The 4th and 2 call: why didn't we attempt a FG?

Was Mangini asked this during the press conference? Did the announcers give any clue as to what Mangini could have been thinking there (they had the Dolphins - Niners audio turned on for some reason at the sports bar)?

A FG puts us up 7 there. The ball was at about the 20, so it would have been a 37 yarder.

I liked the call. Get 2 yards and you win the game. Miss it, and they have to go a long way to win.

Miss the field goal, they have better field position and momentum.

Make the field goal, still have to kickoff and their Special Teams was amazing today.

    Mangini made the right move.

He didn't want to risk the kickoff with Gholston deactivated.

With TJ or Leon carrying I think it's worth the risk. We gave them bad field position and no opportunity for their STs to make a play. I thought it was a good call.

At the time, I agreed, but McKelvin could've beaten our ST today with ease.

If we get the 1st, the game is over. The play just didn't work out.

The decision to go for it wasn't a bad one, the play call was however pretty predictable.

Of all the shitty calls the coaching staff made this is the one you make a thread about?

It was the right decision, but stupid play call. Why not throw for the 1st? The clock stops either way if you don't make the first, so I see no reason to run when the D is already stacking the box. Absolutely stupid call. On top of it, Mangini's expression seemed like he didn't know it was coming. I just can't imagine Brett changing the play at the line.

Bingo. Only thing i hated was the play call. I thought they should've done a lil' trickery like on their 1st series. A run up the gut is too predictable

I thought they should have kicked. I agree the play call was poor once they decided to go for it.

Yes, I am. Was there a more dubious coaching decision that also almost cost us the game?

If Rhodes doesn't intercept the pass and James Hardy, Roscoe Parrish or some other Buffalo scrub receiver hauls it in and we lose, would you still be defending the decision?

I liked the call I guess. We should have picked the first down up. Our offense seems to lose steam as the game goes on.

A play-action pass in that situation would have been an excellent call IMHO. Another run up the middle on fourth and two is just so unimaginative.

    LOL. That's great.

Good call. A missed FG would have killed us momentum wise. A couple weeks ago I would of felt extremely confident we would get those 2 yards. We look bad in short yardage situations lately. That Jackson TD run was the equivalent to a bitch slap in football. Absolutely embarassed the defense. We should be running the ball down peoples' throats like that with our 4 number 1 picks on our o-line.

I would have kicked the FG. With a 4 point lead, you need to go up by 7. If you don't have confidence in your kicker hitting a 42 yard FG, then you need a new kicker. If you are afraid of the kick return, squib it. The 4th down play lost two yards, which means the difference between that and a missed FG is 5 measly yards. I'll gamble the five yards for the 7 point lead. Plus the FG and kickoff knock another 10-12 seconds off the clock.

a hail mary that never came close to anyone besides kerry rhodes is far from almost costing us the game. other decisions throughout the game had a much greater chance of costing us the game. like passing 3 straight times from our goal line, that could have hurt us a lot more.

at the point of the fourth down they needed to drive the entire field with no timeouts and like 1:15 or so left on the clock. the passing attack wasn't exactly lighting us up throughout the game. losman had like 22 completions for like 115 yards at one point. forcing them to beat us through the air with time running out was a good decision, and stopped the possibility of a missed field goal giving them less field to cover.

I still would have kicked the FG. trust your team. our ST is one of the best in the NFL. our defense still would have been needed since we didnt convert.

So I would have kicked it. take the security blanket. Your defense has been sucking balls most of the day. So take the 7 point lead put in your back pocket. worst case, you are facing OT, best case exact same scenario ensues.

Worst case with nothing to lose Buffalo goes for two after scoring on a run back and runs over our D for 2. Make them drive the field with little time or ice it with the first down. You don't want to kick off to them up 1 score.

I'm generally not critical of coaching decisions, but I did not agree with that call at all. Feely has been reliable all season, take the points.
