And if he comes in here, gets frustrated with the tough division and constant media pressure, and re-retires after a few seasons leaving us in the middle of yet another rebuild...it's a very different situation.

Who is to say that won't happen to whoever comes here? It's not even a blip on the radar as far as concerns as far as I'm...uhh....concerned.

    149-90 as a head coach.

He had a losing record THREE times in 15 seasons.

The Steelers went to the playoffs 10 out of his 15 seasons there.

In Cowher's first two years, the Oilers were a very good team. The Steelers took over that division in three years, and held on for a while.

Then in the mid-90s, the Steelers had to deal with the expansion Jaguars...who were a very good team.

1998-2000 belonged to the Tennessee Titans...but Cowher and his Steelers bounced back -- winning the division in 2001, 2002, and 2004.

You can't tell us that he's a mediocre coach with a winning percentage barely over .500. He's a damn good coach, and he's proved it...

we just tried that approach. when mangini was hired all i read on this board was give him time let him build something. that approach just doesn't work for many teams in the nfl. the only teams who keep coaches for long periods of time are usually consistent contenders. fans and owners dont like to sit around and watch a guy learn on the job.

who is to say cowher wouldn't be in for the long term? he is still a young guy as far as head coaches go. i dont expect that he would want to be around for 15 years again, but ill take him for 5-7 and hope that he brings in a guy like tomlin that can step in and seamlessly take over where he left off when he decides he is done.

Exactly. People think he's a 2-year deal because he retired after 15 years after winning a SB so he could spend time with his family and relax. After 15 years, isn't that understandable? Not once was he ever disloyal to Pitt, so I don't know where this is coming from.

He's young and may be ready to resume his Coaching career. So what's the problem?

Interesting stats--I recall a couple years where he got off to lousy starts and came roaring back the second half of the season--do you have his DEC record by any chance? I have a feeling its outstanding.

Another thing: Cowher landed Big Ben when the team was already pretty good. We have a good enough team that a rookie QB could flourish on. Teams like Detroit, Cleveland, Oakland, make it very difficult for a franchise QB to come in and immediately succeed.

At this point, I believe you're grasping for straws.

Any coach can leave at any time for any reason, but wildly speculating about the future isn't a reason to disregard a coaching candidate.

The fact that they're holding on to the coaches, tells me they are going to hire someone fast. I don't think they'd let these guys twist in the wind for a long time.
Also, listening to the Tannenbaum interview with Francesa, he said he wants a coach that "transends" the QB, and he would have input as to weather they want Favre back.
The only guy out there that could be is Cower.

I didn't feel like looking up his ENTIRE career in December, but from 2000-2006, Cowher was 26-7 in December.

    ...pretty solid.

While I love the idea of Cowher coaching the Jets and hope it happens, people seem to be overlooking the fact that he hasn't had much success against our greatest rival, the Patriots, particularly when they have been coached by Belicheat. Just an FYI.

That does pretty much say it all. I'd like to see Cowher on the sidelines next year.

I feel like these are the requirements for some people:
    1) Must be under 40.
    2) Cannot have won a superbowl, because they won't have anymore fire.
    3) Must coach team for 30+ years.
    4) Must maintain an .700 or better winning percentage over those 30 years.
    5) Must win superbowl at least 10 times over those 30 years.
    6) Must be aggressive.
    7) Must be able to talk to press with an outgoing personality like Robin Williams.
    8) Must be animated on sideline whenever the camera pans to them.
    9) Does not chew gum.
    10) Losing any conference championships or superbowls will result in docking pay 1 year.
    11) Does not pick nose on sideline (added by recommendation).
