Getting Harris back will help a lot too. He's a good blitzer, and better in coverage than spenser/bowens. Pace has spent more time in coverage since harris went out.
Definitely, Harris is our most complete LBer by far. It's very impressive that we've been able to do so well without him.
Actually, on ESPN they did some insightful stat where when we send 5+ we were far more successful against Collins than when we brought 4. His TD came against 5 rushers, but his passer rating was waaaay lower. Sutton's just got bad timing and/or doesn't utilize his talent.
The worst timing yesterday was when the Jets sent six I believe and the Titans had a screen called to Johnson.
Everytime Mosely is in the game, it seems like he get's to the QB. He should be in more often. As far as the pass rush, it seems a lot of times that our defenders are a split second away from hitting the qb on numerous occasions.
And I could point out that we had significant leads in both games. That would affect how most coaches work, because the opponent has to adjust to our gameplan that worked before we can adjust anything we do. We also had a significant lead heading into the second half yesterday. The Titans did a little work on our pass D, but not enough to come back. Call it improvement. And people really need to let go of this Raiders game...fucking up is not a sign of dark times aheads... In my always humble opinion, this sounds like another case of "Jets-fans-looking-for-something-to-complain-about-itis." New disease I made up. It's an issue...but the only thing that can be done is that we keep playing like we've been playing. We can't magic anyone to improve their coverage abilities. If it was killing us, we wouldn't be 8-3. We will need to worry about it come playoff time...but our offense needs to keep rolling for the problem to stay minor IMO...I explained it somewhere else...but our D really relies on our offenses ability to sustain long drives.
So no one thinks we just play too pussy once we get a lead and we don't attack at the LOS enough? That's weird. I thought that was a pretty common conception. Like I said, ESPN had a chart up that was mind boggling. I would blitz on every down if it panned out over the entire season the way it did in Nashville.
Nope, just observations. That's the thing though... our offense will sputter at some point... and if it sputters against P. Manning in the playoffs then we are going to be in trouble if we don't find a better pass rush from now to then. All I'm saying is that if our pass rush does not improve, then I don't think we will have a shot at the SB. I truly hope that either: A: I'm wrong and our pass rush is just fine where it is B: It improves and we become a complete team that can do everything well
I don't think the Jets are missing anything at this point, although I still have a lot of questions about the toughness of the coaching staff. This team is closer to a real Super Bowl run than any Jets team since 1998. There's actually more talent here this year than in '98, but the coaching is nowhere near as good. Parcells, Belichik and Weis were the gold standard back then. Mike Westhoff is the only current Jets coach that could have held his head high in that crowd.
I think that reaching the SB means having to deal with at least one playoff game where one component of the team is having a bad day. I think that if our D struggles we have an O that can keep up with anyone... but if our O struggles I'm not so sure that today we have a D that can shut down everyone.
This week should test the passing defense. We will have a good measure of where we stand. I look forward to the game.
Yeah, but the stat was comparing rushing 4 and rushing 5 or more. I know theoretically we are supposed to have guys with fluid hips, quickness, and speed to man up on the TE or zone the flats/middle. I just think that 2 LBers on this D should be coming after it on most occasions. That puts it even between O-Line and D-Line, and how long can 5 guys hold up against a gang of guys trying to get past them? Besides, teams get all their yards in the second half. I just think for some reason Sutton pushes the pussy button. Maybe overthinking halftime adjustments?
This is true... I can't imagine the Denver run game giving us much trouble, so it's going to be a lot of Cutler. I think Revis can shut down Marshall, but I assume that Revis will play the #2 WR and Law + Rhodes will take Marshall out of the game. Once again that leaves their TE against our slow middle... and we'll see how that is exploited. Our pass rush will most definetely have to step it up this week.
Yeah you'd think after the Cards or Pats game that we wouldn't fall into this ... I don't want to say Prevent, but more laid back D... We need to find a way to cover a TE. We have a good scheme for the WRs, but those freaking TEs always end up gutting us. So far the TEs we've faced have not been super good, so their impact is limited... but someone like Gates could do some serious damage. The more I talk about this the more brilliant the Ty Law signing becomes. It affords us a level of flexibility that helps us disguise our LBers lack of coverage skills. Without Law in the mix I think we'd be in deep sh1t.
If the offense really struggles then the defense probably will break down because Jenkins can't go 35-40 minutes at his size. One of the reasons the Jets dominated so heavily yesterday was that Haynesworth broke down under the amount of time he was needed on the field. Two injury timeouts due to him and the Jet's running game got stronger as the game wore on and they were able to stay on the field.
I thought the Pats really showed a good Blu-print against us in the 2nd half, where they would attack man coverage by exposing the middle and letting Cassle take off with it or running a package that forced us to keep Jenkins on the sidelines. If we play the Pats again in the Playoffs they will do the same thing to us that they did to the Vikes last year. They will probably just pass 95% of the time... granted they don't have T. Brady, but Cassel is getting a lot of confidence with these 400 yard games so he's going to start becoming more and more of a factor.
The Jets are 3rd in the NFL in sacks ahead of the NY Giants by 3 sacks! I guess you could say the Jets don't have a dominant pass rusher and they rely more on blitzes to get their sacks but a sack is a sack. I think we get burned in the secondary because we blitz safeties and corners a lot but you can't argue too much when you are ahead of just about every team in sacks and only 4 sacks behind #1(philly).
