The Saints will not give contract-year MLB Jonathan Vilma an extension before the season ends, according to NFL.com's Adam Schefter.

Had they done so, the draft choice the Jets got for Vilma would upgrade from a fourth- to a second-round pick. That and Vilma's mediocre play made the decision easy for the Saints. Vilma ranks sixth in the NFL with 104 tackles (76 solo), but hasn't made a big difference for New Orleans' rush defense.

i wouldn't mind getting him back to help in pass coverage. he seems to be healthy and Jenkins would do wonders for him imo

This, to me, is a shocker. He was highly touted after the draft, played well for the Jets in his first few seasons, and then... What?

    I don't get it.

Why should we care if he is resigned before the season ends? When does any player get resigned with 3 weeks left in the season. Not really sure what the point of this thread or report is about.

I believe he is worried about whether they will sign him at all or not, as am I. Big difference in our draft outcome.

Yeah, I'm not sure about the contract stipulations, but I doubt Tanny agreed that Vilma had to be re-signed before the regular season ended. Just before he becomes a FA.

    Thread fails.

    Maybe this will enlighten you:
If he had been resigned, then we would get a higher draft pick - possibly the second rounder we'd lose to the Packers for Favre if we make the playoffs. That was the point of this thread.

I guarantee there is no stipulation in the contract that says he has to sign before the end of the season. If this report said "Saints have no plans to resign Vilma" then it would be valid. Right now though, not valid.

I would be surprised if Vilma is not resigned, he is having a pretty good year. If he isn't though I would love to snatch him back up, he is just the type of LB this team is lacking and we would still get a pick for him.

The way our 4th round usually goes...i think i'd rather have the 4th round pick then the 2nd rounder. Sounds dumb....but i'm just going with the trends.

We already got the 4th round pick this past draft. Esentially, the Saints have already paid us for Vilma's services this year.

If they re-sign him to a new contract, then we give back the 4th and get a 2nd.

Help me out with this one? How can you be ranked sixth in the NFL with tackles but call that a "mediocre play"?

Vilma aint coming back to the 3-4 and we should not want him back in the 3-4. He does not fit.

I believe the Jets already got the 4th last year. If I'm not mistaken if they resign him, we get their 2nd, and have to give them our 4th.

Don't know what happens if he is franchised, then signed.

The real worm in the bucket is the deal they have with the Giants for Shockey. They already gave the Giants their 2nd.

    Very confusing stuff

the bottom line is....the Saints will do anything to make sure we don't get their 2nd round pick....at least, that's the vibe i'm getting.

A lot of his tackles are like all the tackles he had with the Jets. Very few impact tackles at the line of scrimmage where he stands a RB up for no gain.

Most of them are using his speed to run guys down up field after big gains.

I'm afraid you are probably right. We won't get anything more then the 4th we already got.

What I would give to have him back, I think now that more parts are in place he would do really well, and definately be a coverage linebacker

Last year the Saints were 26th in overall D.

    They are currently 21st.

There is something else going on here.
