2009 Draft ---- Let me just preface this by explaining that I will utilize a draft by position need basis, as opposed to BPA. I couldnt think of anything for the 7th round ----- please suggest someone. 1) Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR, Maryland 6-2 205. 4.33/40 time. 2009 is the last year for L. Coles. We cant wait until the 2010 draft for a WR & expect him to step in + contribute as a rookie. Keller appears to be a playmaker & it couldn’t hurt to add another. This might be putting the cart before the horse as we do not know who our QB could be. But whoever it is, I would prefer to supply with the weapons first. 3) Domonique Johnson, CB, Jackson State 6-2 190. 4.34/40 time (New Orleans Saints - Jonathan Vilma Trade). Our pass defense makes me sick to my stomach every Sunday (usually between 1pm & 4pm). Ty Law is starting to show his age & while I am a Dwight Lowery fan, I think the next DC is going to want a tight man-to-man coverage pass D as opposed to whatever it is we have right now. If this kid works out the way I hope, then we would have a minimum of 3 very competent CBs in the nickel & dime packages. 3) Vince Oghobaase, DT, Duke 6-6 310. I think that CJ Mosley & Mike DeVito are solid depth players who should get more rotation opportunities than they do. But Ellis isn’t getting younger & I think that Kenyon Coleman is a nice guy, but average player at best. 4) Either Courtney Greene, SS/FS, Rutgers 6-1 209 4.47/40 time Or Myron Rolle, S, FSU 6-2 218 4.46/40 time (Washington Redskins - Pete Kendall trade) Not sure which of these players will be here, but here’s to hoping that the JETS continue their streak of finding gems in the 4th round. Of the 2, I would prefer Greene, but I think Rolle is a guy that will do well. Neither might be the long term solution at safety, but I think either would be an instant upgrade over Eric Smith at the least & battle Elam for a starting position. 5) Jaspar Brinkley, ILB, South Carolina 6-2 260. Eric Barton is a UFA after the 2008 season. I do not think we should get involved in a bidding war for him, but I would prefer we do what we can to keep him for at least 2 years, max of 3 years. I know Barton will be 32 at the start of 2009 training camp, but s--t, Tedy Bruschi turned 35 before the 2008 training camp. My concerns with Brinkley is obviously the knee injury thing & also his pass coverage skills. We have the run covered with Jenkins & Harris, but then again it is hard to find an ILB good at pass coverage. 6) Andrew Gardner, OT, Georgia Tech 6-6 300. A 3 year starter who might be a little light but has good skills particularly run-blocking.
If Oghobaase comes out he won't last until the 3rd. I also doubt Brinkley lasts until the 5th. Courtney Greene sucks. I like DHB in the first though.
If Myron Rolle lasts until the 4th round, the world will end. I like the picks, especially Jasper Brinkley, who I have in my mock too. I didn't like Rodgers-Cromartie last year, and I don't like Dom Johnson this year. I'm not a fan of small school corners with good 40 times.
I thought the same thing last year about Dre Moore DE from Maryland. The guy was supposed to be a 2nd round lock, he sunk all the way down to the 4th round & is no longer playing. Same thing with Josh Barrett S from ASU - guaranteed nothing lower than the 3rd round,...he ended up undrafted. Ahyta Rubin NT from Iowa St. - supposed to be 3rd round, just barely made it on day 2 in the 6th round. Myron Rolle is great - athletic ability, incredible speed & football smarts (Rhodes Scholar). But lately, its become questionable if he is a big time hitter.
yeah I have no idea how rolle would fall that far even though he is going to Oxford to study medicine
I think Oghobaase could fall to that round just like he said Dre Moore fell all the down to the 4th i think when he was getting consideration for the 1st-2nd, certain positions are like that especially o-line and d-line
Dre Moore was an overweight defensive lineman. Myron Rolle is the captain on one of most dangerous defenses in college football - plus he's a genius. He has the chance to be an athletic John Lynch.
he sounds scary then. Electric whats your grade on him atm, in other words, at this point in time, prior to bowl games and combine and all those other good things, what round is your guess he goes in?
heyward bey isnt the wr we need. I go to University of maryland although hes a deep threat and such he wont be a number 1 guy in the nfl. Hes more of a burner like a stallworth we need a guy whos got decent speed and is big and physical
Rolle is probably gonna go to Oxford reading about the guy and hearing him in a couple of interviews he is definitely more interested in academics then football , if he decides to declare he'll be a second rounder
Rolle is smart and a great leader but he has been attacked all year by opposing QBs on pass plays. It was actually part of the opposing team's game plan to pass on Rolle and he was targeted as a weak link. He is a great guy and for a football player especially a brilliant mind, but I don't want to take the Rolle Risk -- plus he won't be able to contribute right away as he will be in England for 2 years studying and we are in win NOW mode. I'd rather a S like Michael Hamlin in that range.
With all due respect, I think you answered your own question. Why should teams spend a 2nd round draft pick on a player who could possibly be more interested in pursuing a future in academics than playing football. There have been some interviews in which he appears to be more interested in the Rhodes Scholarship program that he has qualified for.
I dont think Dom Johnson is on is Cromartie's level as far as talent , he'll be a 3-4th round pick something like Justin King last year.
Well, I think Heyward-Bey is a good receiver but we don't need another possession receiver. We already have an entire corps full of them. I think the Jets will look to add a free agent WR with game breaking skills. Unfortunately, our receivers lack a true number 1. Coles is a number 2. Cotchery (despite my adoration for him) is a slot receiver/#2) and after that we have no game breakers to speak of. Keller is a tight end/h-back and not a true #1 but a good addition. I don't think they go for a WR with the first pick, instead look for a guy like TJ Housh or Anquan Boldin to be sought after by the front office. As for who I think they'll target with this number one pick... I originally would have said safety but Elam has been playing fairly well and we've put a lot of money into the secondary as it is. I can see them going after a young 3-4 DE to bring into the rotation with Coleman and Ellis or to draft some youth for our O-Line since Faneca and Woody aren't getting any younger. So, perhaps Tyson Jackson (DE-LSU) or Duke Robinson (OG-Oklahoma) for us somewhere at the bottom of round one? Also, it's still very early.
