And if he gets hurt? Production plummets? He would go from a guaranteed $20-25 million contract to $5-10 million if he hits a cold streak. That is why players demand long contracts with guaranteed years, protect themselves.
Teix is apperently all but a Red Sox, at this point. I'm ecstatic about that, but hope the Sox can add another starter or 2, get a catcher(Rangers C seem to be out of the question now, unfortunetly) and dump Lugo on someone.
Well, he is insisting on a full no-trade clause and Boston has never given a no-trade clause since Epstein has been there. They say they don't give them to anybody period. How do you explain that dichotomy? http://www.sportsline.com/mcc/blogs/entry/6270335/12218102 Seems the Yankees are also in on this one too.
They will probly go with the same no trade they gave Schilling, a hand shake and a promise. And they never once concidered breaking it.
Where is your source on that? From what I've read tonight, the Nationals offered him 8 or 9 years, and I think close to $200 million.
The only part of the deal for Sabathia i question is the opt out, it was obvious Sabathia wasn't thrilled about NY, but leaving 3 mil a year over a 6 year deal is a lot different than leaving a 7th year at 23 mil and that ridiculous opt out. So essentially if he underperforms or gets hurt he is guaranteed his 161 million, but if he dominates or just pitches very well he opts out in 3 years and picks up another long term deal with an even higher PYA. Its brilliant negotiating by his agent seeing that he is the only ace likely to hit the market in the next few years and that the yankees were desperate.
CC wanted the opt-out in any contract he signed, no matter with who. It wasn't just a Yankee thing, it was a comfort thing. If he isn't happy where he is, he can leave.
The Dodgers in response are discussing increasing their offer too 3 years. The Angels are concidering a 2 year offer. hahaha
http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-spw-angels11-2008dec11,0,7003005.story 8 160, it was misprinted on MLB.com originally as 8 for 180 then corrected
its one thing when you overpay a bonafide ace, another when you overpay a mediocre much older pitcher with injury question marks.
LOL  The Yankees are serious about breaking the bank this year. Hey why not give Pudge another 5 years at 100 million why your at it...... I'm going to love watching the Yankee fans squirm in 2010 when the team is nothing but broken down guys making 15 million plus a year and Yankee fans can't figure out why they can't finish ahead of Boston and Tampa.
the 5 year, $91M rumor has since been retracted by Rosenthal (the one who reported it) ... the offer is 5/$80M
Wow Rosenthal seems to breaking alot of stories but they all seem to have factual errors. There is a major difference between 80 and 91 million. I saw something else of his that was sort of accurate but again had some serious factual errors. I'd rather a guy report the story 2nd but have all his facts together. I'd have been pretty pissed if he reports The Mets acquire JJ Putz and Jeff Clement from Seattle and 15 minutes later it's oops it's Putz and Reed.
crasnick and bowman have it at 85, and crasnick earlier said his asking price was 91.5, which is what zambrano got
This is pretty amazing. I'm sure they would have interest in a 1 or 2 year deal but dreadlocks in the Bronx?...lol. "Report: Yankees considering a run at Manny Besides being in on virtually every big ticket starting pitcher on the market, the Yankees are also mulling trying to sign Manny Ramirez as well, according to SI.com's Jon Heyman. "Yankees co-owner Hank Steinbrenner is said by people close to him to want Manny Ramirez in pinstripes," writes Heyman. "Unlike his father, who dreaded dreadlocks, Steinbrenner the junior is said by a Yankees person 'not to give a (hoot) about his hair.' " ... According to ESPN.com's Jayson Stark, agent Scott Boras met with the Dodgers late Monday to discuss Manny. Stark reported that Boras told the Dodgers that Ramirez is open to coming back to LA, but sources familiar with the meeting told ESPN.com that the Dodgers did not put their two-year, $45-million contract offer back on the table. ... Stark surveyed some baseball people on when they thought each big-name free agent would sign. The average signing date predicted for Manny was Jan. 18, later than any other free agent." http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/thebuzz/
Manny in pinstripes would be great. Ultimate FU to the BoSox. But anything more than a 3 year deal would be absurd.
