Here are some of his games this year. Game 1 1 reception 5 yards, 3 Receptions 72 yards, 4 for 51, 3 for 40, 1 for 14, 5 for 38, 2 for 2 and 1 for 5. It hasn't just been the last 2 weeks. The guy has been a warrior but he has had multiple concussions and just can't perform at a high level anymore. When Shanahan said he had no fear of the Jets WR it was based on tape. Coles is a shadow of what he was. It was a mistake to guarantee him 2 years after the pounding he took the last couple of years. Coles is a situational player at this point. I agree Ginn would hardly hit the field but that's because of our coaching staff. Stuckey should be starting right now for us.
From the SD game through the Tennessee game he was very productive in all but 1 game(SL and we didn't throw much in that game). The guy has fallen off the face of the earth the last 2 weeks along w/ Cotchery. 2 players of that caliber don't just all of a sudden suck. He has had concussion problems for years yet it didn't stop him from catching 12 balls at NE and Tennessee.
Classic sign of a player in decline especially due to concussions, inconsistency and a lack of focus. Exactly what happened to Chrebet. A couple of good games followed by dissapearing. Cotch has been getting more attention which is why Coles basically with less pressure has had opportunities and has only flashed it once or twice. Old talented NFL players who are hanging on always have good days and bad days. Favre is another perfect example except unlike Coles he hasn't had the concussion history. Just like Favre has padded his stats in a couple of big games so has Coles. Except in this case you are defending Pennington so you need to make Coles out to be superman and Favre out to be a stat pader to make your argument on Pennington.
Oh so he's good from game 3 through game 11 and played 2 really good games in games 10 and 11 but in games 12 and 13 he showed those classic signs of a player declining due to concussions? How many concussions has Cotch had?
Coles has been bad in 8 games, he has padded his stats in 2 games just like Favre. Cotch was hurt in the Oakland game with a shoulder injury and has been on the injury report every week since. That coupled with him being doubled because Coles is no longer feared maybe what has reduced his effectiveness? Hard to tell because with Mangini you don't know if he seperated his shoulder or what. He has missed significant practices every since and has been listed as questionable every week. I'm not making excusses for Cotch who is a very good possesion WR but has never been asked to be a number 1 guy while hurting. The fact that Shanahan and Singeltary both think our WR's aren't a threat and made it public as did Simms seems to back up the fact that you are the one over rating our current recievers. I wonder why? Cakes had it about right in his post but you couldn't even admit that. You cherry pick on Favre's padded stats but not on Coles. Admit it you have an agenda against Favre based on a broken heart.
The reading comprehension levels on this board are frightening. Please show me where I said Coles has had a great season? I said Coles is still a very good WR and he has been good most of the year, he is TIED to his QB. So the QB struggling hurts the WRs, Coles & Cotch don't gte bad overnight after playing so well against NE and Ten. Please read my posts slower and let the information absorb into your system before replying w/ your interpretation of what I wrote.
Coles cought 5 passes for 38 yards against the Pats are you kidding? Favre is over the hill but like a veteran player who is over the hill with outragous talent he still has big games and games that aren't so good. Not every over the hill past his prime player falls off the cliff but many do. Coles because of concussions is beyond where Favre is, he is moody, inconsistent and looks old and completely washed up at times. Other times he looks good that's not untypical of guys on the down side. Coles probably shouldn't be medically cleared to play based on his concussion history. We had this same argument about Chrebet who should have been cut rather than put him at risk his last two years. Coles is clearly at that point. There are times looking at him on the sidelines that he looks like a former athlete in his 40's.
5 passes isn't a good game? If he caught 5 a game it would be 80 for the season, that's not good? and he had one of the biggest plays of the game in OT.
5 catches for 38 yards is a crappy game for NFL starters. Favre is a very mediocre 12th in the league in yards. Coles ranks 40th in the league among WR in yards. He isn't getting seperation it's that simple.
Coles is nowhere near the WR he once was, he once was a great WR but unfortunately he is no longer even a decent starting WR. He is holding the offense back as well as Cotchery who has proven he cannot be a #1 WR in this league. A quality #2 or #3 with a good WR next to him but certainly not a #1. The WRs are not nearly as good as a lot of us(me) thought thy were heading into the season.
How did he get seperation w/ Chad as his QB? Just 3 weeks ago he had 7 recs for almost 100 yds and a TD. The man can still play. Coles & Cotch had 2 recs for 15 yds last week against a banged up SF secondary minus their best Corner. These guys didn't all of a sudden hit a wall, the QB is not getting them the football.
You're talking about 2 years ago when he was one of the worst in average yards per catch in the league. He hasn't been the same since Zach Thomas rang his bell in Miami in 06. He was hurt and did nothing last year and has done very little this year. In 06 we also used to run a ton of short drag routes to clear room for the WR. Chad also threw a ton of INT's in 06 and 07 partially because his WR couldn't get seperation and he had to fit balls into spots he just didn't have the arm for. Favre has been putting the ball into tighter and tighter spaces with both Coles and Cotchery. Once we went to a vanilla O which doesn't have all the drag routes and our WR have to do it on their own they have been totally expossed. If Keller hadn't come on as of late we would be in even worse shape. Look for both Clowney and Stuckey to get a lot more playing time to lossen things up. The wrap on Cloney is he can't get off the line against the bump and run but since there is very little tape on him, I suspect they will try and go over the top quickly. The last time Coles had a big playoff game with Chad was in 02 against Indy.
This is such BS. Did you even watch the game? Did you see that pass to Cotchery along the sideline in the first half? When I saw it live, I thought Favre made a bad throw too, he overthrows Cotchery. But then they showed replays with two cameras, one following Cotchery, one following Favre. Just as Favre is about to throw -- just before he's about tho get run over by the 49er rush -- just as Favre has already gone into his throwing motion, you see Cotchery looking back, see that Favre is about to get hit, so ... he SLOWS DOWN. HE QUITS ON THE PLAY. Then a half second later he sees Favre did get the ball out, and he starts running again. But, surprise surprise, the ball goes 3-4 yards over his head. Gee, I wonder why Cotchery wasn't where Favre threw the ball to? How stupid of Favre to throw it that far, he should have thrown it shorter, counting on Cotchery to slow down as he released the ball, so he would catch it instead of a 49er defender, who would have almost certainly gotten an INT if Favre had thrown there and COtchery had NOT slowed down If I am a moron (if that is what you are about to tell me) then Phil Simms is too I guess, because he commented on the same thing. And don't even get me started on how Coles has already quit on the game at the start of the 4th quarter the last two weeks. The most silly thing about you saying "These guys didn't all of a sudden hit a wall, the QB is not getting them the football" is that you can turn the table and say the same thing about Favre. This is the QB that tled the #2 passing offense in the NFL last year You at like it was the Jets that had such a hot passing offense last year, and now it's suddenly in the tank this year because of the change to Favre. When the obvious reality to anyone who can get over their agenda long enough to be objective, is that the player who had the hot passing game last year with a different cast is Favre, not the Jets WR. Brett Favre threw for OVER FOUR THOUSAND YARDS last year. Behind an offensive line that was not as good as this one, with a running game that for over half the year was not as good as this one, meaning opposing D's were playing the pass all the time. Some how this super sucky QB managed to, over and over gain, get long ball after long ball to some super sucky Green Bay WR that we are to believe cannot hold a candle to the great Coles and Cotchery.
I guess you could argue that coles is on the decline. Especially after last weeks loss. He didn't look over the hill when he made a one handed catch for a TD against the cheifs that gave favre his magical one comeback this season. But at other times he has. However, to say cotch is no good either? Thats just BS. We sucked dung last year but cotch had a thousand yards. I guess he forgot how to get open this year? The truth is we have a QB that cant make the throw beyond 10 yards. And a coaching staff that didn't want him to try and make these throws. There is a loss of conifdence somwhere. I dont think its in the recievers. Either the coaching staff lost confidence in our QB to throw deep, or our recievers have gone under ground on their QB. By underground, I mean coles and cotch dont like our QB and/or lost confidence in him. If you miss a WR badly on deep throws to often, the WRs will lose confidence in their QB - on any NFL team. or Maybe he throws to keller to much and they are "TO'ing" against him - I dont know. But they dont seem like they are thriving with this offense. This late in the season there is a lack of chemistry in our passing game that goes beyond the talent of our recieving core.
Didn't know this thread was still going. I call you pathetic because u turn every thread into a favre vs chad thread. I call you pathetic because u act like u have all this football knowledge because you can read stats off web sites. I stopped trying to debate with you a long time ago because your ignorance and your man love for a player no longer on our roster is infuriating. I could understand if we had won a sb with him, hell even went to one then I think most would be upset about chads departure. The fact of the matter is he was an inconsistant qb who was incapable of getting us to the show. Time to move on.
Lol he can't make a throw past 10 yards or our recievers are not getting open beyond that? I forgot favre has a noodle arm, my bad.
That pass to Cotchery was one instance and Cotchery readily admitted he made a mistake of cutting the route short when he thought Favre had already thrown the ball. When asked about receivers getting open he said that was definitely not the issue. This isn't last year. The guy got knocked around a LOT earlier in the season and hurt his shoulder in Arizona. He's also a year older in a system he's not as comfortable in. I don't think anyone's saying Green Bay's WRs are bad; clearly they're not. The fact that Coles and Cotchery have played well their whole careers isn't even the issue. If you have been watching the games, there's no way you can honestly say Favre hasn't botched a lot of passes, especially downfield. Just because Favre is a great quarterback who had a great season last year doesn't mean he shouldn't be held accountable.
You got it right in the off season surprising you see it differently now after another concussion and a deep thigh bruise during this season.
