Its much easier to make a mock offseason when your team sucks. Last year there must have been 50 of these done for the JETS already. GM --- Get Scott Pioli from the PATS Free Agents QB Matt Cassel (only if not franchised) WR Jabar Gaffney DT Tank Johnson CB Dunta Robinson Their 2009 draft 1) Michael Oher OT Ole Miss 1) Brandon Spikes ILB Florida 2) Alex Mack C California 3) DeAngelo Williamham CB Tennessee 3) Nic Harris SS Oklahoma
+1 How does the OP propose the Lions get Pioli? I guess the Fords could throw an ungodly amount of money at him.
I was listening to Charlie Casserly on FAN and he said if Cassel leaves the Pats get a 3rd round pick as compensation, with the compensation being determined by player salary. He also said it would cost $14.5M to franchise Cassel. So its pretty clear that Cassel is going to leave. His big asset is athleticism, especially mobility, but backup O'Connel is more athletic, more mobile. O'Connel had the second best 40 time of a QB in last year's draft and led his college team in rushing. Cassel is gone.
Cowher has no interest in this job. I think the Ford family will finally pony up some money & get 1 of the top GMs out there - apparently Pioli has interest, Floyd Reese or even Charley Casserly himself. If Pioli comes over, I would pretty much bet he is going to try & bring Matt Cassel with him. It would fill that position right away. With no running game & all the pressure in the world on him, Cassel has made a believer in me that he has a place in this league. I know the Lions are not the PATS, but the Lions have a ton of positions to fill. Matt Cassel is an unrestricted Free Agent, the PATS have to let him go or franchise him & apparently their cap situation is tight. If the Lions dont trade down out of the top spot to acquire more picks (they should), then they will grab Michael Oher so that Jeff Backus could move inside to guard. Oher could have been a top 10 pick last year.
The NFL compensates teams that lose players via FA. It's a way to keep small market teams like Pittsburgh competitive. They traditional lose lots of players through not being able to compete financially with the big market teams. So at the end of rounds 3-7, extra picks are given out. If you're a good drafting team (like Pittsburgh has traditionally been), these picks are gold. You can replenish your roster for cheap $$.
Are you sure about this? This is the first time I've ever heard of this draft pick compensation rule for unrestricted free agents.
Cower had none of the responsibilities of a GM at pittsburgh. What makes you think he could handle doing it in Detroit? The Lions do need to hire a GM. Possibly a Coach. They really need a complete overhaul.
I figured the Lions offseason would be more complicated than that... Fire everybody thats not a rookie, Calvin Johnson or Ernie Simms, leigh Bodden. Then re-hire an entire new staff, and then get a real GM, and a real Coach (Rex Ryan promotion time? or Mike Singeltary if the Niners don't feel he is their coach of the future?) then get a new team entirely, then of course don't draft a reciever #1 overall, draft a freaking QB! your team blows ass, and its doubtful that an OL will help that franchise without a QB.
They are called compensatory picks. Here's an explanation of them from the web: Based on the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement a team is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks if it is determined that they lost more or better players than they were able to acquire during the previous year's free agency period. The number of picks a team receives equals the net loss of compensatory free agents (maximum of four). Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula that was developed by the NFL Management Council. Not every free agent lost or signed by a team is covered by this formula Also note these picks can not be traded. Here's the NFL's announcement of the compensatory picks for the 2008 draft: http://www.nfl.com/draft/story?id=09000d5d80780d69&template=with-video&confirm=true
^^ Thanks for the info. One can learn something new every day on TGG. F-----g PATS. Somehow they always find a way to get something.
Terry Bradway didn't know about it either. He would regualrly lose marquee FAs and sign no-name backups allowing the NFL to point out that as we had 3-out and 4-in we were due nothing, despite the guys going out being much more valuable.
