After re-watching the Jets vs. Broncos game, I will list our needs in the following order: 1) Immediate S replacement for Elam. 2) Immediate ILB starter to put next to Harris when he comes back. 3) An upgrade at DE. 4) RT - Woody is old and not playing up to his contract. 5) CB - Ty Law will need a walker soon, and Lowery has been very hot-cold. 6) Top WR - Can wait until 2010. We have Coles coming back for one more season, Cotchery, Stuckey, Smith and Clowney at full health. The 2010 WR crop could look as good as: Crabtree (injured now), Benn, DHB (likely to go in 2009 with Crabtree's injury), Bryant, Harvin, Maclin (will likely declare especially with Crabtree's injury so this is unlikely). That would be unreal. 7) NT depth - there are some good big NTs that can be had late in the draft. 8) OG depth. Thomas Jones is playing on-fire and with Leon behind him I think we are good at RB for now.
Woody is doing great. He has given up one sack and most runs go to the right side. The 1,2,3,5-8 are correct thought. I'd switch RT with QB though. I hope Ratliff is the next franchise QB, if not then the Jets need to get one. The Jets have a lot of draft picks, so hopefully they can get a couple of starters right away.
As of right now and assuming Favre is coming back next year I see our biggest need by far is WR next year. With Coles declining our WRs are average at best, Cotch is a good #2 but we need someone to step into the #1 spot for Coles, the sooner the better. After that, CB, S, pass rushing OLB & QB are the biggest needs.
I think ILB is a bigger need than S. We're constantly getting exploited over the middle by everyone's tight ends. Our current LBs can't cover...so we need to bring someone in that can. Don't read too much into Crabtree's injury. It's just an ankle sprain. He'll more than likely come out and be the first wideout selected in the draft. I really don't know how you can get a "top" wide receiver if that position is buried on your needs chart?
From the perspective of position need drafting (as opposed to BPA), I tend to think that we need to have another shutdown cornerback. Its not that Lowery isnt good or capable.......I just think that Revis is such a shutdown corner, that the opposing QB is going to throw to the other side all day long & that puts a lot of pressure on a guy like Lowery. Cassel, Cutler, Thigpen have all picked up apart on pass D. We let up a ton of yards to them. Clearly, this is our weakness & we need to fix it.
Cutler had 13 passes for 149 yards to his TIGHT ENDS. That's not on Lowery. Barton, Spencer, Pace, Thomas, Bowens, and whoever else rotated in at the vacant ILB position was the biggest problem against Denver. Our linebackers can't cover worth a damn...and everyone is going after them. Elam is pretty bad himself, so we need to replace him as well.
I agree that a cover LB is needed. Someone who can put pressure on the QB is needed as well. I hate rookie WRs. Trade for one or get one from free agency instead. If we pick up a WR in the draft it would be for 3 years from now.
I think safety is the only "need" for us unless the FO does not think one of the 3 QBs Ainge/Clemens/Ratliff is the QB of the future then QB is also a "need." Otherwise, we have the flexibility to take BAP and find us a playmaker at some position.
Houshmanzadeh is the biggest FA wideout available this off-season. I don't know if we have much of a shot with him if Favre retires.
We need a qb! Favre has been awesome, but all other needs are secondary. Knowing the history of the draft, we can get a top qb prospect with a late first round pick. It would be stupid for us to pass on a qb. I really want us to draft Nate Davis, if not Davis, then if Sanchez leaves early, he would be my second most desirable prospect. I agree with all other needs, but all of these can and should be dealt with in the later rounds (2-7). There is a huge drop off of talent from round 1-2, to all the other rounds in terms of qb potential.
I hear what you are saying, but isnt the problem you are describing is more of a fault with the zone passing schemes, i.e. Bob Sutton?? I never saw 1 of our guys locked on the TE man-to-man. I saw a ton of zone Ds -- especially when Cutler was running to his right & throwing across his body to the TE standing amongst 4 frozen JETS.
We do play more zone than we should, but you don't see our linebackers playing man on tight ends because they're getting beat by double moves...which is sad that they're getting beat by slow tight ends like Daniel Graham. Scaife was open A LOT last week against the Titans. He might have had 100 yards if he hung on to a couple of those passes. Sutton will probably be replaced next season if we don't get more aggressive. I want to see someone like Jasper Brinkley, Rey Maulauga, or James Laurainaitis drafted in fill that void in the middle. Mangini will probably draft a couple defensive backs, so don't worry about that...
I said we need to get a "top" WR in the 2010 draft when WR might just be the position stocked with the most talent. If not, it will only be trumped by D-line. Also, I don't know how I forgot QB. I think Favre will come back next year because he knows if he retires this time there is no way he can come back into the league. One more season for Favre seems about right, but I wouldn't be against taking a QB like Rhett Bomar or Nate Davis in 2009, but I'd rather go after a guy in 2010. The 2010 QB list could look like: Bradford, Stafford, Sanchez, Freeman, Locker (I like this guy a lot), McCoy, Davis, Rusty Smith (watch out for this guy from Florida Atlantic), and (Zac) Robinson....and of course the controversial Tim Tebow.
Brandon Spikes is the best cover ILB and someone the jets should target, also another corner is probably is needed because there is one thing Lowery will never get better at and thats his speed he has great ball hawking skills but i would like to see him play nickel and bring another guy in, Mark Parson specifically. Next is safety cause although he has proven to provide playmaking ability like Rhodes has provided in the past he is out of position alot and we need a more consistent player to help Rhodes out.
well its occurring to me now that we need a DB of some kind, however I would still prefer to have a running back or wide receiver I wouldnt mind going to the second round to get one but I still think the need rests in a DB of some kind a corner or a saftey
This list is pretty awful and knee jerk. The fact that WR is so far down on the list is crazy. Barton and Woody are having a pro-bowl seasons.
There are no shutdown CBs in the NFL. Revis is pretty close though. If we can apply some QB pressure Revis and Lowery will be plenty good enough. I don't blame the FO on this one. They went out and got what 2 of the "top" pass rushers in both the FA market and draft; they just haven't panned out.
