Its really good to see him doing well. I also want to acknowledge that while he is better when there are great players around him, he also makes players around him better.
I think that's true. Either way, it's good to have a long-time, lifer Jet hanging around and being productive.
I have always liked, Ellis. I think he is over rated because he is not a talkative individual who rarely gets talked about. He doesn't command respect through the words from his mouth, he is/has gained respect through his play on the field. Pat yourself on the back Ellis, your a badass.
He's been underrated for good reason. Up until this season from the point when he signed the new contract, he's been playing like crap. It's nice to see that we're finally getting a return on our investment, albeit a few years too late.
my favorite memory of the big cat would be when he was in a shouting match with those grime raiders fans in the black hole before a playoff game.
Funny, I thought this was the "Ellis appreciation thread", not the "make baseless accusations against Ellis" thread.
How is it a "baseless accusation" when his gameplay speaks for itself. I'm commending the guy on his play this year but also making the observation that over the course of the last few years, he's been playing like shit. Spare me from the whole "he had nobody good in the middle so he can slide" argument, as one of the standouts on D last year was Kenyon Coleman, the other end. Please don't let that one photo of Ellis taking down Brady in the mud cloud your vision.
No, he hasn't. Ellis in his 2.25 years at the 3-4 DE position has 118 tackles, 13 sacks, 3 FF, 3 PD, AND he's a team captain. Thats shit? Compare that to most of the 3-4 DEs in the game and he's right with them. One day I hope Jets fans start to appreciate the good players we have while they're playing...
When you start a thread of appreciation on a forum designed for intellectual debate, you are bound to get criticisms as well as appreciation. I really like the way Ellis has played, but I had expected him, realistically or not, to someday become an elite player. He has the physical tools of one, but maybe not the competitive drive. Ellis didn't have the quickness needed to make the 3T transition but he also didn't have the mean streak that successful 3Ts like Sapp and Randle had when they shot the gap, or what Tommy Harris has now. The last number of years, Ellis has lacked much support in the middle and has been double-teamed a lot, but when you have an elite player on that side being doubled, you are very aware of the battle going on there. Ellis would simply get neutralized and taken out of the play. At this level it's hard not to be neutralized with a double-team, but when I saw Ellis with 2 guys on him I knew that there was nothing left of interest and focused elsewhere. He's a very good role-player when he has a supporting cast, there is no denying that. I'm not so sure that's what the FO was expecting when they gave him that contract, though.
Again, stats are great to have and I applaud the way he's playing this year. He's finally playing UP TO his bloated contract that he was lucky enough to land a few years back after Abe turned it down. While stats show one thing, his gameplay over the course of the last few seasons has been lackluster. You can give me stats to show that 50% of some population somewhere considers a swift kick to the nuts is a good thing, but in the end you and I both know it's a bad thing. I'm not saying that Ellis has been crappy throughout his career as I was one of his biggest fans from Season 1, where he did pretty well for himself. You can't count the Herm "Experiment" year against him, as that was just Herm being Herm. There was a noticeable dropoff in his gameplay, due in no small part to the change in scheme but also his ability to adapt and overcome. If he's turned the corner now that's great, as I've been waiting patiently for a while.
In '05 he looked bad...but '05 was like 3 years agos...since the 3-4 switch he's consistently been a good player.
Although its early, this thread is deserving..and this is coming from a poster who has DESTROYED Ellis the last couple years. He has stepped up his game and as he gets more comfortable you wonder where exactly this will take him. Kudos to him...so far.
I love Ellis he's one the originals of this decade and he fuckin pelted seahawks fans with a giant snow block after the team was getting pelted by snowballs after the game, the jets as a team were getting shit on for this on espn today, they didnt say his name but I'm pretty damn positive it was number 92 and it was a big guy, I could be mistaken, but either way Ellis is great and screw what the media says, they were getting disrespected for no reason, its not like the won and fuckin grabbed a twelfth man flag and shit on it, we arent the titans.:steelers:
Ellis should get team MVP just for that. It was by far better than Lendale White stomping the terrible towel.
I would appreciate Ellis more if showed that fire in a game, got a QB pressure just once or made a game altering play.........rather then throwing a freaking snowball or directing anger at some schmuck trying to impress his wife and kids or drunken friends. Yeah baby that is the kind of fire I want out of Jet players, that and sparking that fire lighting a joint. Oh yeah kudo's to Ellis. He can eat a D!ck too...... Mangini for all I care.
Ellis Rulez!!! Fuck the haters. He's having one of his best years this year. Kenyon Coleman OTOH can eat a dick sandwich.
