Auburn fails hardcore. Tommy Tub got the last laugh. Gene should have come back home, at least he was loved here.
I think they had to pay Tuberville $5 million to get rid of him. All this money and all the pain of getting a new coach and they get a guy who has 4 wins against Div 1 schools in the last two years. People always talk about wanting class and character, then they fire classy guys like Tuberville. History shows its not easy for Auburn to stay out of trouble, even if the coach is clean he has the alumni to watch out for. Big mistake all around by Auburn.
Yeah. Completely ridiculous hire. I am seriously shocked about it. Tiger fans all over the fanboards are throwing a bitch fit. It's going to be fun beating them consistently for a few years.
He DID run their undefeated Defense back in 2004. I'm not saying I think it's a good hire, Tommy never should have been fired, but he has had some SEC success. I hope he does well, but it seems like he's destined to fail.
Chizik has absolutely no talent at Iowa State - he should have never taken that job. I don't know how much success he'll have at Auburn, but he'll definitely have a better team... The thread title is BS - Chizik isn't a "nobody" -- he's been successful DC with a lot of different teams for a long time in college football.
I'm not saying he should have won a Big 12 Championship but come on they lost to UNLV. I witnessed it with my own eyes. No offense to my alma mater but when UNLV has better talent than you that isn't saying much about Chizik. Throw in that our starting QB was a 5th string sophmore walk on. He had 2 recruiting classes and they were worse this year than last year. They didn't even win a game in the Big 12 and when you consider they didn't even play Oklahoma, Texas or Tech that's pretty pathetic.
There really is nothing in Iowa State, taking a job that has little recruiting talent and what little talent it has going to Iowa, those type of jobs are always doomed to failure, same thing happened in Washington and those teams combined for 2 wins this year. And it is even worse when the job is away from where he coached from so he has no contacts to help with recruiting Personally considering that he has been a successful coordinator there he should do well especially if he goes away from the disaster experiment of the spread offense.
I don't buy it...... Kirk Ferentz has done agood job at Iowa. Look at the way Frank Beamer built VaTech.... Granted small conference but who wants to go to Buffalo? How did Bill Snyder do at KState? He took the worst major college program in history and took them within a quarter of playing for a national title. Iowa State was always respectable never awful and they did have some decent players in recent memory, Troy Davis, Seneca Wallace.
All Iowa State has shown was that at its best it is just about average, other than 2000 they haven't had a solid record since the 70s, Ferentz just continued what Hayden Fry built. Ironically enough Snyder was also in Fry's coaching tree. But you have just listed the exceptions and not the rule. There aren't many coaches period that can take a program from absolutely nothing with little recruiting hotspots around it and build it up to a consistent power. Those coaches are hall of famers for a reason however you don't need that kind of coach to win at Auburn although I'd admit that it would be a plus.
I just don't think you run a top 10 coach like Tuberville who had one down year out of town and bring in a guy on a 10 game losing streak. Now if they had hired a young up and comer like Brady Hoke or Turner Gill or Kyle Whittingham that's a different story. The point I am making is that you don't win in the SEC by hiring guys who haven't shown the ability to win. IMO in terms of coaching in the SEC West alone I'd have Ole Miss, LSU Arkansas and Alabama ahead of Auburn in the coaching department. That just isn't going to cut it. I may be wring but just basing it on his resume Chizik isn't a good head coach.
All I am saying is that it is tough to base whether Chizik is a good coach or not based on his performance in the purgatory of Ames, IA has unlike the NFL record isn't the only thing you can consider in assessing the quality of coach as there are other variables involved. However, I will completely agree that it was a horrible decision running Tuberville out of town when he has been greatly successful there. It reminds me of when Nebraska fired Solich off a 9-3 season where they still haven't gone back to that level of play ever since. There really isn't going to be anyone no matter who it is that will bring Auburn to a level above where Tuberville brought them.
That's what I'm saying.... the guy may turn out to be a good coach but basing it on what he did at ISU you have to have doubts. I understand there are challenges that he faced at Iowa State he won't at Auburn but I don't understand the move by Auburn. As far as Tuberville he had them in position to play for a national title if the system wasn't seriously flawed. You can't ask for more than that. Exellent point about Solich too, unfortunately for him he was the guy that followed a legend.

You can't compare Virginia Tech to to Iowa State... Virginia is a much better overall state in terms of recruiting talent than Iowa. Iowa had some history before the Ferentz era, it wasn't a doormat program. The McCarney era was OK but overall Iowa State's football tradition is very weak. I will say that it's a bit of a concern that Iowa State's recruiting classes got worse once Chizik got there... maybe McCarney knew how to lure some of the in-state talent away from Ferentz, I'm not sure. I think Turner Gill would've been a great hire, but I'm not ready to dismiss Chizik as a bust of a hire. He has some history in Auburn so at least he has something going for him.
Maybe I can't compare the talent in Iowa to that in Virginia but VaTech was about as bad as you can possibly be before Beamer got there. You definately can compare Iowa St and Kansas State though or even Kansas. These were arguably 2 of the worst teams in college football history and they have found a way to turn things around. There are cases all around the game where good coaches have built very good programs out of teams with awful history. McCarthy at Colorado is another guy that comes to mind. I just believe that a good coach can win anywhere regradless of history or tradition. In a state where the only thing that matters is if you win the Iron Bowl you can't think Auburn has increased their chances of winning that game too often with this hire.
