I was against the F-Rod thing because I assumed it would have been a 5 or more year deal. Three years changes it for me.
Great deal for the Mets, great closer in the prime of his career who was made for the big stage of NY. One thing I will say about Minaya, he knows how to handle negotiations.
Let's calm down with the Omar praise, the Mets are paying 12m+ a year for a guy who's going to pitch 65 innings.
Are you denying it is a great deal for the best closer available? I don't think this is some brilliant decision by Omar, just a good negotiating strategy. In the end he gets the best closer available at a pretty darn good price. Job well done.
No praise until he fills out the team completely, I can't stand it when this team would fill one need but completely ignore another need
Yeah, I always read the articles on the Mets Mobile website on my phone, and one of them suggested that Omar was comfortable with a Murphy/Tatis platoon in LF to start the season.
Of course he is, he's a fuckin idiot. Anyone can throw money at people if they have it. That said, I like this move for 3years, 5 woulda sent me off the deep end. Go get Hudson, Street, Ibanez or Dunn and I'll be happy. If Ibanez or Dunn is signed, that pretty much spells the end for Church right?
Yeah, I'm denying that it's a great deal. Fact is the Mets will have about 23 million tied up in the closer position next year and aren't going to see a whole lot of return on that investment. If it doesn't effect the rest of the off season then who really cares, but if this was Omar's big move to fix the Mets then it was extremely poorly spent money.
We were going to tie up a ton of money in the closer position no matter what we do since Wagner is basically dead money, there is nothing we can do about that. Even if we choice a cheaper option we are only saving 1 or 2 million. And I'd rather spend cash than spend cash and prospects. However, we both agree that we can't stop here or this offseason is a failure.
I don't really see the problem with the K-Rod deal. We desperately needed a closer, and we got the best one we could get. It's highly unlikely K-Rod prohibits us from making other significant moves, so I'm happy. Word is Minaya wants to grab a starter or two, a top notch 8th inning guy, and a power hitting right handed outfielder. If he accomplishes these things (and/or upgrades from Castillo, which is possible) then we can consider the offseason a success. No reason to believe he'll fail...yet.
Except for his track record and penchant for the "big deal" while ignoring/failing to fill other holes on the roster.
Well, your signature is "fire omar." I don't really expect you to say anything else, but I'm a little more optimistic.
That isn't bias it is fact or do you want to neglect the number of starts we gave to bums the past 2 years because Omar neglected rotation depth. And overall depth on this team has been poor overall.
I wasn't saying it was bias, but he has a more negative perspective on Minaya than I do (you obviously do as well). Yes, he's made some poor deals and has neglected depth...But he got us to the brink of the World Series in 2006 and that team was as good as any team in the majors that year. I choose to place more of the blame of '07 on Randolph than him, although you're right, Lima Time should've been avoided. As for this year, while the bullpen wasn't great to start, it fell apart completely near the end and Minaya couldn't have fixed that. I'd rate him the past 3 years as a C+. Not bad, but nothing to write home about. As for this off-season, all reports suggest the Mets are in on guys they should be. Minaya's looking into starting pitching (Lowe is getting too much money, but he's negotiating for Ollie, Wolf, and Garland at the least), relief (looking to trade for Street and Capps, and who knows who else), and the outfield (Ibanez and Dye potentially). I like where he's looking so far, and there could be guys we don't know about yet. So I'm optimistic, and I'm happy with the K-Rod signing.
