I could see him being utilized like Parker. Parker has broken down a bit, but he's also won the games because he's gotten the rock.
I wonder if he's enjoyed this last year spending his Fall and Winter weekends in NYC. Something to consider. . . .
Funny, he's already publicly said he wasn't interested in listening to anyone else. Now he's interested in "listening" to the Jets? Good possibility this is practically a done deal already, but to downplay it, both parties are saying, "We're going to talk." My guess is, the talking stage is already past us... now they're into the "hammer out a contract phase." Woo-Hoo..... Cowher would be absolutely sick around here. Not more boring press conferences with Belichick sound bytes, that's for sure!
Yep, that pretty much sums up my feelings right there. I'd rather have a long-term, young, hungry guy than a guy who seems like he'd pull a BP and retire in a few years regardless of team outcome. Spagnuolo seems like he could be that guy. I'm willing to scrap the whole thing for a few years if it means building a perennial contender.
Like I said, he's a good coach. But he's turned 9 division championships into only 2 trips to the Super Bowl, and his teams (some of them were great, great teams) have laid some serious eggs in big games. I'm just saying that there's a major disconnect between the Cowher that people are idealizing right now and the Cowher who was essentially unable to win the big game until Super Bowl XL.
"Mr. Johnson, I'll tell you one thing. If you keep Favre, he's not going to throw 22 INTs on my watch... I personally guarantee that."
He eventually DID win it though. And it seems to me the team has been bored to tears as of late so they need a fire under their ass.
Where does everyone get the idea that Cowher would be a 2 year deal? The guy coached the Steelers for 15 years & is still young. Seems to be an extremely loyal guy unlike Parcells and doesn't have the ego of a Parcells. If he does come here I would expect him to the HC for at least the next 5 years if not more.
In a division with the Bengals, Browns, and Oilers/Titans...not exactly the AFC-E. Just over half...wow.
I've been assuming that Cowher is going to be a short term deal because he got bored and quit his last job after winning the Super Bowl. He clearly thought he had nothing more to prove 2 years ago, why should we assume that he's now ready for another 15 year commitment to a much more stressful and less stable franchise?
A plan is definitely already in place - I was thinking Billick or Marty, but it could be Cowher. They made this move so quickly, you gotta believe they've had backroom discussions for a while now with possible coaches.
I think it was more of a matter of being burnt out. These guys put in a TON of hours and he did it for 15 years straight. 2 years off should have been enough time to recharge the battery.
I would be happy with 5 division titles and two Super Bowl appearances over the next ten years. It makes for fun Sundays. Cowher's teams always were competitive. They played tough football on the lines.
The guy wanted a break after 15 years and finally winning the SB & he left that team in great shape. If Cowher comes here wins a SB and leaves us in great shape for future success I won't complain.
The ownership and management team haven't shown that they are capable of finding a coach of the caliber that you want with the youth that you want, or that they can put a coach like that in position to succeed. There's no telling whether Spagnuolo will be successful as a HC, and I'm not sure they'd be able to judge that well enough. I'm sick of 'scrapping the whole thing for a few years'. Fuck that shit. I want to WIN NOW.
