You guys can bash Mangini all you want. But, that timeout call with 2:06 put the idea if throwing a pass into Jauron's head, and it worked. Dan Dierdoff didn't agree with the timeout call, proving how much of a moron he is. Mangini deserves some credit when credit is due. It is not about style points in the NFL, this is not the BCS. Its about wins and losses right now and they picked up a big win yesterday on the biggest play of the season.
The timeout had to be called by Mangini, cuz when/if we got the ball back on offense, we would have about 6 more seconds, with a Timeout.
it wasn't about putting the idea in Jauron's head. It was about saving those six seconds. Think about it...it would have been 2nd and 5 with 2:00 left if no TO. then the next play takes off 8 seconds and it would have been 3rd and something with 1:52 left using the final TO. But yeah, pass was a possibility since it would have been two minute warning anyways and time would stop regardless of the outcome of the play.
I think it was more about getting them to 3rd down at the 2:00 stoppage rather than 2nd down. In essence there you save probably 30-45 seconds because they have one less play to run after the clock stops for 2:00--assuming you can stop them, which is your best hope at that point. But I agree, the Bills knowing the clock stops regardless may have caused them to try and pass. Not the worst call, but you need a QB who knows what he's doing. The way they were running the ball, I'd have stuck with that until we stopped it at least once. It's not like we didn't know Lynch was coming on 1st down and he still got 5 yards right into our line.
Yeah, I thought it was a very smart timeout myself. You always try to save time before the 2 minute warning by calling timeouts when you are trailing and need to get the ball back for your offense. And yet, every time I see it done, one of the announcers (usually the the color commentator) openly questions the move, only to have it thrown back in his face. One of Mangini's strengths as a coach has always been game/clock management.
Yeah, I posted this idea yesterday, but TBTF (I think) posted a similar thing first. I don't feel like looking for the thread, so I'll just let this one be. I think Mangini did it on purpose. Because he let the clock run down stupidly the play before, and I was wondering why. This way he could tempt them into throwing the ball, so Mangini sent Elam off the corner, and bam.
Yeah, I watched the Tivo when I got home, he did critcize the call. On offense you're only saving 6 seconds by calling the timeout, but on defense you're forcing them to use another down before the 2:00 warning and save a timeout.
You mean to tell me that time out had more to do with that pass attempt than the retarded Buffalo coaching staff did? When you're running the ball successfully the entire game against a team who forgot how to tackle, why would you even dream of throwing a pass in that situation?
If you complete it for a first down you end the game and a good play fake would certainly freeze the defense. You just can't turn it over. Nothing personal, but it's funny to see a user named JoeWalton commenting on coaching blunders.
And that's why it rocks to KEEP your timeouts at the end of the game. All 3 timeouts were stuck in Jauron's head and he was trying to go for the HR swing rather than the base hit(Running with Lynch) and he only struck out.
That's why it makes me absolutely crazy when I see teams burn a timout to save 5 yards on a meaningless play. Take the penalty, timeouts win and lose games. The first thing I noticed when Parcells replaced Kotite was that we always had 3 timeouts coming down to the end of the game, where Kotite had 1 or none.
He should've taken it after the previous play, he let 30 seconds burn off the clock. As it turns out, it's a good thing he's not that smart or Losman would've had time to eviscerate our pass defense again and win the game.
If he did that they could have run the clock down to 2:00 and still have 2nd down. This way they had to run two plays and come back with 2:00 left (or close to it) and be at 3rd down. That saves 30-45 seconds on the back end of the 2:00 warning.
I can give credit where credit is due. I hate Mangini, but I agree with the timeout, and I also agree with going for it on 4 and 2.
I agree it was a smart move leaving just enough time before the two minute warning that might entice the Bills to pass. But my gut tells me it was a Westhoff idea lol.
I agree with both points. Many teams pass right before the 2 minutes -- maybe they thought that theyd fool the jets. They had NO reason to believe that the jets would send a DB. I agreed with the time out there. Making them run third down right after the 2 minute warning made sense for another reason. There was a possiblity that if the jets moved them back on second down -- that the bills would have to pass and then stop the clock on third.
i'm just glad everything turned out the way it did. if the Bills went 3 and out and punted, we might not even had won the game.
