Here's an interesting Mangini quote on the subject of Vernon Gholston.

    From Erik Boland's Blog

    * Eric Mangini has sometimes, to the point of strained credibility, gone to great lengths to laud the progress of Vernon Gholston this season. Not today.

?He had a significant shot yesterday,? said Mangini, asked if Gholston maybe could have gotten some more playing time against the Broncos. ?You know, there were plays to be made. You know, his opportunities were based on his ability to make those plays.?

And how did he do with that ?significant shot? a reporter asked.

?I think he needs to continue to improve,? Mangini said through what appeared to be semi-clenched teeth.

    It was honest. "

I'm starting to lose faith in this kid....i'm one of the posters that kept saying that we should reserve judgement till next season....but these comments by Mangini doesn't reinforce my confidence in Gholston. I hope to god he does a complete 180 and starts producing next season.

Thank god we Keller in the first round.

Well if that stat is correct it shows how many inferior DLs there are in the NFL including ours.

No, it shows that those two OL's are good. I swear, sometimes I think you're borderline retarded with the shit you come up with.

No, since I'm not old, senile and retired, and actually have something like a JOB, I won't be going. You'll fit right in in San Francisco though.

Sounds like Mangini has finally figured out what some of us have known since the first game of the year. Running after a QB is not a skill position and doesn't require a year or 2 to figure out how to do it. You either have the talent or you don't.

I just watched the play where he pressured Cutler again. Cutler is rolling out but briefly stops with a stutter-step. Gholston completely falls for this and looks like he is getting ready to play a cut-back by Cutler. He did look slow, as is the consensus here. What I found most disturbing was that he never put his arms up. If you can't reach the QB on a naked boot like that you at least should get your arms up to obscure his field of vision. Gholston, as a pass-rushing specialist, should at least know that. Very disappointing play all around.

Everyone needs to calm down about the ghost. Trust me, I'll scream bust when I see one (please see my numerous bust threads about Justin Miller) but, you need to give the kid more than 12 games.

It's a tough transition from DE to OLB, and right now our LB corps is playing well...well enough that a rookie can sit and wait.

I think you should check out post #50 in this thread

  14. It never ceases to amaze me how jet fans WANT their players to be busts. Remember all that talk about how Brick was a bust? Just wait...he'll have one game where he gives up 2 sacks and suddenly it'll be the "we shouldve drafted vernon davis" show all over again.

Brick was a Tackle that played the position in College and had to get up to pro speed. His crime was he got drafted too high. We drafted a Hybrid who shot up the draft chart because of 40 times and reps at the combines. We took a workout warrior and not a Football player. The guy we should have gotten was the true Lb that the Pats got in Jerod Mayo as evidenced by him being all over the field when we played the pats. The man on Gholstons team was Laurinatus not Gholston and time will prove it. He had a few Awesome games that gave him great sack stats and disappeared like he has done this year in alot of other games in college. We got had plain and simple. I wish it was not true but we went for style over substance yet again and got burnt for the latest over hyped draft bum.

I wouldn't be so afraid of him being a bust if he actually showed anything out there.

People keep saying "the transition from DE to OLB is hard." But should that stop him from playing at full speed and looking like he just filled up his diaper and is chasing around a jackrabbit?

The last place I want to take a vacation to is to San Francisco. You'll fit in really well there.

It might have just been the slick turf though. I think that's why the Broncos ran so many screens to their WR's. It looked as if he was trying to keep his footing on that play. It still wasn't a great play by him, but that may have contributed to it.
