I hate to bring this up, but our secondary can't stop even a poor passing offense either. The saddest part is that we usually drop 8 guys into coverage, only rushing 3, and there are STILL gaping holes in the zones.
When fans and that includes me look in the off season at a team filling up with rookies, FA's, trades, players who were second string who are elevated to starters, we tend to give passing reference to bench strength, but focus on the starters. I myself was concerned about who would play opposite Revis, and was mildly encouraged when Lowery had some good moments in pre-season. But of course when opponents force you into nickel and dime packages, you see plenty of your secondary bench strength, or lack thereof. This is where the Jets seem weakest right now, and it is not totally shocking it has come to this. Eric Smith was the starter, he's out, and was not playing so great before he got hurt, but Elam was exposed as a weak armed tackler yesterday. Law is perhaps not totally finished, but he's not a strong corner, the kind the Jets need to stay with opponents with good passing games. Other parts of the team can be inconsistent here and there, but the secondary's bench is a big concern for this team right now. How far the team goes will likely depend on getting some improvement in the pass D. Speaking of inconsistencies, the wideouts are not elite, either. But they are serviceable. Not like the nickel and dime packages, which are neither.
I like your attitude. You probably get more enjoyment out of sports than 95% of the posters here as well. Keeping things in perspective will do that for ya. Mangini saying that they didn't coach that well either was good to hear. Some coaches put it all on the players, which would not of been fair in this instance. Several bad moves made by the coaches on Sunday.
The dropping of 8 is what bothers me!!!! When you give a QB 5 seconds to throw there's not a DB in the league that can stay with a WR that long. Cutler could've baked a cake back there with the amount of time he had. We need to start blitzing...we all know they are going to complete passes when we drop 8 so why not atleast try something different. Also how many WR screens does a team have to do before the DBs stop playing 10 yards off the ball.
So wherever we look we see the monster, and it is us. Blitz more + adequate coverage = Kill the monster (sacks are glamorous but less frequent, hurries are less glamorous but more prevalent and just as damgerous) There is nothing like the fear of failure to peak the performance of the best and separate the rest. I too can't wait for Sunday. Looking for Jenkins to be solid hoping that stimultes the rest.
