Right... how is that trying to save face, though? That's the part I'm confused about. I mean, if they miss out on their primary targets... okay, that sucks (for them)... but it doesn't mean that the purpose behind any move they do make has to do with anything other than improving the team. Aw, dammit, the Yanks have to settle for one of the best right-handed hitters to ever play the game?! Phooey.

Again, I would argue that we are witnessing "the Yankees would like to improve the team" being the major reason for the move... certainly more important in the reasoning than any PR explanations about needing a blockbuster.

If I had to bet, though, I say CC, Lowe, and Pettitte wind up in pinstripes next year, and Manny doesn't.

ETA: After thinking about it more this morning, I could see the Yanks getting CC, Pettitte, and Manny, and bypassing on Lowe, if they can trade either Damon or Matsui for pitching of any kind. That's a big "if" though. Or if Olney's report about Cano for Billingsley is true. *drool*

Normally, I would agree but in this economy it might be better to take an earlier offer than a later one. The news everyday only gets worse. It's still joe sixpack that has to buy the tickets and the $20 hotdogs. The days of corporate America bailing you out are gone for now. They and the people running them are getting burned even more than the middle class.

I doubt the Dodgers trade Billingsly, especially for Cano. I had just read that the Yankees were going to propose it, and the Dodgers were, rightfully, going to pass.

If I never hear this phrase again, it would still be too soon. Worst. Catchphrase. Ever.

The Yankees also have had internal discussions about second baseman Orlando Hudson, whom they would sign, presumably, if they were to move closer to the long-considered swap of Robinson Cano to the Dodgers (or some other team). If the Yankees were to trade Cano to L.A., they almost certainly would insist upon an elite pitcher like Clayton Kershaw or Chad Billingsley in return, and in failing to get that, they'd lock in on outfielder Matt Kemp.

Yes, please cite this. I'm anxious to read about this trade because I have heard nothing.

Somebody seems to have turned George King on to the idea of Cano + Cabrera for Kemp. Kemp was the untouchable player in the Manny deal last year. Interesting to see all thing NYY-LAD talk, though.

I just don't understand a trade with the Dodgers. There's no way the Yankees could win the trade as Torre knows the players' value.

Okay. That's what I have heard, too. Where does it say that "the Dodgers were, rightfully, going to pass" on that deal?

I think you're giving Torre too much credit. He seems to value veteran-ness and guts more than talent.

Let's hope Torre has Coletti's ear. We could probably trade Matsui and Damon for Billingsley, Kershaw, and Kemp.

Wouldn't Cano fall into that now?

If he does, then that makes it easier for Cashman to rape Coletti. (I don't think it's going to happen... just a pipe dream of mine.)

If Hank and Hal had any balls, they would give CC 24 hours to accept the offer or take it off the table by 9PM Monday, New York time TOMORROW. Thats what the Mets did with Santana last year - TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT. The Mets are going to do the same thing with KROD and Fuentes this week, TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT. Time for the Yankee brass to grow some balls.

I'm pretty sure he'd pass on it if he had some deadline. Then when the Yankees realised they fucked up, they'd increase their offer.

Easier to do after the Twins had no other options left.
