For this mock I am assuming that we get a 2nd round pick for Vilma from the Saints after they resign him, we lose our 2nd rounder for Favre, and get a 4th from the Pete Kendall trade. Also I think we should cut Kenyon Coleman who will get $3 mil a year for the 09 and '10 seasons if he stays on the team. Free Agent Signings 1) Brian Dawkins, FS Dawkins would probably like to end his career as an Eagle, but first and foremost he would like to end his career with a SB ring. The Eagles are beneath the Giants and Cowboys in the NFC East and will only have a shot at a wild card until Dawkins retires. However, I believe we are the best team in our division and will still be when Brady gets back to the Pats as long as we still have Favre. Dawkins is a 2-3 year stop gap FS who, while he is no longer in his prime, is still playing at a high level. Bringing in Dawkins shows a commitment to winning now and I think this will also keep Favre around. He gets Coleman's money. 2) Chris Canty, DE We add a great young 3-4 DE to play opposite Ellis. He is going to garner a big contract but he will be worth every penny. Starter for the next 7 years or so. Draft 1) Darius Heyward-Bay, WR I have narrowed this pick down to a LB or a WR. Heyward-Bay is just too good of a talent to pass on - he has great hands with a big frame 6'2, 205 lbs and has a shot to run a high 4.2 40 yard dash. We need a playmaking WR that can go deep and stretch the field and we need one now for Brett Favre. Even if Favre leaves it is very rare to have a shot at drafting a WR with this kind of skill set and potential. He would come in as a #3 guy learning behind Coles and Cotchery and take over as a #1/#2 when Coles leaves after next season. I'm a big fan of Arrelious Benn who will be a 2010 1st rounder but I doubt we can get him and like I said, we need that playmaking WR now. 2) Trevard Lindley, CB This kid is going to be a lockdown CB in the NFL. He is 6' tall and runs a sub 4.4 40 and is one of the, if not THE, best man-to-man CB in college. He has started every game since his freshman year and will likely leave early as he has nothing left to prove. Revis + Lindley = shutdown tandem, and Lowery is a great nickel CB. 3) Fenuki Tupou, RG/RT Depth and a potential starter at either spot on the right side of the offensive line. Tupou can play RT and RG but I see his future in the NFL as a Right Guard where he would be an upgrade over Brandon Moore, but will be able to play spot duty at RT well if Woody gets hurt. One year of coaching, then starting for the next decade. Monstrous run-blocker with a great attitude. 4) Worrell Williams, ILB 6'2, 250 lbs, 4.65 40 yard dash. Williams already plays ILB in a 3-4 defense at Cal and he can come in and compete right away at a spot. Most importantly, he is very good in pass coverage. Probably going to end up as great depth, but we sure could use it anyway. 5)Rhett Bomar, QB Bomar led the Sooners to a National Championship as a freshman and was then dismissed for receiving benefits from a car dealership he worked at. I don't think he is as much (or really any) trouble as he is made out to be. Bomar has all of the tools of an NFL quarterback and can benefit with a year under Favre and some years of NFL coaching. He can compete with Kellen and Ratliff for a backup spot and then compete for the starting job in the future. He has a big arm and is surprisingly mobile. I think if he never left Oklahoma you would hear him being mentioned as a Tim Tebow kind of athlete while being a much better passer. It is definitely worth the risk in the 5th round. 6) David Bruton, S Bruton, ND's team captain, is a versatile safety that has the size, speed, coverage, and tackling ability to make an impact at either SS or FS. He has had very good production during his years at Notre Dame and his measurables are worth salivating over: 6'2, 212 lbs, and has run a sub 4.4 40 yard dash. He can be groomed under Dawkins and has the talent to eventually replace him with coaching, and will be an immediate special teams ace. He can make one hell of a gunner from day one. Charlie Weis has described him as "a freak of nature." I like that. 7) Kellen Heard, NT 6'6, 350 lbs. This guy is a HUGE run-stuffer in the middle of any defense. He has crap production but the physical tools are there. He has time to improve with coaching and seasoning and he will benefit from learning behind Jenkins. Great depth at a crucial position. Early 2010 draft (assuming Gholston works out) 1) Rolando McClain, ILB 6'4, 260 lbs, 4.6 40 yard dash. Monster at ILB and will team with Harris for a scary tandem. 2) Carlos Dunlap, DE 6'6, 290 lbs, 4.7 40 yard dash. Mario Williams-like, just not as good production. Will learn behind Ellis and then team with Canty as a great pair of DEs. 3) LeGarrette Blount, RB Great power RB and great compliment to Leon. Has good hands too. 4) Trent Williams, RT One of my favorite RTs in college, will be a great NFL RT. 5) Terrell Hudgins, WR Watch out for this WR from Elon. Big (6'3, 235 lbs). Averages nearly 11 receptions and 134 lbs per game. Good speed (great for his size) at a 4.5 40. 6) Mickey Shuler, TE Primarily a blocking TE but he has good hands and can be used in the passing game. Very good blocker. 7) Rashawn Jackson, FB "One of the top blockers in the 2010 class, Rashawn Jackson is good at getting tough yards and catching the ball out of the backfield." Sounds good to me. 2011 1st round target: Stud S if Bruton does not work out or stud OLB if Gholston does not work out. Either way S and OLB should be 1-2 in some order. S targets include Eric Berry, Morgan Burnett, and Will Hill. OLB targets include Everson Griffen, Aaron Maybin, Martez Wilson.
He?s a excepional runstopper, and 3 million is pretty cheap for a solid starter. Cutting him doesn?t make sense at all. I?d still love to get Canty, but I doubt the Boys will let him go, Ellis/Coleman/Canty would make a nice rotation and keep those guys fresh for 4 quaters.
I like the 2010 draft, but in the 2009 draft, Rhett Bomar will be gone - he's most scouts number one rated senior QB. I'm not really a fan of Bey either. He's a DeSean Jackson type - all speed, and no possession ability. We need someone with both.
How the fuck are we getting a 4th for DRob? Did you check the deal that was made??? The Jets are getting shit for him - that means no draft pick. He's not playing enough snaps.
I saw that too, but he'll try to come back with some BS argument that the Broncos owe it to us or something like that...
He won?t care what you gotta say, don?t argue with him. Last time, ppl told him, he came up with this:
Yeah Kenyon has been playing well this year i wouldnt mind having another guy to bring in for a rotation but no one to actually replace him.
Anything is possible...in the Madden world that The GM lives in. He'll be getting off the school bus in a few hours - let's see what he has to say.
How do you guys feel about CB Victor "Macho" Harris from VT? He should be a late first day pick and i've watched him for 4 years and he's a player. i'm just not very good at projecting what players will be good in the NFL or what players fit our system
I meant Pete Kendall, not Dewayne Robertson for the draft pick - otherwise I'd have us with two 4th rounders. Just put down the wrong name.
Dunlap could fall imo to at least bottom 1st round but if not, I would be willing to to trade our 2011 1st and 2010 2nd to get him. Also, if only one declares then that player would be our 1st round pick in 2010 and the other in 2011. We might not even need an ILB because Worrell Williams is actually very good. He is an underrated player that has played the 3-4 ILB in college and he might be able to come in and make an impact right away. Same goes for the S position with David Bruton. Those are two guys I really like a lot. Rhomar won't go earlier than the 5th round. Whatever team takes him knows that they are taking on a major project - he just has a ton of upside. He has his character concerns but I don't think they are anything worth not drafting him for, and then he has been playing with Favre-like numbers against crappy production (TDs and INTs close in ratio). Many teams will probably not even have him on their draft board. He has all the tools however and I think given a few years of coaching (a la Rodgers) he could be quite good. Rusty Smith from FAU is a QB I really like in the mid-rounds for the 2010 draft if we don't take a QB in April. He is a big guy 6'6 250 I think, has decent mobility and a huge arm. His coach, who coached Vinny Testaverde, says he is the best QB he has ever been around. He leads long scoring drives like it's his job. As for DHB, he has a ton of potential and has not been able to unleash it at Maryland. At that point in the 1st round I think we'll be down to DHB, Tyson Jackson, and Brandon Spikes. Spikes is a beast but I think he is really just a 4-3 LBer and Jackson doesn't get to the QB at all. DHB is the rare big guy with great hands and great speed. He has to fix his route running a little bit but he can become a Randy Moss type of talent. He took over the Wake Forest game and they have a great defense (Boo Robinson, Aaron Curry, Alphonso Smith, Chip Vaughn). When else in the draft are we going to have a shot at a WR of his skill set? And you can call me a "Madden GM" but at least have reason for it - I made one cut to free up $$ for Brian Dawkins. I'd rather have Dawkins than Coleman. Had I said last year we would have traded for Kris Jenkins and Brett Favre, signed Alan Faneca, Damien Woody, Calvin Pace, Tony Richardson, and Bubba Franks you would have laughed your heads off at me and called me all sorts of shit....but wait...
Lol....dude Carlos Dunlap is not lasting until 'til the late first next year...he's got Mario Williams size and sickness while playing for a top SEC team....the likeliness of him lasting 'til the late first next year is almost nil...and I'm more than willing to lock that even like 18 months before that draft.
Anything can happen in the course of a year - that's a ridiculous statement. He has good production this year and great measurables but who knows if he'll have good production next year. Middleton was supposed to be a lock for a 1st this year and now look at him - he had crap production and if he came out early he'd be a 3rd rounder probably, late 2nd round tops. Same for Maurice Evans. Hunter Caldwell was a lock for the 1st round in the 2009 draft from last year too. A lot can happen in a year. Even if he has cemented his stock as a 1st round pick by the 2010 draft then I would give up 1st in 2011 to get him and McClain. They are two perfect players for our system. Like I said, we might not need McClain though because of Worrell Williams.
That would ideally be the plan obviously. The only hole we would potentially have left is QB, but I think one of Clemens, Ratliff, and Bomar would emerge as a good starter for us in that battle. We'd be set at RB, WR, TE, O-line, D-line, LB, CB, and S. And if we need a new K/P we can always pick one up in UDFA after a draft or regular Free Agency.
I actually like Dawkins signing a lot. He brings experience and a true leader to our secondary. Great cover guy and he can lay the wood. For a stop guy S you can't get better than him and we are not going to be able to draft Mays/Moore who I think are the only safeties worth drafting early. What is wrong with Dawkins?
first of all he is old, second of all he is not "Brian Dawkins" he is old Brian Dawkins, also the fact that they brought in Quinten Demps suggest that if the Eagles dont want him he probably is not worth going back to. Also this season he has been banged up a bit. Also he is going to ask for a shit load of money. I really dont see how Rhodes is not a true leader of the secondary. If Dawkins was 3 or 4 years younger I would give him a shot but for someone who is going to want at least 3 years with a load of money seems like a waste. We need to get younger. We still have a bunch of very very key position where the age factor starts to come in continually signing high priced veterans will not solve the issue
