watching whats going on...his other winning season his team was demolished in one playoff game...the year after they were horrific...

mangini didn't get it done here...period...

Mangini made some horrible coaching decisions this season. The Seattle game was the nail in his coffin. If Favre does return, it will be to sell more jerseys. Favre was the worst QB in the NFL for the final five games. Imagine him next year at this time?

The team needs to rebuild from scratch and hopefully put together a home grown competitive team in about 2-3 years. Go Chad! Show these amateurs how it's done.

The problem is he was 23-25 overall in 3 seasons.....

They played one of the easiest schedules in the NFL and lost to the Raiders, 49ers, Seahawks 3 teams that won a combined 16 games. They struggled to win games against the 2 win Chiefs and the 4 win Bengals. Throw in the collapse and I think it was a relative easy decision for Woody to make.

He didn't work out much all winter. The year prior the Packers had a trainer with him during the off season. At his age, that would make a huge difference. If he is willing and able to return, I am sure he will be in better shape and his endurance will be better than this year.

I say why the hell not? The point of every season is to try the best you can to win the Super Bowl. Do whatever it takes. If this doesn't work, start over and rebuild around a new QB.

More or less what the Jets have been doing for 40 years. Hire coaches, change QB's and do it again in three years with no championships to show for it.

It is the fervent wish of this Dolphins fan that the Jets do everything in their power to bring back Favre next year. But I am afraid the first thing any "hard-nosed coach" will do is tell #4 he needs to start the clock on his enshrinement at Canton.
