First, the reason they are focusing on offense should be fairly obvious. They got rid of Manny and Lowell and Ortiz are big question marks heading into the season. Second, if they get a big time starting pitcher, which they don't really need, it would likely be Burnett due to John Henry's love for him. But like I said, they don't really need him. Beckett, Matsuzaka, Lester are a fantastic 1-2-3, and they have Wakefield and his 180-200 innings of 100+ ERA+ in the 4th spot, with Buchholz, Bowden, Masterson, and whatever veteran they bring in to compete for the 5th spot. If they don't add another starter, they still have one of the top rotations in baseball, assuming health.
Holy shit Don. Do you even read articles before you just assume they back up whatever insane point you're desperately trying to prove? All that article said was that the Yankees' offer was too much for anyone else to actually compete with, so in the end, regardless of where he or his wife desire him to play, he'll be a Yankee, because their offer was too big for anyone else to realistically match. All this proves is that the Yankees knew what they were doing when they made such a big offer to him to kick off the FA signing season. As for the Sox, devil already answered that question. Not that it hasn't been answered other ways already, such as the Sox and Yanks will no longer allow themselves to be made the center of bidding wars when one or the other doesn't have a clear and desperate need for that particular player.
That article says no such thing. Did you read it? It says nobody else is making an offer. Not because of the Yankee money, only you would think that. He already has an offer for 100 million on the table. All of those teams have the money on the west coast and nobody wants him. That's what it says. At least not yet.
They still scored more runs than anybody in the league not named Texas and that was without Manning for half the year. As far as Beckett is concerned they have a real legitimate concern about his health going forward. I don't think your reasons have anything to do with it. They don't want him because they know he is not worth the investment. Every team not named NY seems to know it too. And the Yankees who couldn't score worth a damn last year to begin with let 200 RBIs walk away and replace them with a bum named Swisher and figure that will solve their offensive problems while throwing money away or at least trying to throw it away on Sabathia. He will be extremely lucky to have more wins than Pettitte and certainly won't have as many as Mussina. All for 140 mil. Typical Cashman move.
I have an idea... why don't you just stop rooting for the Yankees? It seems you'd be happier that way. We'll be happier that way. Everybody wins. Maybe you could offer your analytical skills to an investment bank.
Reading comprehension. That's all I'm going to say. Well, and that you're wrong. But you'll be the only one who doesn't see it.
Schiling and Clemens were never overweight like Sabathia is, And wells pitched a ton of years, but had knee and back problems and lots of DL trips.
Schilling most definitely was. ...problems which didn't start showing up until he was a few years older than Sabathia would be when this six-year contract with the Yanks would end. I mean, people DO realize that Sabathia would only be 33 years old going into the last year of his contract, right? To again point out something that Don ignored in a previous post, it's not like signing Kevin Brown to a seven year deal when he was 34. And here's another question I asked before, and want Don to answer... if you are so dead set against this deal (or any long deal), why did you want Santana so badly? He's older than Sabathia, got a six-year deal, commanded just as much money, and we would have needed to give up talent to get him. How does that even come close to making sense? Please explain this to me.
I didn't think it was possible, but there's something you know less about than the Yankees, and that's the Red Sox. First, Beckett will be fine. He had a torn oblique and has had all offseason to recover, which is more than the needed time. Also, why do they have a "real legitimate concern" about him, but not for Ortiz and Lowell who actually ARE question marks? And how do you figure he would win fewer games than Pettitte or Mussina? Nevermind the fact that wins are an awful measure of a pitcher, he's a far better pitcher than either of them. Wells was fairly durable actually. If you take out the first 3 years where he was a reliever, he averaged 190 IP, and that's including the last couple years when he hasn't pitched full seasons. He also didn't develop back problems until 2001 when he was 38 years old.
Are you kidding?! The Red Sox let Roger walk to Toronto because he was letting his body go and his pitching had declined. In his last year in Boston, his body was the spitting image of Sabathia's today. Suddenly moves to Toronto, meets Brian McAfee, turns into a workout machine, and that tubby bastard turned into physical specimen. Schilling admitted showing up fat as shit, fuhcryinoutloud. He needed weight incentives in his last Red Sox contract.
I can only dream but maybe the fool is finally going to make a smart move and pull the Sabathia offer and go after Teixiera...I can dream anyway. Instead he will probably just offer him more. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3746452
The way it looks now to me: Yanks trade for Peavy. Boston signs Teixiera. Yanks counter and sign Manny Ramirez Sabathia signs with Angels Yanks Sign Pettitte
Actually, I could be fine with that. Of course I would rather have Teixiera than Manny but Manny would be motivated at least 18 games a year. That would also save the Yankees about 75 million bucks too. They could go after one of the other two A pitchers with that.
The winter of redemption for Scott Boras. After the A-Hole debacle, and before that the Daisuke misread, he's probably looking at a $15-20 million winter.
I don't know that I'm comfortable with a Peavy trade. First, I've already stated my point that I think his ERA would inflate in the AL East. Second, what are we going to have to give up to get him? I'd weep if Boston got Teixeira. I'd like Manny either way. Especially if he's willing to DH. Then we can dump Matsui. If Sabathia signs with the Angels I wouldn't be happy. I'd like to have him, and if he doesn't come here, I'd rather he pitched in the NL. Regardless of anything else, I'd take Pettitte back as a fifth starter if he's willing to take a large paycut. He'd be a helluva backend pitcher.
Nothing, the SD GM is a headcase right now. He want to cut payroll to 20 Mil, so he would take low money players or prospects. That Khalil Greene trade should have been vetoed.
