We should really try and bring Bellichik back in as defensive coordinator. He did a great job for us in the late 90s, and I don't think he would object that much to taking orders from Mangini.
Crennel is likely going back to NE. But that's all Belichicks defense anyway when is Jim Johnson (eagles) contract up? Monte Kiffin perhaps? Both are old though
before i read the rest of the thread: yes, and rex ryan or steve spagnola as the HEAD coach. hell, favre or chad could have been their own offensive coordinator.
I'd take Rob Ryan or a LeBeau disciple. Anything is an upgrade from Sutton I've had it with that guy.
You're kidding right? Let's be real. His presence in Cleveland convinces me that it was Belichek who was the genius behind the Patriots Super Bowl defense. Every week, it pains me to see the look on Crennel's face as the Browns fail every week. Spare me with Crennel. I like the idea of Keith Butler. Maybe he could put some fire in Gholston. I'm still rooting for the guy to succeed, but I'm disappointed he hasn't made much progress. The play where he was chasing Cutler, he looked like he has cement in his ass.
In my opinion, Bob Sutton is just a conduit for Mangini's defense. He has been a coach for the NYJs through three regimes now. He's a player's coach, not a strategist, first and foremost. Mangini's defense is the same as Crennel's and that whole group of Parcells / Bellichick 3-4 hybrid guys, with a few wrinkles. If the QB persists in taking three step drops or stays in a no-huddle shotgun, then covering the third and 4th options is problematic with this defensive secondary. I think there is a strategic shift necessary for the rest of this season, if this NYJs team is going to take advantage of its opportunities. We used to call it "red dog" but it all amounts to blitzing the QB on every play from one or more directions and you don't quit until he fumbles, gets intercepted, or they give up and punt the ball. Kind of like Pittsburgh. Kind of like Philadelphia. Kind of like the NYJs when they're working. But you guys need to recognize that Sutton's just the messenger -- the defense is Mangini's, the buck stops there.
Bingo. Thank you for nailing it. Mangini is the head coach. If you don't like the defense (and I don't, they don't blitz enough and play way too much coverage for me), you blame him, and here's why. 1) Mangini, as head coach, is dictating the strategy for these games and approving the play calls 2) Mangini as allocated the entire defensive strategy and play calling to Sutton and has no input whatsoever--and therefore is tacitly approving a defense that is not working. In other words, it's either his design, which makes him incompetent, or it's Sutton's design, which makes him negligent. Either way, he's on the hook for it. What makes you think another coach will make a difference?
Wade Philips was the DC while San Diego was having tons of success with agressive blitzing schemes a few years ago. He's a great 3-4 DC and would be perfect for the job, but no way is he going to be available anytime soon.
I agree with you on that - Mangini is ultimately responsible for all of the coaching decisions that are being made for this team. However, if the move was made to bring in someone new at DC, at least that would signal some kind of a shift in mentality. And if the fact is that Mangini is just tacitly approving the defensive playcalling by not interfering with it, wouldn't we rather have him tacitly approving a DC who's actually wiling to take some chances?

My feeling is that you are correct. If so, we should expect to see no change or another puppet. Regarding this comment: "Let's be real. I don't think I've actually seen one Browns game this year so I'll take what you say and repudiate my previous recommendation for him as DC. I guess I really don't know who would be the right choice.
Last season, Mangini took more day to day responsibility of the defense after the bye week. The team played better after that. After that scenario, I always assumed Mangini was the brains behind the D and Sutton assisted.
It isn't likely (since he reportedly wants to stay close to home if he even does come back to coaching), but I would love to have Cowher come back to coaching as the Jets' DC. Not gonna happen, but we can dream, can't we?
