Sounds like a good deal if it happens. I would still keep talking to Ollie as well - as the Yankees have shown, if you have the money you'd better be willing to spend it, and the Mets have the money (as long as Madoff didn't make off with it).

If we get Lowe, I'd still absolutely look at Ollie for the 5th spot. I'd rather not have to worry about a rotating door in the 5th slot this year going in, thankyouverymuch.

If we can even just keep Perez to a "Every time we play Philly" contract, I'd be amped.

I want nothing to do with Perez at this point. He's part of the problem since half of his starts he doesn't show up for and kills the bullpen.

Him alone wouldn't do the trick, him along with Lowe would be solid no matter how inconsistent he is.

I have to imagine they could find better use of the money then giving Perez a big contract.

He's 35 now. With the type of pitcher he is, his consistency, and his delivery though, he's probably as safe a bet as you're going to get at that age. 3 or 4 years is okay by me, especially 3 and an option. I wouldn't be too happy with 5 though.

if the yankees and red sox are out of the derek lowe bidding we could get him for less than 5 years and the $90 mm. why dont we take both lowe and perez?

    santana
    lowe
    perez
    pelfrey
    maine

and have niese, parnell and maybe pedro for injury considerations

Perez has averaged more IP/start the last 2 years then golden boy John Maine. I don't see why everyone is so quick to run him out of town. He's invaluable against the lefty dominated lineups.

I absolutely agree; all things being equal I'd prefer Perez over Lowe. But all things aren't equal; Perez is asking for much more. If he price comes down, maybe we can get both.

Certainly at this point no one views Maine as a golden boy, do they? He is a complete question mark, which is why I have no problem with a 3 years-plu-option deal for Lowe, and would support going after Perez too. Right now the Mets only have two starters that can be viewed as anything like sure things. The Mets need to spend the money they're going to be getting from Citi Field.

I guess it could just be a money thing this time but it seems like people have always been on Perez for being crazy, wild and inconsistent without saying the same things about Maine despite their similar numbers the last 2 years

It isn't even that, Perez can at least pitch innings Maine has turned into a 5 inning pitcher last year. I hope the Mets aren't stupid enough and I fear that they are that they can count on Maine as a given to save on cash.

That's a fear I have too, my feeling is you are moving into a new stadium, money isn't and issue so sign the players you need to sign to be successful. We're not talking about the Royals or Pirates here.

The Randy Wolf thing really confuses me. He has started 30 games once since 03 and is a well below average SP.

I'd love to see Omar grab Lowe and Jon Garland. Garland would be perfect for the 4th or 5th spot in the rotation. He's started at least 32 games every year since 02 and pitches 200 innings every year. He won't light the world on fire, but Garland is as solid and consistent as they come for the back of the rotation. He'll be a 14-10 4.40 guy for the next 5-6 years. 3 years 24 million should get it done with Garland.
